Just finished the first two books in the Cardwell Ranch series by B.J. Daniels, who is a new author for me. I was very happy with them, except the first book with some scattered curses and one not too detailed sex scene, isn't as squeaky clean as the second book is. Crime Scene At Cardwell Ranch (Cardwell Ranch #1) by B.J. Daniels

Justice at Cardwell Ranch & Crime Scene at Cardwell Ranch (Cardwell Ranch #1-2) by B.J. Daniels

The other books in the series don't sound as appealing to me, so I am going to start another of her series with~ Branded (Whitehorse, MT Chisholm Cattle Co., #1) by B.J. Daniels

Mary Aragona I highly recommend the book "Make the Bread, Buy the Butter" by Jennifer Reese. It's a cookbook, but it's also a memoir about the author's experiences trying different experiments to save money after being laid off of work - buying goats & chickens, making cheese, etc. It's hysterically funny; I haven't laughed this hard during a book for a long time.

Kristi Cramer (kristicramer) | 109 comments I just finished His and Hers and enjoyed it very much. I would call it a love story rather than a romance, and it was very refreshing to me to not be pummeled with angst and the usual tropes. Here's a link to my review:

(May be a tad bit of gushing involved.)

Couldn't even finish 14 for all the crude talk, and profanity, so I also removed 'The Fold'[by him] from my TBR list!

While I am waiting for Dark Matter to be returned to my library, I decided to read The Passenger which was available for download.

The Passenger by Lisa Lutz

The Cat Who Saw Red (Cat Who... #4) by Lilian Jackson Braun
The Cat Who Saw Red by Lilian Jackson Braun

and

The Incredible Journey by Sheila Burnford
The Incredible Journey by Sheila Burnford (Am reading this with my 10 year old daughter in our Mother/Daughter Reading Club. When I read it at 10, I didn't realize how well written it was. Am really appreciating it as an adult.)

Thank's Kristi, The Passenger was a compelling read, because it compelled me to finish, it grabbed me from the start, despite really unlikeable characters[even the protagonist], and far more profanity, including "F" bombs and religious swears, than I will usually tolerate! I was satisfied with the ending, as well.
Dark Matter has not returned to the library yet.

As soon as I finish Seafled Seafled (Seabound Chronicles #3) by Jordan Rivet the last book in a trilogy , I want to read ~ The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan which has been on my TBR list for awhile.

Didn't like and couldn't finish-The Joy Luck Club, so now thanks to winning the new book[my 4th win in the Goodreads Giveaway!] by John Grisham-"The Whistler" I am getting ready to start my first book by him.

Both The Whistler by John Grisham and

Outfoxed (Andy Carpenter, #14) by David Rosenfelt were just ok mysteries, so next up an Amish mystery by one of my favorite authors of Amish-themed books Marta Perry. Where Secrets Sleep (House of Secrets #1) by Marta Perry

Carol (carol07) Am reading The House at the Edge of Night by Catherine Banner The House at the Edge of Night and am really loving it! It is a thick, yet low key book about multiple generations of a family on a make believe Italian Island. The story starts about 1914 and is currently in 1971.

This was a book I won on a Goodreads giveaway. I would highly recommend it.

message 119: by Lyndsey (new)

Lyndsey | 27 comments Not anything "clean" haha!

Yeah ... It's a great serious though. Wonderfully written.

The Passage by Justin Cronin is the first book.

I'm about to finish the third. I feel like I can finally move on with my life once it's over. Ha!

No explicit sex. But definite violence and definite Language.

Actually. I just remembered there is some "sex". And crude and gross but no "sex scene" if that makes any sense.
Definitely not my typically genre. My husband was reading them. I decided to try. I did read some non fiction titles that were pretty good if anyone is interested.

I'm also reading The BFG with my son ;)

Couldn't finish "Saving Texas" by Nancy Stancill, because it is not clean! The main character is a disgusting, promiscuous ,SLUT,who I believe, has sex with every man she comes into contact with! The book seems to be more about those events than any mystery! Cursing and crude sexual talk, as well.

So now reading ~ The Cavanaugh House by Elizabeth Meyette

Yeah, I really wish books had ratings like the movies, for all those times that reviewers don't mention when it's garbage!

message 124: by Carol (new)

Carol (carol07) That's a good idea. Remember years ago, Tipper Gore was pushing to get ratings on music albums. Do they still do that? I think on itunes, it is either explicit or clean.

message 125: by Kristi (new)

Kristi Cramer (kristicramer) | 109 comments I've started putting ratings on my reviews. While I write mostly clean books, I will read a lot of different books - so I'll say what the rating is, plus why I rated it that way. Kind of like TV ratings - PG17 L (for language) for instance, or R SVL (for Sex, Violence, and Language) or PG 13 - parental guidance suggested due to mature themes. Or whatever. I make sure it is clear to anyone reading my reviews whether the book is "clean" or not.

message 126: by Carol (new)

Carol (carol07) I am now reading Closed Casket by Sophie Hannah Closed Casket by Sophie Hannah. The author has OKed to write sequals to Agatha Christie's Hercule Poirot Mysteries series. She has written 2 books so far. They were not bad. I would say they are rated PG. There is some violence that is described.

I do remember that, but I have no idea how they are rated. I will have my son check on 'Rap' albums at Best Buy, since those are the most likely to be offensive.

Re: Kristi, I like your rating system! :D

The Cavanaugh House was a 3-star read for me, some scattered mild swears, pretty interesting mystery, the ending just felt really odd, with characters suddenly acting out of character and unbelievably so, with no explanation! It felt unconnected to the book that I had just read!

Just starting ~ Powwowing Among the Pennsylvania Dutch A Traditional Medical Practice in the Modern World by David W. Kriebel for daytime reading and ~ Murder & Mayhem in Goose Pimple Junction (Goose Pimple Junction #1) by Amy Metz for nighttime reading on my Kindle Paperwhite.

Since I have already downloaded it will also be starting the prequel to the "Posadas County Mystery" series~One Perfect Shot: A Posadas County Mystery

I had to stop reading another book~ "The Body at Auercliff", thanks to all the reviewers not even mentioning the countless "F" bombs spewed by the disgusting filthy-mouthed slime-ball mother of the MC! If reviewers had mentioned this, I could have saved my time, and avoided this garbage!

Same with "Death Without Company" (Walt Longmire #2)unlike the TV series, deputy Victoria spews continuous "F" bombs.

So then I started ~ Evernight (Evernight, #1) by Claudia Gray that I got as a Kindle freebie. This is my first vampire read besides Dracula, which did not impress me. Hoping that I will enjoy this one, much more.
