Wrong Ways Down by Stacia Kane
Shelf 5: Witches
Date finished: 11/21/13
Rating: ★★★★☆
Thoughts:

Downside Ghosts wasn't a series I thought I'd fall in love with, but with friends' encouragement, I continued and it's moved into my top ten. But, the wait for a new book...it's been a long time. Then this gem came out. It's a shorter novel (but more than 200 pages!), and it's written from Terrible's point of view.

It's just fascinating to be in his head and hear what he's thinking about life, Bump, his work, and especially Chess.

This is #1.5, but I think if you aren't caught up on the series, you shouldn't read it yet. (If you're not caught up, don't read this either, (view spoiler))

Book: The Spirit of Christmas by Liz Talley
Finished: Nov 23
Rating: 3.5 Stars
Review:
Mary Page is just a regular girl with a big heart who just happened to stop at the right place and the right time. Needing to pick up a gift for to take to her Uncle Christmas party stopping into a convenience store on the way she notices an homeless man, who is rude to her when but she still goes out of her way to give him coffee and on noticing his bare feet she offers him the socks she had bought for the party and offers to take him to a shelter for a hot meal and warm bed. This act of kindness changes her life.

Brennan Henry is does not like Christmas, it brings back to many painful memories. He is hard working and all he can think about the bottom line and preparing to run his Grandfathers company one day.

Malcolm Henry Jr is a new man after he suffered a heart attack. All his life it was only about work, success and making money. But none of that did him any good when he spent days alone in the hospital. Days that gave him time to think about the important things in life and how what he thought was were really not at all. So he comes up with an idea, that will help both his company, the community, and hopefully his grandson Brennan. Love and kindness towards others, helping those who have less then you. Finding the really meaning of Christmas, the spirit of Christmas. And to him Mary Page is that.

Sweet Christmas, about how love and kindness can change your life for the better. Very enjoyable and heartwarming, with little bit of spice and humor.

Steph (angel4492) | 32760 comments Priceless (Rylee Adamson, #1) by Shannon Mayer
Series: Rylee Adamson #1
Shelf: vampires
Read: 24 Nov
Rating: 3 stars

Review:
Priceless tells the story of Rylee Adamson who was accused of killing her sister. Since then, her adoptive parents have forced her out of their lives and she's got a permanent FBI tail. She uses her powers as a Tracker to find missing children. No matter where a child was taken, no matter how far or how hidden, [she] could find them.

I thoroughly enjoyed the world that Mayer created. Her shifters are very unique; only Alphas have the ability to completely switch between their human and/or wolf forms. Others, like her "pet" Alex, are unable to switch between forms leaving them similar to children mentally with a dog's loyalty. There are vampires, ogres, harpies, and trolls as well. All of which are interesting.

I also enjoyed the interplay between Rylee and O'Shea, the FBI agent who, convinced she had something to do with her sister's disappearance, has been following her for the past ten years. However, I felt the story would have been even better if Mayer had not used Rylee's "mostly" Immune ability in the way she did.

(view spoiler)

Books #1-4 in the series are Amazon Prime freebies, so I may continue on to see how things progress.

Steph (angel4492) | 32760 comments Soul Ties (Soul Ties, #1) by Lisa Swallow
Series: Soul Ties #1
Shelf: demons
Read: 25 Nov
Rating: 3.5 stars

Review:
Two years ago, feeling her life as one of the Fated "... meant a half existence, always at the whim of the Caelestia", Ava chose to take on the duties of a soul-hunter. She quickly learns this is no better. Now, however, she knows failure may lead to her death.
The two races [Demon Lords and Nephilim] united against the Caelestia, who's spurned the exiled angels and were at war with the Demon Lords.

The Demon Lords needed a bigger army, and began capturing human souls to create demonic foot soldiers for the war against the Caelestia. The Nephilim's task became taking human souls. Souls they put into demons, allowing the Demon Lords to control them and send them war.
Ava's job was to "... find the demons and take back the stolen human souls, return them to the Caelestia, where lost souls belonged." Yet, when she sees her target is a Nephilim she doesn't feel she'll be capable of retrieving his soul. Not only that, but she hates spending time with humans and has no access to her powers. However, her boss promises that this will be her last job as a soul-hunter.

Anxious to complete her job, she quickly searches the college campus for Keir. To her surprise, he's nothing like she expected. He's not arrogant. Instead he's quiet and keeps to himself when he's not with his human best friend. This friend is something else Ava cannot understand. Why does he seem to ignore her and shower all of his attention on a human?

I read this Amazon freebie in one sitting. I liked the world Lisa Swallow created. Her characters are somewhat similar to several other demon/angel/Nephilim series I've read. However, her characters are likable and their story quickly drew me in. The only downfall for me were Ava's personality shifts throughout the story. I will most likely continue on with the series and look for book #2, Torn Souls, which came out earlier this month.

