Glenn Daniel Marcus I've just started re-reading some O. Henry. He is very witty. I cannot imagine how he wrote a story a week!

Ronald Pisaturo | 1 comments I am reading the original, 1818 edition of Frankenstein by Mary Shelley. The style is literate and romantic, but the content is cynical, as if deliberately anti-romantic—the opposite in that respect to Pride and Prejudice, which I read last month.
Frankenstein or the Modern Prometheus by Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley
Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

Hi Misty! I hope you enjoy "The Cats That Surfed The Web" as much as I did. I've got to get ahold of Book 2 in the series.
I also want to check out "The Spaceship Next Door" recommended by you.

I really enjoyed the second book in the time travel trailer series. Now I'm reading my library's paper book edition of "The Hawaiian Quilt", The Hawaiian Quilt by Wanda E. Brunstetter for daytime reading, and have to select a Kindle book to read at night on my Kindle Paperwhite.

Ahhh cool, I can download the second book from the (Cats That)-series from Kindle Unlimited for my Paperwhite! The Cats that Chased the Storm (The Cats That #2) by Karen Anne Golden

I was very happy with The Cats that Chased the Stormand also book 3 in this series~ The Cats that Told a Fortune (The Cats That #3) by Karen Anne Golden .

Then my next Kindle book was The Perfect Horse the Daring U.S. Mission to Rescue the Priceless Stallions Kidnapped by the Nazis by Elizabeth Letts which I found too depressing to finish.
I think my next Kindle read will be a cozy from a different series ~ Dark, Witch & Creamy (Bewitched by Chocolate #1) by H.Y. Hanna .

And I am still reading and enjoying my first Fairy read~ Granted by John David Anderson Which I will finish today.

I thoroughly enjoyed~ Granted by John David Anderson 5 -stars!
Now my next dead tree book from the library is ~

Wildwood
"A single mother. An abandoned farmhouse. An epic battle with the northern wilderness.

Broke and desperate, Molly Bannister accepts the ironclad condition laid down in her great-aunt’s will: to receive her inheritance, Molly must spend one year in an abandoned, off-the-grid farmhouse in the remote backwoods of northern Alberta. If she does, she will be able to sell the farm and fund her four-year-old daughter’s badly needed medical treatment.

With grim determination, Molly teaches herself basic homesteading skills. But her greatest perils come from the brutal wilderness itself, from blizzards to grizzly bears. Will she and her child survive the savage winter? Will she outsmart the idealist young farmer who would thwart her plan to sell the farm? Not only their financial future, but their very lives are at stake. Only the journal written by Molly's courageous great-aunt, the land’s original homesteader, inspires her to struggle on."

Margaret Standafer | 47 comments I was on a streak of not being able to find a book I enjoyed. It was so disheartening! I think I started five books only to give up on them after a chapter or two, which is really not like me, but I was either completely uninterested in the characters or turned off by the writing style. I'm happy to report my luck has turned. I read Paige's Turn Paige's Turn by Jennifer Peel and really enjoyed it:

With the encouragement of her beloved Aunt Mitzi, plain and overlooked Paige James left her hometown of Bella Port ten years ago and never looked back. But free-spirited Aunt Mitzi had plans for Paige to stop being pushed into the background. Those plans included leaving Paige as sole heir to her fortune and owner of her bookstore, Paige’s Turn. Begrudgingly, Paige returns home to fulfill her aunt’s last wishes, no longer the girl who’d left in baggy jeans and an ill-fitting t-shirt. Paige discovers, though, that Mitzi’s last wishes include a lot of meddling in her love life. From the grave, and with the help of some friends, Mitzi has set out to make sure Paige and Bella Port’s most eligible bachelor, Sam Kennedy, find true love together. What Mitzi didn’t foresee is the firestorm and gossip she created that paints Paige as a swindler and liar, leaving Sam to wonder about the grown woman Paige has become. It doesn’t help when Paige fires him after their first meeting. But as friendship blossoms between Paige and Sam, they find each other hard to resist. Was Mitzi right about the two of them? Will Paige finally have her turn?

I was invested in the characters from the start and was pleased to find it was clean.

I also read A Lake in Switzerland A Lake in Switzerland A Fabrian Books Feel-Good Novella (Lakeside series Book 1) by Melinda Huber , a novella that was free to read with Kindle Unlimited. It was okay. I was hooked by the setting as I've spent a great deal of time in Switzerland and specifically in the places mentioned in the book, but the story was rather predictable. It was a clean read.

I was supposed to be reading "Witch Chocolate Fudge", but after my son picked up my reserves that came into the library, I couldn't resist peeking at "The Marriage Lie", which was un-put-down-able! Unrelenting, intense, suspense! What a great mystery and an eye-opening "you can never really know someone", type of psychological suspense/thriller. Read it, only if you dare!

And now back to~
Witch Chocolate Fudge (Bewitched by Chocolate #2) by H.Y. Hanna

Hi Margaret, yes, it has been pretty quiet here lately. I have been binge-watching British shows on Netflix lately. That is why it is taking me so long to finish my books, LOL!

