Jeffrey Marshall (jmarsh17) | 57 comments "Blood" - An Irish series on Acorn TV that features flawed characters, great acting, intense family dysfunction and, at its heart, a doctor who has great standing in the community but is revealed to be dupliticious, devious, and more - but wait for the ending.

Kandice | 2061 comments I just started
The Dead Zone" based on characters in the book of the same name by Stephen King. It's an old series, but I like it so far. I am also thrilled to see there are six seasons, so I can watch a pretty long time, even in todays' binging era.

W | 34 comments Watching Star Trek,The Original Series these days after many years.
And Friends, yet again. It is my favorite series of all time.

message 664: by Aditya (new)

Aditya | 1631 comments I so actively post in the movie thread, don't think I have posted here. Anyway I prefer binging series after the whole thing is over, so that I don't waste my time on shows that ended on a cliffhanger. So not a lot of ongoing series here. My all time favorite series is

The Shield - Plays out like a great tragedy but never forgets its genre roots. Plus it is the only TV series I have seen that remained great from start to the finish. Easily the best ending in a long running series I have seen.

Other series I loved, Dramas:

Game of Thrones - If its ending has not been a disaster, this would be No. 1
24 - Early seasons only, it later became a parody of itself
The Sopranos - Starts great, ends great lags in the middle
Damages - Glenn Close is brilliant
Bloodlines - Underrated Netflix original with a stellar cast
Justified - Had some great dialogue and was consistently engaging
The Good Wife - Probably the best case of the week show ever, I love well written court dramas

Comedies:

The Office (USA version) - Great characters, relatable humor
Two and a Half Men - Early seasons only with Sheen. It is crass, sexist and misanthropic butt it makes me laugh out loud

Mini Series/ Anthologies:

Chernobyl - The best in this category
True Detective - I love how different each season is
The Sinners - Watched the first two seasons only, great why-dun-it

I loved Daredevil! I actually like all of Netflix Marvel series to some degree. Daredevil is my favorite with Jessica Jones and Nick Cage closely tied for second. The Punisher was so incredibly well done and exhaustively researched for PTSD that it was hard to watch.

message 678: by Kandice (new)

Kandice | 2061 comments I am a bit addicted to what my family calls old, bad shows. I love 70's television and when I don't feel well I always end up having The Incredible Hulk or The Planet of the Apes on as I doze and just veg out. I'm perfectly happy when I stumble on reruns of The Love Boat, Wonder Woman, Charlie's Angels, The 6 Million Dollar Man, The Bionic Woman and Star Trek. Not to mention The Twilight Zone, Outer Limits and Perry Mason, and Dark Shadows, which are considerably older.

I also tend to choose newer shows that are shot with odd filters. I never notice it, but my family does. I can only imagine they feel nostalgic to me.

Kandice | 2061 comments I started Enola Holmes on Netflix last night. Holmes has always been one of my favorite characters, and Henry Cavill's Holmes is sublime! I don't know if I am going to like the show yet, but I know I like him! Very Close second to Benedict Cumberbatch's Holmes.

Thanks for that. I found 24 a little frantic, and like a slower burn so maybe it's for me :)

message 692: by Aditya (new)

Aditya | 1631 comments Then it should be perfect for you, neither as fast paced for 24 nor as slow as The Americans. I too might go back to it some day.

I'm currently watching Life. Couldn't get into Us.

As for Homeland, watched from the start when it first aired years ago and totally loved it. My daughter is currently binge watching it now and loving it. It's not perfect, but overall I'm glad I went there. They finished it off beautifully. Carrie was a great character. Couldn't get into The Americans.

I made the mistake of thinking Enola Holmes was a series until we started to watch. Not sure about Cavill as Holmes. He's easy on the eye but a bit wooden at times I find. The film was ok.

Des was a brilliant drama. Tennant's performance was outstanding.

Oh and Sean, I can't wait for Line Of Duty to return, apparently they're filming now.

Has anyone seen The Wire? I'm sort of two thirds into the first episode and it's not holding my interest.

I've tried a few episodes of Breaking Bad and lost interest. I've heard you have to push through season one as season two is where it takes off. Did anyone else find that.

I've done The Sopranos. Brilliant but lame ending. GOT. Just brilliant. I'm still missing Drogon!!!

message 698: by Thomas (new)

Thomas (tom471) | 1341 comments I enjoyed The Wire, Breaking Bad and the Sopranos
I watched 1 yr of The Americans, then stopped.

message 699: by Aditya (new)

Aditya | 1631 comments Paul wrote: "How did you find 'The Americans' Aditya? Watchable despite its slowness?"

I watched it to the end, after finishing it wish I had not. That was the show that convinced me watching till the end is not worth it if you are not enjoying it as much as everyone else. It had its moments but it did not deserve the 50-60 hour time commitment. I was a lot more stretched for time when I started Homeland, I would not have finished Americans had I started it when I was similarly busy. Americans works better as a character driven drama rather than a thriller.

Breaking Bad initial seasons are pretty weak compared to the hype but it ends very strong (probably the very best ending of all time along with The Shield). I agree The Sopranos is brilliant, its ending worked for me but can be very divisive. Game of Thrones has an awful ending or else it would be my favorite TV series of all time.

I could not get into The Wire at all, struggled through the first season. Come to think of it The Wire was exactly like The Americans, huge critical darling that always remained on brink of cancellation because no one saw it while it was airing on TV. Both are way too slow. I don't mind a slow burn in case of a movie where I am investing a couple of hours but you have to move things a bit if you want a much longer time commitment. Those two shows are not really suitable for bingeing, I would have enjoyed it more if I watched them as a weekly show or a season at a time.
