Why are messages about martyrdom and victimhood so galvanizing to a group of people who are objectively not being persecuted?

Jimmy The article never discusses Egypt, Indonesia, Pakistan, Iraq, Afghanistan, and other countries. Not very thorough in my view.

George King (kinggeorge) | 141 comments Every time someone points out an instance where this group has violated the separation of church and state, they claim they're being victimized. There is also the Fox-created "war on Christmas," which is a myth, but not to these people. And of course, because atheists are more vocal than ever, Christians whine that they are being victimized.

The article isn't about actual persecution of Christians, but about the delusion shared by many religious conservatives in the US that they are being "persecuted" when in fact they are simply losing their privileged position.

Alicja (darkwingduckie7) | 25 comments I think this is what happens when a privileged group loses its privilege, especially in the US where "equality" is celebrated, at least theoretically (not so much in practice). They think that their privilege is not actually privilege but just the way it is so when they start losing this superior status it seems like discrimination to them because suddenly they aren't entitled to the same special treatment anymore. They just don't seem to understand what discrimination means since they've never had to experience it, so this loss seems like discrimination.