I am now reading Sweet Briar Rose by Lena Goldfinch .I have also just been diagnosed as of last week as Type-2 Diabetic so doing quite a bit of reading on that.

I also do plan to start reading Little Women.

Margaret Standafer | 47 comments C, I'm sorry to hear about your diagnosis. My father we diagnosed with Type-2 diabetes about 15 years ago. He's been fortunate in that he's been able to manage it mostly without medication, but there was a steep learning curve for him as he tried to get on top of, and stay on top of, all the testing he did throughout a given day. It got easier as time passed. I wish you all the best.

Thank you so much. :D So far just two pills a day and no testing. My learning curve is going to be diet, what foods are ok, and which are not. I did just join "The Cruise Control Diet" which seems very doable and a fraction of the cost of those like Nutri-System!

Kristi Cramer (kristicramer) | 109 comments I'm currently reading Daughter of Time by Sarah Woodbury. I'm not sure where I heard about this one. It's been in my eLibrary for a while. I might have heard about it here in this group. I'm at about 66% and so far it's very sweet, no sex or profanity, and I'm enjoying it rather a lot. I also don't have a good sense of what's going to happen, which is refreshing.

Also, if you like Time Travel, my newest book just came out, called Sherwood Rogue. 20th Century Kay finds herself in 12th Century Sherwood Forest, face to face with Robin Hood and his band of outlaws. It's not squeaky clean, as there's a fair bit of violence that's on the mildly graphic side, and 3 or 4 instances of profanity that's mostly invoking "JC" - no f bombs or other modern curses. It should be available to your library if you request it.

I tried to read Phantoms by Dean Koontz, but gave up at 40%, because I couldn't take anymore of the pervasive vulgarity.....including religious swears and "F" bombs. At 40% it just became downright FILTHY with crude sexual talk added by a sleazy character aimed towards a 17 year old girl!

Disgusts me to think of the filthy minds of authors like Koontz and King making millions off such trash they write, and how they get their jollies while writing such filthy scenes!

So now I'm starting what I hope will be fun, light, and clean~ My Ghostly Valentine A Haunting Paranormal Romantic Comedy (Banshee Creek Book 4) by Ani Gonzalez

message 275: by Libby (new)

Libby (bulldog369) I just started reading Joanna Fluke series called Hannah Swensen! So far I'm enjoying it. I just finished Breaking Wild by Diane Les Becquets it was okay. Just not the type of books I want for right now.

message 276: by Christine (new)

Christine Stobbe | 22 comments Sorry that Koontz didn't work out for you, C. I have never read him - now I won't try! I feel that authors who can't make a story work without all the filth and language don't have a good grasp of either the English language or good storytelling. A great book should be able to entertain anyone from late elementary school to someone in geriatric care.

I hoped My Ghostly Valentine: A Haunting Paranormal Romantic Comedy (Banshee Creek Book 4) was going to be a fun read, but sadly it deteriorated into a really boring snooze-fest!
Seemed to go on and on and on...... while not really saying anything interesting. I just didn't find it at all engaging, so had to give up, because it kept putting me to sleep!

Could have left out 200 pages of 'filler', and I found the female lead, unlikeable.

I've started 'These Haunts Are Made For Walking('Haunted Tour Guide Mystery)~ These Haunts are Made for Walking (Haunted Tour Guide Mystery #1) by Rose Pressey and thankfully, so far it is much more engaging!

Could not finish Area 51,due to all the profanity, nonsense about Atlantis, and couldn't get past that the author doesn't even know that Nellis AFB, and AREA 51, are both in Nevada..... NOT New Mexico!!!!!!

Next I tried The Dark Mirror (The Bridei Chronicles, #1) by Juliet Marillier , and couldn't finish it either! I just could not stomach that this little 4-year old toddler was taken from his home to be trained as a Druid! I DESPISED his inhuman teacher and robbing this baby of any childhood, not even a single child to play with or have for a friend. The constant schooling and teaching a toddler to FIGHT, was asinine, and I could take no more!

So now I am going to start ~ Little Women. :D
Little Women (Little Women, #1) by Louisa May Alcott

Christine Stobbe | 22 comments Lol. Little Women is a guaranteed clean, fun read. Have you read the sequels to it, C? Good Wives, Little Men, and Jo's Boys. I have all four books - very old copies. They belonged to my mother. Good Wives is quite dog-eared, literally. Our puppy got hold of it forty years ago, but fortunately, someone saved it before he took out more than one corner.

I then tried the movie but didn't care for it either. I'm up for a buddy read of Eight Cousins or An Old-Fashioned Girl, if anyone's interested.

message 286: by The1selectioner (new)

The1selectioner | 38 comments Currently I'm reading a middle grade novel called Forget Me Not by Ellie Terry. It's in verse and prose and follows Calli a girl with tourette syndrome, and Jinsong, a popular boy who struggles to be open about their friendship. So far it's not bad, perhaps little odd in some places, but it's interesting and I'm learning a lot about tourettes. Additionally, I started the children's classic Daddy-Long-Legs by Jean Webster, couple of days ago and I'm really liking it so far.
