I think his part i.e Book 2, was just to take a view onto what was going through Jacob's mind having to cope with Bella's decision of going through with the mysterious pregnancy. He indeed was in a fragile/raged state. I believe it was necessary in the sense to let the reader know what he had to lose if something had gone wrong. He clearly had feelings for her and the fact he thought that her decision to put her life in danger was foolish, angered him. He just needed to blow off steam. It could be said true to it being the best part if you're not satisfied in general by the story of Twilight. It's just different than the rest of it...
I'm surprised no one brought up something awful that Jacob did in his POV that I feel was down right disrespectful and unforgivable. With a few exceptions that he's done I was on Jacob's side, he seemed like he was the only voice of reason, though only doing it because he loved Bella and was trying to convince her to be with him.But I hated Jacob's POV and hated him because of all the awful 'jokes' he made on Rosalie. I absolutely hated that and even more because no one stood up for her, not even Emmett. It wasn't funny at all and he had no reason to do it. I always felt like if you're the butt of a joke then you have to be laughing too for it to be funny and not hurtful. If one is making jokes about someone to hurt them and not be funny, you need to look at your life and choices. If the person isn't laughing then it's not funny at all. It's not funny is you're hurting someone. That was such a dick thing for him to do and I hated him and everyone for it.
Breaking Dawn was a disaster from start to finish on everyone's part, but Jacob's is in the ranking for the worst person in Breaking Dawn.

Without question, Emmett should have ripped Jacob's head off the minute he threw the dog bowl at Rosalie's head. If Emmett were in the room, I can't see him just standing there chuckling while his mate was being insulted. Heck the first blonde joke should have had him up in Jacob's grill and Jake pinned against the wall.
Just my opinion, but all the blonde jokes seemed like SM was indulging any issues she might have had with blonde girls in her past. Maybe it's just coincidence but it seemed that all the females Bella had issues with were blonde, or some shade of blonde. Lauren Mallory, Rosalie, Tanya and Jane all had blonde hair. All the positive female characters were brunette: Alice, Esme, Renee and Angela. Okay, Jessica Stanley is brunette and is a wobbler. She started off as Bella's friend, moved away from her, then came back. Maybe it was coincidence, but that was my thought about why all the blonde jokes.
Not only did Jacob come off as a complete jerk to me, but it seemed that SM got a lot of her characters wrong in the last book. I mean Carlisle is supposed to be such a devoted doctor, and was able to deny his thirst for a month even while a newborn. So why was he off on a sudden hunting trip when his patient is in critical condition, and about to give birth? The real Carlisle we know should have been standing vigil at Bella's bedside, and sent somebody else for take out. Just so much wrong with the last book.
FALSE.I really didn't like Jacobs POV and I found it kind of boring.
Everyone can have their own opinion though, thats just what I think about the book.

I wouldn't say 100% true because it wasn't the BEST part of the book but I agree with Camille - the chapter titles were the part that I looked forward to the most as I read on. They were hilarious!

In that way, books are better than their movies.

First-person is more intimate, but is more limiting, which is why SM switched out of Bella's voice while she was preggers. But it can be overdone. If you've read any fanfiction, some writers switch POV so much it distracts from the story.
Personally, I thought SM chose the wrong viewpoint when she went into Jacob's head. This was supposed to be Bella and Edward's story. If SM HAD to switch POV, it would have been much better to hear Edward's side of the story.

(The word omnipotent kept coming to my mind earlier). But the thing is that even in movies you can't get into the characters' heads and that's due to the whole omniscient thing - it's as if an all-seeing figure is present showing you everything that's happening.
Yeah that's true. I once read a story where each chapter alternated between 2 different perspectives and it was confusing at times but it still worked out somehow.
Yeah I agree, I would have been good to get into Edward's head - I read a bit of Midnight Sun and I liked Edward's perspective better than Bella's. Plus I'd really like to know what was going through his mind from when he first discovers that Bella's pregnant onwards. But I still liked the fact that we got the chance to get into Jacob's head in my opinion.
FALSE. I like Jacob, but I couldn't wait for his POV to be oveerrr. It drove me crazy. All I wanted was to hear about Edward and Bella and it was Jacob Jacob Jacob. Soooooo glad he didn't narrate the entire thing.
