Jacob I'm on page 230 of 690,so far I've been enjoying it, but the story still hasn't really popped for me. How much longer before it does?

Kiki Bice Honestly, it took me about 6 weeks to struggle through this book! I started it a few different times and put it down just to restart it again a month or two later. And I didn't really get into it until I was almost through with it. The series just gets better and better, though!

Yeah, I've heard Storm of swords is supposed to be amazing.

Sherry Stevens My husband read the books long before I did and he said it took into the second book before it really got rolling. I didn't read it until after watching the first season on HBO, so I went through it pretty easy. It's definitely a series you have to be patient with. It's enjoyable but they get a lot better as you go.

Jordan I'm usually a read-an-entire-book-in-an-hour kind of girl, but this books I really savored. I think I read three chapters every night and in my opinion, it makes it a bit easier to read. But I was into it from the start. :)

It's been almost a year, and I'm still trying to get to the middle of the book.

Kirby I think I was about halfway through the first one before I got to where I didn't want to put it down.

Robert Wright I bought the paperback when it first came out around '97-'98. Got a few chapters in. >snooze<

Bought the ebook on a deal (when I couldn't put my hands on the paperback) in Jan 2011 & finally read and finished from Feb - Aug 2012.

Hit a major roadblock when (view spoiler). But after that, settled in to a chapter or 2 at a sitting habit. Never really compulsively drew me in, like some, or compelled me to read further.

Maybe someday. But I have so many other series on the stack before then.

Andrew I have read the first four books of this series over the past year and despite my not wanting to read them successively, am fully engrossed in the story. I am actually holding off on reading "A Dance with Dragons" because I don't want my Westeros experience to end. It's easy for me to say, but I would suggest reading "A Game of Thrones" in its entirety (all 690 pages) before making a judgement on whether you should continue. If you aren't into it at that point, feel free to stop. For me, "A Storm of Swords", as one commenter repeated, is amazing, but not because it's a great work of literature. I'm invested in the characters and need to know how this "game" plays out. I'm not sure anyone pushing through the earlier books to get to an anticipated point of greatness will be rewarded.

MARTIN MOHAR I liked it early on but after every page it gets better.

Nathan For me it only took a couple of chapters to get hooked. I've now read the first three books in the series and each one was better than the last. I love how all the characters have developed so far. The only thing I'm unhappy with is that after I'm done reading books 4 and 5 I'll have to wait forever for the next books. Estimated 2015 for book 6? Estimated 2019 for book 7?! Plus that there might be an 8th book as well. They're too good to have to wait this long!!

Jon I've read all the books in the series so far. Its an epic story but I did find that I struggled through at certain times in certain books. Overall though I think because scale of the story it's a must read.

Gabriela I got hooked right from the start :)

Candy Sparks I read it via audiobook. I find if it is hard to read then try it in audiobook version because it works. I did that with The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, which I felt was dry.

Claire I was hooked by the second chapter, and went right through the series. Book 4 was almost enough to make me quit, but Book 5 made me glad I didn't stop.

I'm really not sure what Martin was doing in 4. He went from a lot of action directly narrated, to having new, rather extraneous characters relate having seen things happen. It made for a very boring read.

Roderick I read it rather slowly through the month of July. For me, things didn't really get interesting until I reached around page 250 or so. It moved sort of slow for me but once things got going, the book really got interesting!

Kristin If you aren't hooked by page fifty, it's not for you. This book is heavy on the detail, which can drag things down in some books. Know this, this series is not truly action-based. It is more like a fantastical history - battles, quests for power, and family lore.

Paula For me the question wasn't how long to get into it- it was how long to get back out... lol
I was hooked in the first two books but really suffered through the 3rd and 4th before I could give in.
So if you don't love it half way through the first book, I recommend giving up- because I read four of them before I quit and I still have no satisfactory endings-

M.K. Theodoratus I use my bad hip as an excuse, but I gave up on the books. I watch the DVDs of the TV program.

It didn't really pop for me until Cersei revealed that Jaime was Joffrey's real father. Since then I've just been devouring it.

Astrid I'd say about halfway through the first book - that's when things started going smoother for me and by the second book I was hooked :)

Ermmm, you're lucky you quit because he's not done writing the series. No one has satisfactory endings yet.

P.T. Mayes About 150 pages in. Each of the books contain slow points that are a drag to read through, but you know GRRM is setting something good up for later. There's going to be a pay-off. But most people I know who read LOTR gave up in The Two Towers, only to pick it up again later and finish it.

