Yeah, Im out of Rome and in Paris....

message 52: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) I just made it to p. 300, Chapter 31 - Sinbad the Sailor I think is the title. I hope the Rome part doesn't make me wanna put it down.....

Lori (tnbbc) | 10620 comments Mod
Im just breaking the 600 mark.... Rome isnt all bad, just totally disconnected from the main storyline until things start re-aligning. It helped listening to these guys and gals when the told me to chin-up-and-deal, as now the book is picking up steam and things are really coming together....

message 54: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) I never wouldve believed a book this long could be this action-packed all the way thru.

Im in the mid 600 mark, The "Dapplar Greys" chapter.
Here is where the revenge really begins to come into play, so I see....

((evil rubbing of hands together, with left eyebrow raised))

message 56: by Jon (new)

Jon ooh...revenge revenge love it, ive been slack and have let it slide for a week though, im only on p270 have some catching up to do

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments I may have to re-read this one, y'all are enjoying it so much.

Heh.

pg.667
Chapter 49 - Ideology

Eh??? He is talking to Villiefort about being an agent of God? and of having had a conversation with the Devil and of selling his soul?

What the heck was that all about (I mean, besides trying to scare the crap out of him)

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments The Count's in an ... interesting ... frame of mind, I think.

message 60: by Abbie K. (new)

Abbie K. (brigidshawk) | 108 comments I loved Monte Cristo!!!!
If you get the chance, find the DVD's of Monte Cristo with Gerard Depardieu. It's in French and subtitled, but it is a fantastic version of the story. Long too...two sittings to watch all this, or one VERY long rainy afternoon with a 6 pack of soda and a huge box of popcorn.
You won't be sorry, I promise.

message 61: by Mandy (new)

Mandy I'm up to chapter 76: Progress Cavalcanti the Younger.

Am loving this book and the twists it takes. For such a large book to keep entertained I say Dumas is a master.

One question, the Countess G_________ - do we end up getting her name or is this done on purpose because of how things were written in that day and she was perhaps someone known?

not sure if youre reading the penguin classic, but its says who she is in the notes at the back, or who shes beleived to be, perhaps she was still living so name was protected, shes supposed to be Lord Byrons lover.

I just got to p 396 of my unabridged, just had the gruesome execution chapter

message 63: by Mandy (new)

Mandy Thanks, Jon. Alls I know is it's an Adventure Classic, that's it, no notes at the back, nothing else, nada. And yes, I thought it might have been for some such reason.

message 64: by Mandy (new)

Mandy Ah, the end of chapter 92, tears were there beyond my better judgment.

OK, I was away these last three days, but managed to read a little more. I am on the chapter of THE WILL.
I think at this pace, I will NEVER finish the book :(

message 67: by Mandy (new)

Mandy Yes, you will, Lori :)

message 68: by April (new)

April (booksandwine) | 954 comments I just started CoMC today. I have completed the first chapter and am thinking about pacing myself at 100 pages per day, with other books interspersed. Is this a terrible idea, or should I devote all my reading energies to CoMC?

message 69: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10620 comments Mod
Mandy - Have you finished it already?

April, I think 100 pages a day is a great goal. I wish I could devote myself to that, cause then I would get done in 6 more days!

message 70: by Mandy (new)

Mandy Lori, not yet, about 150 pages to go. Should hopefully finish this weekend.

April, 100 pages a day is a great goal. I found it hard to stick to my 50 pages a day.

message 71: by Jon (new)

Jon ive been doing about 100-150p / week leaving time for other reads, im too much of a commitment phobe to devote more!

Lori (tnbbc) | 10620 comments Mod
I was hoping to finish this thing before the end of June, but it doesnt appear that I will.

I cant devote enough time to it to really make a dent. I need to call in sick from work... that might do the trick!

message 73: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10620 comments Mod
Uhm.. yeah, when I was little ... plus, I wouldnt want it as an adult.. I heard its really really bad.

I just want to fake sick. Hee hee

Abbie K. (brigidshawk) | 108 comments Lori, get the "flu". Results are unmistakable and you don't have to go to a doctor to get diagnosis. Poor you...in bed with chicken soup, a couple of good books and ginger ale. We'll send you lots of notes of condolence. :)

Hahaha...
Actually I was just talking to my husband at dinner tonite. I have a wisdom tooth that is giving me nothing but trouble. Its been coming in now for like 2 months and gets very painful.

I may ask to have it pulled, tho that is super painful, if I plan it right, I might be able to get two or three days off of work :)
How sad is that?

