Does this take place in the U.S.? Or somewhere else? Is it a straight thriller, or does it have science fiction or supernatural elements? Why is it important (to the story) that the ex soldier is illiterate? Any idea what year it was published, if not, when did you read it?

It takes place in the US.
Its a straight thriller.
Its important that he's illiterate because since he's the only one left in the control room, he needs to enter the code to stop the launch, he has a hard time doing it because he can't read.
I don't think it a very old book I read it like 5 years ago. Thank you so much for your intrest.
