I like the color pink too! We can start a subgroup but would probably end up discussing the Princess Diaries and Meg Cabot and Genovia. And I can wear the Tiara.
Welcome everyone!
Hahahaha I had no idea what you're talking about, Doug.
Allright, you're the designated Tiara Wearer. :)

My name is Sara and I have a weakness for the ashtray hurling and heavy drinking of the Beebo Brinker chronicles. I hurl no ashtrays myself, although I enjoy a gin and tonic once in awhile. Am an Oregon native, lived in Tokyo for 13 years, and am now plotting escape from the formica wilds of Orange County. I love queer SF: Geoff Ryman, James Tiptree Jr, and Octavia Butler are favorites, Would love any recommendations and am looking for a queer writing group.
Nice to meet you all!
Cool!
We have a number of expats in Japan.
I too adore Octavia Butler. Geoff Ryman's Was... amazing!
check out our bookshelves, we have over 600 books.

My name is Shayne. My life partner Jack and I have been together for almost thirteen years.
We do almost everything together, including reading. We have been on a romance kick lately, so reading together has helped us stay connected in more ways than one.
Welcome Shayne. We have over 600 books in our common Queereaders bookshelves. Come take a look around.

Hey English poof. That's a cute Koala bear. Have you petted one before?

Check out the group bookshelf. There's a lot of romance suggestions there. And feel free to add any you've read!

koala bears can have chlamydia? i never knew that!

Eucalyptus A Novel"
It seems a few of my friends have read it or marked it as "to read". Let us know how it is.

Are we bringing up Margo Lanagan again?
She is definitely NOT for me!
I love Kylie Minogue and I think Olivia Newton John is a goddess ... and I finally saw her live and it was heavenly. Sam, Sam, you know where I am...
The only Aussie author I've read is Colleen McCullough

Doug, you may like Australian authors Garth Nix and Isobelle Carmody. Both write fantasy for young adults. Their work is not nearly as dark as Margo Lanagan's.
I love Olivia and Kylie too.

Have you read any of his books, Jon?

My name is Malin, a Swedish bisexual (more on the gay side of life) and avid writer. I'm quite new at being in relationships - either gay or other. I'm getting more confident by time, luckily, and this spring I finished the 1st edit of my lesbian sci-fi which proved to be a good way to straighten out(figuratively speaking) my thoughts of my own sexuality.
Anyway, I'm looking forward to share thoughts, ideas, books and emotions with others who can relate to what I'm feeling.

We're a friendly group, so jump right in and share your thoughts!
There are a variety of discussion topics, including one on bisexuality. Our bookshelf has lots of great titles to browse. Feel free to add your own favorites!

Thank you! I've browsed a bit but haven't really emerged myself in any discussion yet. I feel a bit out of depth - Sarah Waters is pretty much the only author I know that writes (seriously) about the gay community, and I haven't seen many films either. But I'll try to give my humble opinion and thoughts anyway.
heyyy:) im cierra from indiana:) idk why im join.yuppers! im queer!
Hi all, I'm Bill aka Kernos, absolutely, totally, exclusively gay, though I have 2 kids and 6 grandkids (love them grandkids!). Chris and I will celebrate our 30th anniversary in May. We live in the woods in the Ozarks and I just got my Medicare card (mixed feelings about that).
I am glad I found this group, as I am always looking for new books with gay characters (m-m) and authors (all genders), especially for science fiction and fantasy and great mainstream novels, I've missed over the years.

Bill, how wonderful to be celebrating your 30th anniversary!
Check out our group's bookshelf. Lots of great titles there.
Thank you Nancy. I have already found a bunch of books to buy :yay:
I have added a few books to the SFF shelf. Is that OK? Do you want all genre fiction to be in the Fiction shelf as well the genre shelf?

I meant the fiction shelf to be just for general fiction, but people have been using it for genre titles as well.
I'd rather genre titles just go to the appropriate genre shelves.
If you feel other shelves should be added, feel free to do so.

I read to learn, to escape, to see the world, to explore many uses of language. I never go anywhere without something to read.

Please feel free to spread the word.
From now until Sunday, January 24, 2010 (or until they run out of local inventory) my publisher, Casperian Books, will donate its portion of the proceeds from any book sales made through the Casperian Website to Doctors without Borders. To add to that, I've asked Casperian to donate my royalties on any sales made of my novel Kelland during this period as well.
So check out the list and buy some books and if you've any desire to pick up a copy of Kelland, now would be the ideal time as all goes to a good cause.
Thank you all.

Just your normal computer Tech 'married' to another guy in sunny Florida type (aren't there tons of those around here? ;) Just looking for more books to read and meet some nice people on Goodreads ;) If you have any great scifi gay themed books to share...let me know. That's why I'm on here!
Oh, I just started a group for that genre (gay male scifi themed)...so join it!

Tangle has some excellent SF/F stories with a touch of romance.
China Mountain Zhang by Maureen McHugh features a half-Chinese/half-Hispanic gay male character and takes place in the near future, when China is the dominant culture of the world.
If you like romance, paranormal abilities and super powers, J.L. Snyder's The Powers of Love series is a lot of fun.

I also don't have much experience with online groups, but somewhere along the way towards getting my doctorate I started reading less social theory and more fiction...ooops! And as a lesbian and generally perversely minded person (in the sense of contrary to expectations, i mean) i have always loved reading queer or queer-minded fiction when i could find it.
I kind of ran away from home - I’m american but I’m currently living in Italy with my partner (and pet rat, but I promise not to talk about him all the time as if he were a furry child. Even if he is probably more charming and intelligent than some people I’ve met). I love living abroad but I do sometimes miss the comfort and effortlessness of communicating in the language I am actually fluent in, and most of what I read is in english, so i was excited to find this group and chat and learn from others about what’s out there, especially given that this genre seems to be expanding at an exponential rate in the past few years and I have not been keeping up with it. I also read a lot of sci fi and (when I am being good) books that actually have to do with my research, so my time is a bit divided, but I’m looking forward to getting good queer book suggestions.

How cool that you're living in Italy! I don't know many expats, other than an American woman living in Germany I used to correspond with. I'd love to run away myself at times, but learning a new language seems like too much work. Will you be returning to the States eventually, or are you planning to stay in Italy?
I like SF too, but read more fantasy. Check out the SF topic that Kelly started for more suggestions and check out our bookshelf. I've lumped the SF/fantasy titles into one shelf, thinking that if most people liked SF they also like fantasy, but I'm finding this is not necessarily true. When I have a little more time, I'll separate the titles.

I agree, I have found learning another language to be an ongoing challenge - although my partner is Italian, so talking with her helps. Except, of course, when she teaches me made-up words as if they were real...
I am happy to mix fantasy with my SF, so I'm fine with the lumping! I also appreciate fantasy, it's just that in the past few years I'm been looking for more imaginative stuff, if that makes sense - and not so gender conventional! Like Shannon, I really read to escape, so if the author's world is meticulously constructed only to repeat the same stupid things that are wrong with this one I find it disappointing. But really I'm happy to lose myself in any well-constructed and imaginative setting. with really good characters. and some kind of plot. (what, me, picky? :)

Just want to take a minute and introduce myself. My name is Katrina. I live in Florida with my girlfriend, Hannah, and my two daughters, Abigail and Kaley. I'm an avid reader of just about everything. I also write mainstream fiction, short stories, poetry, and flash fiction. It's great to meet all of you!
