Yeah, I've heard Storm of swords is supposed to be amazing.

It's been almost a year, and I'm still trying to get to the middle of the book.

Bought the ebook on a deal (when I couldn't put my hands on the paperback) in Jan 2011 & finally read and finished from Feb - Aug 2012.
Hit a major roadblock when (view spoiler) . But after that, settled in to a chapter or 2 at a sitting habit. Never really compulsively drew me in, like some, or compelled me to read further.
Maybe someday. But I have so many other series on the stack before then.

I'm really not sure what Martin was doing in 4. He went from a lot of action directly narrated, to having new, rather extraneous characters relate having seen things happen. It made for a very boring read.

I was hooked in the first two books but really suffered through the 3rd and 4th before I could give in.
So if you don't love it half way through the first book, I recommend giving up- because I read four of them before I quit and I still have no satisfactory endings-

It didn't really pop for me until Cersei revealed that Jaime was Joffrey's real father. Since then I've just been devouring it.

Ermmm, you're lucky you quit because he's not done writing the series. No one has satisfactory endings yet.

Yeah, that's how it felt to me too. Given that, it's probably better to read big chunks of it if you want to get the full effect.

Me too! I usually devour my books, but I've been reading the fifth book now for about eight weeks and I'm only 400 pages in! Lol. I love the story, but it is just really "heavy" reading and can be challenging to get through!

Just an FYI: the fourth season of the show will be based on the second half of the third book, since the third season was just the first half of the third book. That said, the fourth season will probably incorporate some small bits and pieces from the fourth and fifth books, as the material left in the third book will probably not be enough to be stretched into a full season. Even the third season included a storyline from the fifth book.

I'm like you, it took me over a week to read number 3 and normally a book that size would only take me a day or two. I'll continue reading the series only because I hate not finishing a series.

I mean the books are definitely worth reading, but there are books out there that you just absolutely can't put down... This series is NOT among them.

I read through far more of this series than I would normally because people kept insisting the next book would get better....
in my opinion, it really didn't, the first few books are al boring, slow and uninspired. I'd much rather spend my time reading good books. :)
