It was! Oh and some are now using 3D modeling to map their sites as they excavate, so you can see all the layers in 3D :)

There is a forest in Mozambique that was discovered through google earth. Our herpetologists got to join the first few trips there and described a few new species (frog, chameleon and viper). The butterfly people who went also found new species if I remember correctly.

Most of the archaeological sites found these days are with Google Earth too. It is such a handy tool :)

Have you guys played with it a bit?
