The official Amazon editorial review for this book describes it as “part Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, part Night at the Museum, and a whole lot of fun.” That’s pretty much the perfect description for this quick, light read. I think this book has a lot of appeal for reluctant readers. Grabenstein includes a lot of word puzzles and brain teasers that readers can try to figure out before characters in the story do. There are also many nods to modern classics from children’s literature, so I had fun every time I recognized one. There is probably not enough weight or depth for this to be a Newbery winner, but it is definitely good choice for anyone who likes games of any kind.
For the reader who likes board games, word games, reads a lot and widely, enjoys challenging puzzles, relishes strategy and might have a competitive streak; this book is for you. Fun read.
The two words that keep popping into my head when I think about Mr. Lemoncello's Library is "librarian bait." (I think I even read the phrase in a Goodreads review first.) That's really what it is. It's a fast read, filled with action, and non-stop puzzles, but really, that's it. It's a nice, quick read in between more serious contenders.
