I'll definitely take Snow for white--I mean who who could think of Snow without White ;-) (or you could use it for "suggests color).

C. (Comment, never msg). (riedel) See my post; you'll find "suggests colour" is taken. :) I only need yellow. I'll walk across to my library now. White crosses off immediately!

I'm reeling that I questioned the fate of a 2014 Scottish theme, enough to ponder hosting... and one was there! Dear me, I'm scurrying to finish challenges. New ones hadn't crossed my mind, being no where near January. Off posting I go again. * Update: a rare Phyllis A. Whitney fits the hue's bill. :) http://cmriedel.wordpress.com/2013/11...

C. (Comment, never msg). (riedel) Thank you both for saying which you use. I wondered why answers were about "ease". Ah, because I said 'basic'. I meant do these do what we need without upgrading to a premium account. Are functional linkies generally free memberships? To use monthly ect?

The free membership does everything I need it to do. I haven't seen any reason to upgrade to a premium account.

C. (Comment, never msg). (riedel) Thank you! Been waiting on this answer from either you or Peggy. If free is what you have been using, I'm convinced. I recall you having a few types, including book cover thumbnails, so it sounds like a lot is available to free users.

I used the book cover once (by mistake)--I think you are allowed one freebie on that. If you're really set on using book covers, then you might have to up-grade.

C. (Comment, never msg). (riedel) Just listing examples. I'm not paying. As a participant, I really like the ease of the "Blenza" format. It doesn't display entries on the page but you see them after clicking. They retain your blog name and last author, making it so easy to do a few tweaks. I'll look into using that.

message 58: by Susan (new)

Susan | 11 comments Well I have about 1000s of ebooks between the kindle and nook (or epub format in general). Just added up what I had on my file lists (the only way I know where they are on my computer to add to my ipad). I am going for Pike's Peak and work my way up. 12 books-one a month- you would think could be handled. Doesn't slim the TBR too much but I think I will be able to climb better if I start small.

So a little bit about myself. I'm from South Carolina getting ready to turn 40 this year (ye-haw). No kids but my sister is currently pregnant with fraternal twins boy and a girl. She already has a daughter Addison who's 2, whom I love dearly. Married 13 years this month and our baby is Tiger who is a tuxedo cat-his name is a story in itself. I got an ipad 2 years ago which my husband thought I would enjoy-I do! I still have a kindle and color nook, you never know the power could go out and I would have at least 3 reading devices charged! I am trying to use goodreads more at keeping up with my books as well as what I read.

Hope to make many new friends here.

C. (Comment, never msg). (riedel) It's real books for me. I like some things independent of software. Making friends, sharing story journeys together; sure thing! I'm with my (non-married) spouse 13 years and equally consider my cats (all 7) my children. Just turned 40 myself: yee-haw indeed.
Carolyn in Manitoba (that's north of North Dakota).

{Okay, in 5 days it becomes 41. But I don't change it, until the calendar changes it}!

Age is a state of mind and in my mind I'm still 18!

C. (Comment, never msg). (riedel) Hoping you enjoy everything else I wrote as well. :) A few nice things in common.

Susan | 11 comments Oh I did!

C. (Comment, never msg). (riedel) Feel free to elaborate! LOL! I think having a blue day is why I'm testy. Too many have declined the gathering I've already pushed up a week. Pair that with one of my pet peeves: 'writing a huge personal chunk, then people only reply to one part' and you see why I'm being a wench today. ;) Thanks for giving me a smile.

message 64: by Rachel W (new)

Rachel W (razzle97) Hello all! I'm Rachel and I am looking forward to participating in this challenge with you next year, this is my first time. Heavy library use and a tendency to buy books in groups of 4-6 (when I only have time to read 1) has left me with quite a pile to read. I read a little bit of everything, but like literary fiction, science fiction and horror the most. I read on a kindle and paper books, but I have been collecting paper books for a long time, so that group is much larger. The number of books in my mountain range is unknown, but I'm planning to start small with 12 books and see how many mountains I can climb in 2014! Looking forward to chatting with you all :)

C. (Comment, never msg). (riedel) You will be a pleasure to chat with as well. Paper books here all the way; in my humble, snowy, Manitoba home. Please call me Carolyn.

Sophia (sophiarose) Hi everyone!

I'm back again because I still have a towering TBR pile. I'm an avid reader, I'm a reviewer and apparently I can't say no to a good book. ;) Other interests are gardening, traveling, walking, visiting with friends and going on 'adventures' with my hubby.

My TBR pile is several hundred in size and ranges through several genres though romance, mystery and history are the big ones.

I'm tackling Mt. Toro for now. Good luck everyone!

Mary (marythebooknerd) When I saw this group I knew I had to join. My name is Mary and I am a bookaholic. I only have about 150 that I own to read counting both physical and e-books. But, I keep adding new books and just can't stop myself. It will be great to have a support group to remind me that I should read what I have first!! :)

C. (Comment, never msg). (riedel) Welcome Mary. I saw your profile, very sweet intro. I must say it's cats, who I find great reading companions; or anything companions. My two neighbour's dogs infringe vocally on my space. hehehehe I'm Carolyn in central Canada.

Kathleen (towers_kt) | 35 comments Hi everyone,

I'm Kathleen, also an avid reader. Thrilled to have been directed to this group!

