I agree, that's the reason why I feel kinda disconnected to this story. It really does sound informative. I knew I didn't like something, but until I've read your comment I didn't know what it was. It's not because he's a man thought, Bruiser, another work of his was wonderfully written and you feel a real attachment to the characters. I think the problem with this book is that he concentrated too much on world-building and forgot to work on his characters.

In hearth transplants it has been proven that people sometimes change after it. I'm not sure brain transplants are legal yet, but it's not that uncommon for the hearth transplant patients. Creepy? Yes. Makes you wonder about what it means to have a soul and what really happens to that soul after the body dies.... but what if parts of our former body live with the new host? Does the soul stay attached to that remaining piece of life?

Edit: could be why the writing seems informative and less about what the characters feel. We're kinda looking over them rather than being in their shoes?

Yup, this book is full of crazy ass adults. They even believe they are justified to do all this. That's one of the reasons why I just couldn't really get into the story. It frustrated me to no end, how a parent considered his child a property rather than a miracle and a thing to love. The present tense didn't help either.

It seems strange if the parents had to go through a similar process, being scared whether they would unwound when they were 13 to 18 y.o, shouldn't they be more considerate to their children?

Oh, but they didn't. The war didn't happen that long ago. That's why the idea was so appealing to everyone, because they never went through the same horrors and getting a new body part every time you needed one is just way to convenient to let go.

Pretty much. That's why tides are so expensive, because they are considered purer, because of their religious beliefs. Probably the hand of a murderer will end up on a low class guy that's going to put it to good use doing exactly the same thing.

This book is freaking depressing. At the beginning I wanted to read the sequel right away, but now I need to give it a month to recover.

I finally reached 50%. This book is somewhat unrealistic, but I really like the three main characters. So I guess I'm enjoying it ;)

Yes, the characters were nice, but they could have received a little more developing as well. The world is frightening though.
