What Else Are You Reading - November 2013
Just finished Ancillary Justice. Decided I'm going to hold off on Three Parts Dead for just a bit and read the Asimov classic The Caves of Steel. With the new human/robot buddy-cop TV show Almost Human set to premiere this weekend, I thought I'd go back and read the very first story (AFAIK) in this subgenre.
Clare wrote: "Reading through Trading in Danger by Elizabeth Moon, very engaging so far and I like that the female lead is just out for glory (something female character rarely do) but I am concerned that it's leading up to a climax where Eco-terrorists are defeated with Chekhov's fruitcakes."Not to worry, Clare. That is sooo not where the story is going. It is a great series, especially if you like tough and resourceful female protagonists.
Graphicaudio has a full cast recording with music and effects of Elizabeth Moon's Vatta series, by the way.You can listen to an hour of it on this page (4th from the bottom): http://www.graphicaudio.net/extended-...

Thanks. I'll give it a listen.

I do think the other characters were left a little flat, not that any of them were bad just all sort of one note.
And the ending with the fruit cake did end up to be pretty fantastic, although I still say she should have tried to use it as a weapon somehow.
Finished both Unwritten and Xenocide and started Children of the Mind. Not sure when I'll finish that, it's been a slow reading month with nanowrimo.
Hooked on listening to the Kate Daniels series and now on Magic Slays. Still chugging thru Ancillary Justice

I'm still trying to get myself to read Ancillary Justice but I cant seem to get into it, so might just have to lem it and start reading Hyperion or The Dragonbone Chair.
Waiting for my hold on Ancillary Justice to come through (expect it to arrive at my local library this afternoon or tomorrow), but in the mean time I finally decided to go back and reread Ender's Game. I remember reading it many years ago and very much enjoying it, but to be honest, all but the broadest strokes of the plot have been lost to me. With all the hype about the movie I figured this was as good a time to revisit it as any.
Trying to catch up David Weber's Safehold series before the next book come out in 2104. On How Firm a Foundation at the moment and one more to go.Also reading The Wee Free Men, which I am only finding mildly amusing at the moment.
I gave steelheart a try but after 5 chapters I just can't get into the book. But luckly I picked up a copy of the latest discworld book Raising Steam today so now I have something good to read.
Just started The Way of Kings. This is my first Sanderson book and it comes highly recommended. It's off to a shaky start as far as engaging me. Each section so far has jumped to new characters so I am trying come to grips with just what kind of story he's telling.
Lots of worldbuilding, but thankfully little exposition.
Some real tonguetwister names: "Tvlakv" seriously?

The jumping mostly settles down with 4 main POVs although the interludes will jump to a lot of one-offs.

I'm reading The Claw of the Conciliator. This is a bit of an odd series, but I'm enjoying it so far.
About to start The Ego Machine by Henry Kuttner. I've always heard he was one of the greats of the pulps but have yet to read any of his works.
I quit reading Robin Hood by Dumas. Very disappointing. Not sure if it was a bad translation or just a poor work. I had such high hope for a good read. I've read plenty of Dumas and enjoyed it all. The Robin Hood stories stories seem like something right up his alley. Plenty of good books to move on to, the to-read pile has plenty.

Deciding at the moment if I should read Great North Road by Peter F. Hamilton or The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova.
Not familiar with the Hamilton novel, Clare, but have read The Historian. Kind of a cross between Dracula and The Da Vinci Code, if that helps any. :)
Walter wrote: "Not familiar with the Hamilton novel, Clare, but have read The Historian. Kind of a cross between Dracula and The Da Vinci Code, if that helps any. :)"Thanks Walter, I think I'll give The Historian a go first. Cause... that just sounds like a really interesting mix!

Aye she does!! One could make the analogy of a Harry Dresden. Same type of style/humour. Guess that's why I like it so much. :)
Clare wrote: "Deciding at the moment if I should read Great North Road by Peter F. Hamilton or The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova."I vote for Great North Road. Maybe you can finish before Tom Merritt.
Clare wrote: "Deciding at the moment if I should read Great North Road by Peter F. Hamilton or The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova."I did NOT like The Historian (my review if it helps) so I would go for Hamilton :)
Just finished American Gods by Neil Gaiman before diving into Ancillary Justice. Some intriguing ideas about being dead (like it's not final) and the fate of gods in modern times. But a bit slow in places.

I'm reading that book also! I started several books this month, which were recommended to me, but gave up on all of them.. but when I strated reading The Way of Kings i got really hooked. There are a lot of characters, and I was a bit lost in the beginning, but I found them really interesting,so I just want to keep reading to find more about them.
About the names.. hah, yes, some are really tricky.. but I just pronounce v like u, so it makes my life easier.. Although I would really want to know how the author pronunces them.
Finished my reread of Reaper's GaleMy review https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Continuing on to the next book in the Malazan series
Toll the Hounds
Finished The Well At The World's End: Volume II and decided to continue with more vintage tales: Golden Cities, Far, edited by Lin Carter.

Jenny wrote: "Halfway through The Golem and the Jinni."Other Jenny here. I loved The Golem and the Jinni! It's one of the best books I've read this year. I hope you continue to enjoy it.

Love Kate Daniels. She surely kicks ass, but it's the unique setting that keeps me coming back.
Besides Ann Leckie's excellent first novel and my regular rotation of podcasts, I've started listening to Steven Erikson's Gardens of the Moon on Audible. I started Erikson's The Crippled God a few months ago, and almost immediately realized I needed to refamiliarize myself with the series before reading its last volume. But the thought of actually reading those hundreds of thousands of words again was just overwhelming, so I decided to re-consume it via audio.
Finished the Audible version of Changes (The Dresden Files #12)My review https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Starting Hobbs Rain Wild Chronicles with The Dragon Keeper also on Audible

It is! I hope too finish tonight.

Hi Other Jenny!
So many Jennys!I finished Children of the Mind faster then I thought. So, I decided to go back to Robin Hobb and started Royal Assassin. I also just picked up the new Walking Dead trade paper back, so I'm going to give that a quick read as well.
Just finished Midnight Riot which was a pretty good UF. A probationary constable working for the London Metropolitan Police ends up a wizard in training. Throw in a little dry humor and you have Dresden, Potter and Hot Fuzz.

You're right, Jenny. The Scott Snyder Batman is really fantastic. If you haven't read Batman: The Black Mirror, I highly recommend that one also. Pretty dark but very good.
