Cam | 6 comments Hello, I have a 5 year old who is turning out to be an avid and very advanced reader. So I have been trying to recollect and re-collect books I read when I was young that I think she would really enjoy.

The book (or books) I am thinking of is a collection of maybe 3 stories, all of which are about a fox. It was written for young readers, maybe pre-teen. I'm afraid I don't have much detail about the stories themselves, other than to say they were about life as a fox. I guess I would describe them as nature-fiction. While I don't remember a lot of the details about the stories themselves, I do remember the writing was very beautiful and descriptive (they would have to be with no dialogue and only a foxes antics to tell about) and always made me feel very peaceful.

If I remember correctly, one of the titles was fairly long (which I think was also the title of the collection), the others were shorter. The stories themselves were also fairly short, the whole collection being somewhere around 150 pages. I would have read these in the mid-late 80's but I can't really say when they might have been originally published because the natural theme didn't really provide any chronological frame of reference.

Sorry I don't have more info and I realize it might be tough to figure out by describing the physical properties of the book rather than the content, but I figured it couldn't hurt.

Thanks!

Cam | 6 comments Hmm...that sounds very familiar to one of the stories in the collection. I seem to remember something about a fire and a run-in with hounds/hunters. But a search on the author doesn't turn up anything else that would fit the collection, and that book at 200+ pages seems longer than what would have been included.

However, now I'm starting to think maybe it was a collection of related stories from different authors and possibly just excerpts of longer novels. I'll do a little more searching with this info and see if something turns up.

Thanks for the lead!

Cinnabar, the One O'Clock Fox, by Marguerite Henry?

Cinnabar, the One O'Clock Fox, by Marguerite Henry?"

No, those are close but seem a little more "character" driven than what I remember. The fox wasn't named and neither were any of the other animals/characters. What I recall is that it was more about the descriptive detail and really giving the reader a sense of the environment.

But thanks for the suggestions. If nothing else, I'm getting some great ideas for new books my daughter might like!

Teresa (hydrolagus) | 95 comments It sounds like it could be something by Sally Carrighar, though I don't know if any hers emphasize foxes. If not, she might be another one to look at, especially her One Day books.

None of her books that I found seemed to fit. Thanks for the suggestion!

Cam, are you still looking for this? Was it "Foxes Three?"

Ayshe | 4721 comments The Biography of a Silver Fox?
Not short stories and over 200 p. but as it's available online (https://openlibrary.org/books/OL23427...), you may have a look.

Hi Lobstergirl,
Sorry for the delay but no, it wasn't Foxes Three. There was no human narrative in the stories I recall and they took place entirely in the wild. As for my search I've sort of given up the Fox Hunt, as it were. I always keep an eye out for fox related themes, but I'm not actively looking for this title anymore.

Thanks to all for the suggestions!
