What an excellent plan Jenny!

message 102: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Tempted to start some time this week too, Heather? LOL I'll try to hold out until next weekend...

message 103: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm getting the book for Christmas but I'm not seeing the family who've bought it for me until the 4th so I won't be an early starter.

I've still got December reads!

message 104: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) I'm feeling smug 'cos I finished early :)

message 105: by Shirley (last edited Dec 22, 2013 02:02PM) (new)

Shirley | 4177 comments I've just got The Hunger Games to read and then I'll start it. Glad you're joining us, Jenny!

I have the file - if someone is interested: when shall we start?

message 107: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) File?? Sorry - I don't understand.

I know you're moving house Laura, but didn't realise you had to break out of somewhere first LOL

The file for the ebook! Don't you say that in english?
I'd like to break out of my office though!!!

No, we don't call it a file, but I know what you mean - you have the ebook - excellent - I think we are starting early January, but sooner if you like!!

LauraT (laurata) | 14372 comments Mod
No no sooner! Early January is fine!

message 111: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Ah! *comprehension dawns* :D

message 112: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments OK, so the German has a question: if you don't call it ebook file what do you call it then? Just plain ebook? That seems way to shockingly simple!! ;)

Leslie | 16369 comments Jenny wrote: "OK, so the German has a question: if you don't call it ebook file what do you call it then? Just plain ebook? That seems way to shockingly simple!! ;)"

Yup -- I just call it an ebook (or in my case, a Kindle book as that is the type of ereader I use).

In German do you call ebooks "files" as we do in Italy?

message 115: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments Yes! And I've always said 'file' when speaking English too...oops. ;)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) How's everybody getting on with My Cousin Rachel ?

Did you start it Jenny? How far through are you, Shirley? I hope to start this some time this weekend.

message 118: by Shirley (new)

Shirley | 4177 comments I'm about half way through, Jean. Really enjoying it. Shall we set up a separate thread or just continue with This?

message 119: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) I don't mind at all. I suppose this could get a bit complicated if we overlap on novels, couldn't it?

You could maybe start one and then anyone who wants to chat specifically can go on there. Otherwise we could use this and use spoilers...

Yes, I think it might be easier with a separate thread, I'll set one up.

message 121: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments SOB!! No I didn't, or actually yes I did, but then realized that I had some kind of a weird abriged e-book version a third of the size of the actual book with spanish translation remarks. Anyhow. I take it as a sign I wasn't meant to squeeze it in, but to read it when I actually have the time to read it. Probably more towards the end of the year.

I would join you then Jenny - I too would like to read it when time is less pressing...

message 123: by Jenny (new)

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments Should we pencil it down and then just play it by ear?

Leslie | 16369 comments Jenny wrote: "Should we pencil it down and then just play it by ear?"

Sounds good.

message 125: by Bionic Jean (last edited Jan 04, 2014 09:56AM) (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Lol - Your version certainly sounds weird Jenny!

It might be nice if some people come to it a little later as maybe then we can do comparisons of various of her novels. I think Rebecca My Cousin Rachel and The Scapegoat have some similarites that would be good to discuss :)

Don't you make fun of my personal tragedy!!!

erm

just kidding. I think. ;)

message 127: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Sorry, Jenny!! You know me. Anything is fair game :D

And your description did make me laugh. An English novel, read as an abridged e-book by a German, said e-book being annotated for some unknown reason in Spanish... Oh come, you jest!! (It's all bubbling up inside me again anyway! LOL)

message 128: by Jenny (last edited Jan 04, 2014 11:14AM) (new)

Jenny (jeoblivion) | 4893 comments LOL. OH darn it. Yes. It is hilarious. But so tragic too!

Oh and don't ask how Laura feels, she's currently experiences the same problem (don't ask why) but is too shaken to comment.

message 129: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) ;)

message 130: by LauraT (new)

LauraT (laurata) | 14372 comments Mod
I hadn't even seen the problem, which is real!!!
I'll start it in a week or so: I wanted to finish Doris Lessing first. But I may read it at work, if things keep so slow as of late: at home I have plenty of things to do

message 133: by Bionic Jean (last edited Jan 19, 2014 02:31AM) (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Oooo Rebeccca has been voted in as the fiction monthly read for February! That's great - eases the TBR list a little and also means we have more people in!

I have just bought The Infernal World of Branwell Brontë which I've never read, but have wanted to forever (or it seems like it!)

Would anyone like to make this a readalong for later this year? If I don't plan it I've an awful feeling it might just sit there on my Kindle. Not that it would be lonely - there are dozens of companions in the "to read" list there... ;)

message 134: by Shirley (new)

Shirley | 4177 comments I might, if I can get it out of the library - I've never heard of this one! I've checked online and I can reserve it, so hopefully I can join in.

message 135: by Pink (new)

Pink Yes please Jean! I'd forgotten about The Infernal World of Branwell Brontë which sounds absolutely amazing - Brontes and du Maurier all in one book, can't wait!

Later this year sounds more feasible too, any month from May onwards works for me :)

message 136: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) I think May, July or August would be good. What do you think Shirley? May follows straight on from The Scapegoat in April, so it depends if you want a break or not! I think June is looking a bit daunting with the classics...

message 137: by Shirley (new)

Shirley | 4177 comments July would be good for me!

message 138: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Would that suit you too Pink? Shall we ask Leslie to add it to the readalong list?

message 139: by Pink (new)

Pink July is perfect, as I have no books planned for that month yet :)

message 140: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Great! :)I don't think I can remember ever planning my reading so far ahead. I'm enjoying having books to look forward to though!! (As long as I leave some room...)

message 141: by Leslie (new)

Leslie | 16369 comments When are you going to be reading The Parasites? I am interested in joining in that...

message 142: by Pink (new)

Pink and what about The Birds...

message 143: by Shirley (new)

Shirley | 4177 comments By the end of this marathon, there will be no Du Maurier book we haven't read!! I too want to read The Parasites, as I have a copy on my shelf, and The Birds too, which I'm sure I can get from the library.

message 144: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) LOL Shirley - but don't you remember asking me how many I had read? I googled a list and found I'd read 14 out of the 17 there. She has written a LOT!

Personally I didn't enjoy some of the Historical ones, although I'm sure others would. Nor did I care for The Parasites - sorry Leslie! Again, I'm sure the interest is there to do a readalong though.

And I'd love to read more of the short stories, which I think are way ahead of their time in some cases. "Du Maurier Marathon" - I like that! :D

message 145: by Pink (new)

Pink Wow Jean, I didn't realise you've read quite as many as 14! So many to choose from and such a variety of genres, I'm sure it will take us all year!

message 146: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) That's partly why I'm looking forward to The Infernal World of Branwell Brontë so much 'cos it's completely new to me :)

message 147: by Caolán (new)

Caolán (caolanmurray) | 41 comments Hi, I was just wondering, what is the Daphne du Maurier book for March? I've already read Rebecca, but would be interested in reading something else by her afterwards. :)

message 148: by Bionic Jean (last edited Jan 23, 2014 03:30AM) (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Caolan - it's Jamaica Inn in March.

Who else is in for this one? From earlier in this thread it looks as if Faye, Pink and Tracey want to read it. Lots of people voted in the poll - it won outright by 7 votes.

Jean - could you post a schedule of what books you are planning on so far?

message 150: by Bionic Jean (new)

Bionic Jean (bionicjean) Sure - I just didn't want to duplicate your official readalong list.

February - Rebecca (also group fiction read)
March - Jamaica Inn (though I may not join in on this myself)
April - The Scapegoat
July - The Infernal World of Branwell Brontë