Carrie (icanhasbooks) | 716 comments Book: Lights, Camera...Monsters (Monsters in Hollywood, #1) by Lila Dubois
Shelf: demons
Read: Nov 26
Rating: 2 Stars
Review: Lena is a Hollywood producer her friends run a movie production company, who at the present time are not taking on any new clients. No matter how sexy Luke and his brothers are.

Lena invites Luke out to dinner to find out what their story is, why is that they want Lena's company to tell it.

Luke and his brothers are monsters taking the form of humans. Everything they know about humans they have seen on tv. Their kind are in danger of being exposed. Always hiding from cameras. Until these three decided it was time to change humans views on monsters. So they decided to go to Hollywood to get there story told.

Not the best book in the world but I've read worse. It was written well even if it didn't really tickle my fancy. But people I've noticed have liked it. I don't think I'll be continuing this series but that's okay with me.

Shelf: Vampires
Read: Nov 27
Rating: 5 Stars

Pearl wasn’t made a vampire instead she was born with the plans of being nothing special pure. Yet Pearl is anything but boring she’s special she just need to be stabbed by a unicorn to show her the way. When a routine trip to the Dairy Hut ends in Pearl being attacked by a unicorn her family laughs it off thinking she was attacked by a hunter. It’s when she returns to the Dairy Hut for her favorite meal that she’s kidnapped by two hunters locked in a cage and doomed to wait for sunrise. However when the sun rises she doesn’t burn into fire turning her into a potential hazard to her family.

With the upcoming king’s feast her parents see her new found ability to walk in the sun as the perfect way to befriend high school students for party. As Pearl becomes friends with the students at school she starts to develop a conscience and hunting for her family become harder after she sends her parents to a mean girls house. After Pearl is pushed into drinking from her Dairy Hut guy ends in disaster she flees from her family but uses the idea of the junior prom to gain forgiveness. Only it’s short lived when she learns they plan to have a bloodbath and burn the mansion killing all the juniors instead of just taking a pint. Will she be able to save the students before it’s too late? What’s the story about the unicorns she keeps seeing?

I love Pearl she’s a goth teen vampire with a preference for ice cream flavored blood. You can’t help connecting with Pearl as she’s the awkward new girl at school she’s a good girl trapped in a dark world. I didn’t like her boyfriend from the start he’s kind of a tool than again he’s a vampire. I love Bethany she’s totally nerdy when Pearl first encounters her in the library. Evan I also think is a great character he’s an honest nice guy who happens to have a secret.

I’ve had Drink, Slay, Love on my bookshelf for months I just haven’t gotten a chance to pull it off the shelf. The idea of vampires and unicorns has my curiosity peeked right from the start what can I say I love the sparkly unicorns over vampires. The characters are fantastic they are engaging, easy to connect with and I couldn’t get enough of them. The book is unlike many vampire books on the market, extremely unique that will keep you on the edge of your seat. The author has put her own unique spin on the vampire concept by mixing unicorns as well as humor to tell a brilliant story. Drink, Slay, Love is one of those books that’s hard to put down you just have to know how it will end. This is my first book by Sarah Beth Durst but I think she did an amazing job and I can’t wait to read her other books. I know for a fact I’ll be reading and suggesting this one over and over.

Judithe | 6566 comments World After (Penryn & the End of Days, #2) by Susan Ee
World After by Susan Ee
Shelf 7: Demons
Date finished: 11/26/13
Rating: ★★★★ 1/2
Thoughts:

Wow. Just...wow. I was so engrossed in it, that it caught me by surprise when it ended! LOL! That does not mean it had a mediocre ending...it just moved into a whirlwind the closer it got, and on the e-reader, I didn't realize I'd already, sadly, reached that point!

I'm at a loss as to how to review this without massive spoilers! Hence the review delay.

Susan Ee's world is gritty and horrifying, even under the things that appear beautiful at first sight. But, there is beauty in the people, even though it might not show at first. This was a very "visual" story for me...Ms. Ee painted vivid pictures with her descriptions of people and places. And the characters. Ah, it was a treat.

Penryn's motivations for action mainly come from her loyalty to her family, her mother & sister, Paige, as well as her sense of right, and attraction to Raffe. Their relationship has a "moth and flame" aspect to it, but really not sure if Penryn is the moth & Raffe the flame, or vice versa. They may be both for each other. Anyway, for her sister particularly, Penryn will never stop and never give up. Even through the craziest situations, she keeps going for Paige. It leads her and us on a maze of discovering more and more tidbits of why the world has gone crazy.

I'm definitely getting the next in this series, and eagerly scouting for news on when it will come out!

Judithe | 6566 comments The Watcher (Anna Strong Chronicles, #3) by Jeanne C. Stein
The Watcher by Jeanne C. Stein
Shelf 8: Vampires
Date finished: 11/30/13
Rating: ★★★★☆
Thoughts:

I'm catching up on this series slowly, but do enjoy each story. This one was a slow start for me, but much of the blame for that lies on being swamped by RL.

