The books were read in the 90s so I am thinking they were likely published around that time as well. The main character was a young man who was a foundling and didn't fit in well with the village. He had black eyes and blue sclera. I remember that at some point he eventually ends up with a set of armor that can stand up to dragons. I think the dragons were crystal or jewel types but I could be mixing that up with something else. There are dragons and drakes that are capable of shifting shape to appear human. That is all I can recall about the series.

OK, apparently I should have searched Amazon instead of just Google when trying to find this book. I ended up find it and it is the Dragonlord of Mystara with its two sequels by Thorarinn Gunnarsson.