That was not in the abridged AT ALL. God, it's driving me crazy just thinking about all I missed! Even on my vacation, I was searching every used book shop for an unabridged version...I think I'm just going to have to break down and buy it new! :)

message 79: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10620 comments Mod
I dont know if you missed much with that part Jessica... It was just really strange and seemed to almost make no sense... perhaps that is why they took it out.

message 80: by Mandy (new)

Mandy I finished this one a couple of days ago.....BRILLIANT! I honestly wouldn't want any part taken out and would feel crazy as well, Jessica, if I had to read the abridged version.

** page 1084, The Accusation****
Not really a spoiler!

Am I the only one left reading it here? (Sniff sniff)

I went to a Yankees game last nite (first time at the new stadium)... and since Im not a big fan of baseball, I brought my book! I managed to get about a hundred pages the whole day, and finally believe I will get this novel finished before I die :)

I like how it not only focuses on Dante and his revenge, but also becomes a sort of whodunit novel too! The great part is that since the book is so big, and there are so many interwoven characters that are here now, and then not mentioned again for 400 pages, that you actually begin losing track of who is who and who did what and who knows what... so that when these whodunit parts come up, I'm clueless, and that's kinda fun :)

message 83: by April (new)

April (booksandwine) | 954 comments Lori, I am still reading it. I'm at page 242, I'm enjoying it but not making it as big of a priority as I should.

Susanna - Censored by GoodReads (susannag) | 1736 comments That's a great idea, Lori!

I almost set up to reread this one, but I'm about to gird my loins and try Gone With the Wind for another group's group read. And Mt. TBR couldn't hold them both!

Whoo hoo... I am only about 100 pages from completing this book! I hope to finish tonite, but I dont know. I have work today, then I come home and pack pack pack.. we are heading out to Inner Harbor Baltimore for the 4th weekend.... And I wont be back till Tuesday nite.

SO if I dont finish it tonite, I should be able to knock it out on the car ride out there tomorrow...

Its been speeding past now that all the plot lines are liniing up!

message 87: by Lisa (new)

Lisa | 69 comments My neighborhood book club has selected this book (unabridged) and we'll be reading this in about five months. Can any suggest a good translation? Are there major differences between any of them?

Wish this discussion was about 6 months in the future - would love to join! Just didn't have the time right now for one this size! I've tried not to read any of the potential spoilers here. :)

message 88: by April (new)

April (booksandwine) | 954 comments I suggest the Penguin classics translated by Robin Buss.

Lori (tnbbc) | 10620 comments Mod
Phew!
I managed to finish this book on my vacation this past week. It was sooo worth the month it took me to read it. Depsite the few dull parts, it was very fast paced, and action packed! A gigantic novel about slow revenge..... whoo hoo!

message 91: by Sherry (new)

Sherry Finished myself today and these last few days I've been pretty much glued to the pages and all the Count's various plots coming together.

Now I better understand the saying 'revenge is a dish best served cold'.

message 92: by JSou (new)

JSou I've been wondering, in the unabridged version, does it kind of explain more about Haydee? In the abridged version, it only mentions her vaguely before the chapter, "Haydee's Story", which was only a few pages long.

I know she comes back in the end, but she was a very interesting character for me, and was wanting to know the other version gave more insight to her.

message 93: by April (new)

April (booksandwine) | 954 comments Jessica, the unabridged version explains quite a bit about Haydee, two whole chapters are devoted solely to her. The unabridged gives her backstory, how she came to be with Dantes, how her father was betrayed.

message 94: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10620 comments Mod
Jessica, funny that you wanted more of Haydee. I could have handled a little less to be honest, but I understand why Dumas had to go so deep into her backstory.

We had a whole chapter that actually has her recounting her memories of the day/night her family was broken apart and father betrayed (as April stated) and how she came to be owned by the Count.

message 95: by Amy (new)

Amy (signgirlamy) | 32 comments I finished this book about 2 weeks ago, and really enjoyed. Wish I had known about this post earlier to join in on the conversations.

Amy, Im sorry you missed the fun of discussing as you go, but if there is something you want to talk about now, we would be more than happy to relive it all for you :)

message 97: by Jon (new)

Jon dont worry Amy some of us are still ploughing through p 780 here and loving every minute of retribution!

message 98: by Amy (new)

Amy (signgirlamy) | 32 comments Glad to see there's still people talking about it :) I thought the ending was a little "down". It was nothing like he ending in the most recent movie. I'm not always big on the dramatic Hollywood ending, but I thought Dumas' ending was a bit anticlimatic for such a long book

message 99: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10620 comments Mod
I havent seen any of the film versions. But I kinda thought the ending in the book was fitting.

******Spoilers for the ending*******
