Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling - Reading 'Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix (Harry Potter #5)' from April 17th 2019
I'll be honest. I have been not wanting to read this series because i think it's for kids but I do have it and my 13 yo boy refuses to read it so somebody has to do it. I hope I get into it instead of being apprehensive.
Starting now. The boy who lived..

I put it off for the longest time just because it's so popular. I try to stay off of bandwagons but a couple weeks ago I gave up on that and read Hunger Games. Now I'm reading Harry Potter and starting Twilight. I'm glad I did. So far I've loved Hunger Games and I really loved Sorcerer's Stone. I can see why people would be apprehensive, but as an adult, I loved it.

I am sooooo jealous. What I wouldn't give to be a Harry Potter virgin... (TJ says in a dreamy tone, and sighs). To read the books for the first time... To have all the books available and not have to wait a year or two for the next installment...
I read the all the books as an adult and it never crossed my mind that they could be children's books. Even now that I have a child -- I just can't see it. And you two are just starting off -- the books get deliciously more complex each year, with parallel threads running through them that barely touch, but all culminate into mind-blowing climaxes... Ohhh, to be a HP-virgin again. I've read them all so many times, but it's been years. Maybe I'll join you. :D

I've seen movies 1-4, so I know somewhat what is going to happen. But reading and watching are so different. I get more emotion out of the book than the movie and I like imagining things myself.

The first 2 films, directed by Christopher Columbus, were made for kids and don't have at all the suspense or the excitement I felt when reading those books.
The third film, directed by Alfonso Cuaron, brings across the mood and feel of the books much better, but... Cuaron uses too much liberty in developing the story, changing it so much that the main message in the book is lost.

The fourth film, directed by Mike Newell, was a catastrophe. The Goblet of Fire was my favorite of the HP books, and one of my favorite books of all times. It was so complex, so exciting, so suspenseful, and its climax blew me out of the water. Unfortunately, the director tried to squeeze all that complexity into one 2-hour film, and what we got was a superficial scrape of all the stories that were running parallelly throughout the book. Ugg. If I hadn't read the book, there would have been no way to follow such complexity.
Then came the final four films, directed by David Yates. These are by far the best, so you've got something to look forward to, Ashley. But I advise you to read the books first. Don't spoil the surprises by watching the films. Yates picked out a few of the main themes from each book, and left most of the content out. This makes for much more exciting, fast paced movies. The films capture the mood and feel of the books well, as the content gets darker and darker. But because so much is left out, we certainly don't get the whole Harry Potter experience.
So enjoy the books! :D

I know! And the books just keep getting better and better... you have a fun ride ahead of you!

(view spoiler)[ Quidditch sounds so awesome. And I love all the little details that she put in there, like about the longest match ever was 3 months. (hide spoiler)]