Moving as frequently as I have over the past few years, it's become all too clear that I own entirely too many books that still need reading! Hopefully setting some reading goals for the new year will help me start to cut into that ever-growing mountain (grin!).

Welcome to Mount TBR! Good luck with getting that TBR pile down to size.

message 74: by Laurel (new)

Laurel Hi all, I'm Laurel. I really need to focus on getting my owned real and kindle books read next year (or at least making a dent in the pile) as I am so easily distracted into buying more or getting stuff from the library!
Good luck to everyone making the ascent of Mount TBR and will see you on the way up!

Katherine (Kat) Nagel (katnagel) | 10 comments Bev wrote: "Sorry about the GR thing....I'm just incredibly reluctant to move to another book/reading platform. GR is my third. I hate change and really don't want to shift things again....I may have to at some point....."

I'm not the biggest fan of Amazon, but I've only noticed one bad thing since they bought GR: the unannounced removal of a review that personally attacked an author (rather than addressing the quality of the book itself). Some truly vicious comments associated with that review were also deleted without notice. I saw that review and the comments before GR removed them. They were vile personal attacks. I would have removed them from my own site, and probably banned the people who posted them.

I only have one criticism about the way the situation was handled: I would have notified the person who posted the review that it violated the Terms of Service, and given them a chance to revise what they wrote.

Some people call that censorship. I call it responsible management of a publicly-accessible forum.

If there are other problems with the way Amazon is running GR---and there very well may be---I'd be interested in learning the details. I've requested this in several of the GR discussions I participate in, and no-one has been able (or willing) to give specific examples. I'm reluctant to condemn any organization based on vague rumors.

C. (Comment, never msg). (riedel) Same here. I've heard negativity about the merchandise shop, as well as their new ownership of this site. When I asked what it was about, there was no answer and in fact, a 'friend list' member deleted out of my profile. I have no hard feelings if their concerns are that great.

I don't defend any unfair organizations and don't imagine I'd want to work for a huge impersonal warehouse. But I live rurally and enjoy buying from there. I love Goodreads, from the instant I joined; including discussions with wonderful people.

Katherine (Kat) Nagel (katnagel) | 10 comments C. wrote: " I love Goodreads, from the instant I joined; including discussions with wonderful people. "

Agreed. I still use LibraryThing as a catalog of the books I own, but Goodreads is much easier to use for multiple Want-to-read lists. And---much as I dislike using most forums---the GR discussions are great.

message 79: by Abbey (new)

Abbey (abbess) | 4 comments Hello Bev - many thanks for inviting me!

Hello everyone,, I;m Abbey in Boston and, um, I don't DARE count up all my unread books! See, when I moved from a much larger apt 8 years ago, I *did* sell a bunch of my TBR books, and gave a lot away, but still wound up with ~40 big boxes of books that would not fit into my current bookcases. I do have a goodly amount of closet space but every single one is stuffed full of the books!! (grin)

Even considering only the books ON my shelves, I'd likely have more than enough to go for Olympus but I tend to always bite off more than I can chew, KWIM? So I'd like to begin at least with Mt Ararat since symmetry appeals to me, and that challenge would equal approximate one book each week. I Think I can manage at least that.

Don't think Ill be able to list in advance though - that's usually a kiss of death to my interest levels (yeah, yeah, I know that's childish, but my emotional age is somewhere's around 7, sooooo....!) but I certainly have enough variety to choose from.

message 80: by Katherine (Kat) (new)

Katherine (Kat) Nagel (katnagel) | 10 comments I sympathize, Abbey! When we moved here 20 years ago, we sold or donated over half of our books. Did another serious downsizing throughout the last year which reduced our collection by another 800+ books. We're still left with 150 linear feet of bookshelves x an average of 12 books per foot = approximately 1800 books on shelves + a floor-to-ceiling, wall-to-wall jumble of boxes stuffed into one of the attic rooms. My puny 36-book Mt. Vancouver list for 2014 won't make much of a dent in that, but it's a start.

message 83: by Denise (new)

Denise (drbetteridge) Hello! My story sounds much like everyone else's. Moved countries, twice, had to leave behind all but a few books that I treasure as much as my kids. And of course, addicted to accumulating books- both real and digital. I know my puny goal challenge of twelve books for the year won't make a dent in even the relatively small number of physical books I have, but I overdid the goal setting thing this year, and haven't enjoyed myself as much. Like some have said, "it's a start." Best of luck to all of us!

Thank you so much for admitting that. I have so much anxiety about my tbr pile, and you just made me feel a little better. I hope we can both make a sizable dent in our piles in 2014! I wish we could drink to that...I feel like this group could use an alcoholic beverage or two. ;)

message 91: by Leslie (new)

Leslie Hi, my name is Leslie. One of my goals in 2014 is to read more of the books on my shelves and on my Kindle rather than the piles of library books I have been reading this year. My TBR here on GoodReads hovers pretty steadily at 200 books or so but it doesn't include many books I got when my folks downsized or the Kindle freebies I keep downloading... In addition, I started working on reading the Guardian's list of 1000 novels everyone should read about 15 months ago (only about 24% done so far, so there are a lot of books TBR from that as well!!).

I will make a firm commitment to read at least 24 paperbacks off my shelves in 2014 & hope that I will also read as many off my Kindle & 10 audiobooks.

I'm going to sign up to the Mt Vancouver level...that will at least take down the piles to a non-dangerous level.
