Yes but that was AFTER 1994.

Mike, if you're referring to the Spanish Flu Pandemic it was in 1918-1919, not 1915.

Groovy: Exactly. That's why I think their remake of BATTLESTAR GALACTICA was highly BLASPHEMOUS.

Amber Martingale Mike (the Paladin) wrote: "I guess. Back when...there were programs like a talk show with Harlen Ellison discussing science fiction."

I don't remember that one in particular but I DO remember when they played DECENT quality shows like the ORIGINAL BSG or BUCK ROGERS IN THE 25TH CENTUIRY...rather than crap like the Sharknado trilogy!

Scott Bell | 50 comments *sigh* Nobody appreciates cin-ey-mah these days. The subtle nuance, the satirical commentary on our materialistic society, the depth of characterization...The Sharkanado series is such a masterful blend of the film-makers art combined with the commentator's critical eye.
It takes true genius to understand the dichotomy of man versus flying shark.

message 254: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale *snorts, not appreciating, though understanding, your attempt at sarcastic humor.*

message 255: by Scott (new)

Scott Bell | 50 comments That's okay. Not everyone thinks I'm as funny as I do.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 652 comments Sorry about the date snafu. I'd actually put 1919 but changed it. That used to happen on high school tests.

As for production quality, I'm still trying to get over the dearth of Bruce Campbell productions...

Mike, that happens when your fingers are moving faster than your brain is. :)

I think I read in an issue of EW that Bruce Campbell's working on a new DEVIL DEAD movie or even a TV series.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 652 comments I saw that...still he's just never been recognized for the monumental talent he is....

Francesca | 8 comments @John, I can't remember if I listed Silicon Valley on my list (and on the app on my phone I can't scroll back and look at it very easily) but if not I should have done. That show is fantastic. I love it!

A lot of channels do that. National Geographic is terrible now that it's owned by Murdoch.

And remember when TLC was "The Learning Channel". All it teaches now is how NOT to behave in public.

I agree about SyFy and how can AMC be American Movie Classics if it doesn't show any movies from before the 80's? (Though it does have good original programming.)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 652 comments I agree. AMC was a channel I really wanted "back when" cable was a bit new. But they never show and "Classic Movies" anymore they barely show movies but have their own series. If you really want classic movies Turner is about all that's out there.

There's another channel but it's got a really high number. I think it's the MGM channel. TCM is really good.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 652 comments I don't think we have the MGM channel. I don't think we have FXM either.

message 265: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) Yeah, they're pretty high up the guide - so I don't think everyone does. We have to get a lot of channels we don't want so we can get the ones we do. Too bad we can't do it a la carte. But that's not cost effective.

message 266: by Mike (the Paladin) (last edited Nov 21, 2015 03:04PM) (new)

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 652 comments I don't think our local Comcast carrier even offers them. We have the HBOs, Cinamax, Showtime, Encore channels, Stars, Movie Channel (though we don't get TMC), etc.

My daughter pays for cable. If I were paying for it I wouldn't have near that number of channels.

That's this generation's notion of a "Classic," though you can occasionally get them to play movies from the earlier decades during their month long Oscars marathon. If it won an Oscar, regardless of what year it was made, you'll get to see it even the 1953 version of THE WAR OF THE WORLDS! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wxTP0... Unless it's TCM I'm remembering. I don't know. I don't watch TV at home anymore since I can't afford cable or satellite.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 652 comments Like I said. My daughter pays for cable...

message 269: by Kirsten (new)

Kirsten (kmcripn) I'm looking forward to the Expanse series. I'll have to DVR it as SyFy overdoes their commercial breaks.

message 270: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale EVERY channel does that, Kirsten! I HATE commercials!

I don't have kids, Mike.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 652 comments Mine are grown. My daughter lives with me. I tease her that since her mom passed she's afraid to leave the old man alone.

message 272: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale Maybe she is but isn't that better than her accusing you of being afraid to be alone? *wink*

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 652 comments I suppose. Actually what I'm afraid of is getting to a point where I can't live alone, LOL.

But I always have to be sure the girls are gone before she gets home...

message 274: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale LOL

message 275: by Groovy (new)

Groovy Lee Amber, do you live in the US? Even if you can't afford cable or satellite, which I can't, you can still get free TV...NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX and so on...

message 276: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale Not w/o an antenna, I'm afraid and I can't even afford a second hand pair of rabbit ears style. Been that way since US TV went to digital a couple years back.

I know because I tried to pick up the local affiliates and got nothing but snow.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 652 comments There are some you can stream on your computer and I think some are available without extra charge.

Of course mostly the shows are at best fluff and at worst drek.

message 278: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale Not allowed to do streaming at public library. I have no computer at home.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 652 comments Ouch. Okay.

message 280: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale Happens, Mike. Library was closed yesterday and Thursday.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 652 comments Well, take comfort. You're not really missing a lot. Hang in as they say.

Amber Martingale LOL. I get my TV fix when I go to my local dive bar, FRIDAY'S SOUTH, or to a family member's house.

Mike (the Paladin) (thepaladin) | 652 comments Haven't been to a bar in years..but I do watch Bar Rescue on Spike sometimes...

Well, my wife said "yes you picked her to win, pick the other winners.

So I did guess correctly

Vicky Pattinson would win Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here

Now my guess are

Georgia May Foote to Win Strictly Come Dancing (Jay second)

Louisa Johnson to win the X Factor.

Let's see if I can get all three !!

message 289: by Amber (new)

Amber Martingale Good luck!

message 290: by Francesca (new)

Francesca | 8 comments @John, I think it's much better! I've always liked The Big Bang Theory but I feel like it's gone downhill a bit, but I think I'm very much in the minority on that one. Silicon Valley feels more original too, less like a typical sitcom.
