In the rising action of Once, Felix is in an orphanage 3 years after his parents sent him there. He is jewish, but the orphanage is for catholic kids whose parents have died. His secret between the nuns at the orphanage and himself is that his parents are not actually dead, but they were in too much trouble to take care of him. After three years he gets a full carrot in his soup, which he thinks is a sign that his parents are still alive. In the rising action of the story, Felix escapes the orphanage and finds out that the nazis hate jewish book sellers like his mom and dad (that's what he thinks). In the climax of the story, Felix sees that several jewish people are hurt or dead, and Felix realizes that the Nazis hate jews themselves. That is how far I've gotten in the story.
Reaction
As I was reading the book, this part stood out to me: ""Felix," she says "your parent's didn't send the carrot." ... "Sister Elwira put the carrot in your soup ... She did it because she ... well, the truth is she felt sorry for you." ... Mum and Dad aren't coming ... I have to try and find Mum and Dad and tell them what's going on." In this quote, Felix doesn't give up, and this quote is important to the text because it shows the theme : Never Give Up. I think that the author created a very important life lesson. this book teaches people not only to never give up, but to learn from our mistakes in history and make every new generation better.
