The professional witnesses are an element of Heinlein's Stranger in a Strange Land Stranger in a Strange Land (in this book they are called "Fair Witnesses"); the book also includes frequent use of the word "discorporate" (to mean "die"). There's no time travel, though.
Thanks so much. That looks like the book. I read it 15 years ago and remember it being good but could never remember the name. I'm looking forward to reading it again!