Yeah, that's how it felt to me too. Given that, it's probably better to read big chunks of it if you want to get the full effect.

Laura Richardson I never knew it took so long for so many people to get into Game of Thrones, it had me at, "We should start back."..... Get it? Anyway, I was reeled in really fast, perhaps that's because I picked the books up right after I watched the first season and zoomed through them all one after another. Some have said that there are slow-points, but you'll love the characters you're reading about so much that you won't mind (or maybe that's just me?).

Mweene It grabbed me on page one and keep me going until A Dance With Dragons. Seriously, i read all five books back to back over 2 months and right now I am having trouble reading anything else.

Jennifer Wow I'm in the 3rd book and ITS STILL SO SLOW lol!! I like the story so I will continue reading but it literally has taken me months just to get to the 3rd book. This is coming from a girl who (usually) reads a book in 2 days!!

Me too! I usually devour my books, but I've been reading the fifth book now for about eight weeks and I'm only 400 pages in! Lol. I love the story, but it is just really "heavy" reading and can be challenging to get through!

message 29: by Narda (new) - added it

Narda Bradshaw It seemed like it took me forever to read the first one, but I did end up getting into it finally. The second one didn't take as long but it did take me awhile. I am enjoying the series, it's just taking me a lot longer than it usually does to finish. I'm usually the type who sits and reads until the book is finished. I'm waiting for the third one to come in and will hopefully be able to get right into it.

Charbel Tadros I watched the series as I was reading the books. It helped me put the characters into perspective and get into the books more easily.

Vickie Some books are not for everyone. I loved the series and shared it with my brother who read and liked a lot of the same books as I liked, but he never got into this series. Go a little longer and if it doesn't catch you, let it go.

message 32: by Tom (new) - rated it 5 stars

Tom Cantwell I was hooked from the very beginning!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Aisia Fauzi I finish the first book in a week, can wait to get my hands on the second one. I'm planning to finish the fourth book before season 4 starts at HBO.

Mitali Icha wrote: "I'm planning to finish the fourth book before season 4 starts at HBO."

Just an FYI: the fourth season of the show will be based on the second half of the third book, since the third season was just the first half of the third book. That said, the fourth season will probably incorporate some small bits and pieces from the fourth and fifth books, as the material left in the third book will probably not be enough to be stretched into a full season. Even the third season included a storyline from the fifth book.

m I have only read book 1 & 2 and think they are great, but they also took several hundred pages before I could really get into them. Maybe I am beginning to struggle through the fantasy genre at my age (40). I started Book 2 in September 2013, and have only just finished it (Feb 2014). I just had difficulty reading more than a chapter at a time until the end of the book.

I'm like you, it took me over a week to read number 3 and normally a book that size would only take me a day or two. I'll continue reading the series only because I hate not finishing a series.

Kelly Duncan It took me forever to get into this properly, but i would say after about page 300 I was done pretty fast and loved it from then. Finding A clash of kings a lot easier to read!

Japhe I'm glad so many people find these books hard to get through as I do. I mean honestly, I often wait months between reading a chapter when i come across one of the more tedious story arcs. (any that isn't tyrion, dany, or arya)

I mean the books are definitely worth reading, but there are books out there that you just absolutely can't put down... This series is NOT among them.

Felix By no means an easy read, but the saga is well worth it! Though GRRM- when he started the series said it would be at most a 4 book series, now I've heard at least 7. 2 more books at a average of 4 year to wait per book = 8 more years. GRRM current age 65 = 73 at series end, I guess it's doable. Argh....

Gareth The series is great to read, it took me about a year to read the whole series. I can usually get through a 500 page book in a few days. Some authors are hard to read all in one go. I found the same when reading Lord of the Rings.

Kaye Dil Loved the books ... love the series.... love George RR Martin!

Matthias Hejlskov Jacob wrote: "I'm on page 230 of 690,so far I've been enjoying it, but the story still hasn't really popped for me. How much longer before it does?"

I read through far more of this series than I would normally because people kept insisting the next book would get better....

in my opinion, it really didn't, the first few books are al boring, slow and uninspired. I'd much rather spend my time reading good books. :)

Heather It took me awhile to get through the first book, but I think that's b/c I watched the first season first and it was pretty much word for word, so I mostly skimmed. But when I started the second book I was really invested in the story and couldn't put it down. Finished books 2-4 in less than a week. Still need to get my hands on book 5.

Ronjaws Hooked from the beginning.