Bounty Hunter Anna Strong is still adjusting to her fairly new vampire status after an "unfortunate" incident during a capture. She's also added "Watcher" to her job description, but is not so sure of how well that fits in with her lifestyle. She's trying to balance the human and supernatural worlds, without one knowing about the other, and that leads to quite a lot of tangles.

Max, her sort-of-boyfriend, is in the middle of one of those tangles. Trying to sort out what's up with him, as well as a nasty witch who's causing problems with Anna's friend Culebra keeps her busy and on her toes.

It's a race to figure out how everything is connected, and how to keep the people she cares about alive.

This was a very entertaining read, especially the later half (had time to sit and read! No grabbing a couple of pages between classes!). Will be continuing this series!

Book: Every Other Day Every Other Day by Jennifer Lynn Barnes
Date finished: 11/30/13
Rating: ★★★★
Review:

Kali isn't’t always human every other day she transform into a demon hunter that makes her strong and powerful. No one knows she’s different not even her father. When her father’s co-workers daughter shows up with a Chupacabra bite she does the only thing she can think to do and use her blood to call the bite into body. Assuming when she transforms the next day her blood will kill the Chupacabra healing her as good as new. The bite has a few side effects a voice in her head only she can hear and the craving for blood. All she has to do is make it through the day before she transforms and heals.

When the girls encounter a dragon that shouldn't be there to start with it also eats people as well as breath’s fire which is also not possible. Kali should know her day is going to be anything but easy. Kali learns that they injected girls with the Chupacabra in hopes of finding a viable specimen she just happens to be the one who has it. As if having to worry about making is through the day isn’t enough, she’s being hunted by the ones who gave Bethany the bite. When the chase ends in a crash they assume that Kali is dead having broken her neck they leave her on the road.

When she wakes up the craving to hunt is strong as is her craving for blood. While the bite doesn’t heal completely, it doesn’t kill her either. She quickly hunts down a basilisk and can’t fight the strong urge to drink its blood. The voice in her head’s name is Zev she learns that he’s like her but being held captive by Chimera Biomedical. She has only 24 hours to save Bethany and Zev before she’s human again as well as stop Chimera Biomedical?

I like Kali she’s got dealing with a lot being torn between two worlds not fitting into either. She’s my favorite kind of character “the flawed kick ass heroine” there is just something about them. I really connected with Kali she’s smart and strong and selfless risking her own life for that of someone she doesn’t know. The girls at school Bethany and Skyler are unique and enhance the story. I wasn’t sure about Zev but as the book progressed I found myself liking him too.

I’m not a huge demon fan so this week’s bingo had me a little nervous. I've had Every Other Day but since it’s a demon book it’s been on the back burner. The idea of Kali I found very interesting a girl who walks in two worlds human one day another demon slayer. The author has created engaging characters that you can’t help cheering on through the story. I found the whole story captivating from start to finish it’s an action packed story. The way the author mixes the human world with the monster world is unique and exciting. She’s filled the story with demons, dragons, crazy scientists, stranger silver eyed guys, cheerleaders, and tops it all off with zombies. Every Other Day was hard for me to put down it kept me on the edge of my seat till the very end. I know this is a standalone but I’d be curious to read more about Kali because I enjoyed her story.

Review:

Wow! Just wow! I read the novella Leashing the Tempest (Arcadia Bell, #2.5) by Jenn Bennett before starting this third book in the Arcadia Bell series. Which was a good thing because there were references to it. As for Binding, it starts out with a bang as Cady and Lon are investigating Merrimoth's new found super powers. Anytime that Cady is involved, thing don't end quite as planned. It becomes personal when other Earthbounds' knacks are becoming amplified and Cady's bar it robbed. Kar Yee is injured in the attack and Cady makes it a priority to track down the cause. Cady and Lon have one of the best relationships I have read in UF. It is mature, loving and a delight to read. Jupe is his usual cocky teenage self. Love him! The arrival of Jupe's grandmother and aunt create a whole new set of worries for Cady. Not only is she dealing with this amped up knack enhancer and the disapproving in-laws, she has also started pulling some serious power of her own with her Moon magic.

The ending of this book was such a cliffhanger that I went back and read it again.(The whole book, not just the end!) This is a definite shelf keeper and I am sure I will read it again before the release of book 4 in the Spring. I simply cannot say enough good things about this series. I recommend it highly!!

Review:

This has been on my shelf forever! I have had many friends tell me that I needed to read it and it would be my favorite series of all time. I'm not sure I would go that far.

This is the introduction to the Black Dagger Brotherhood, a group of warriors tasked with protecting their species. Wrath is a member of the First Family and should be ruling as king. Beth is the half human daughter of Darius and is unaware of her lineage. Darius asked Wrath to care for Beth during her transition. Something he is unwilling to do until Darius is murdered.

The storyline is good with the danger of the lesser trying to destroy the Brotherhood. The character descriptions are so vivid I can see each of them in my mind. I enjoyed it enough to continue reading the series and see if it becomes a favorite. For now, there are so many books and so little time....
