What is the book title?

I am looking for a book I don't remember the title and author.

A guy goes to a rural area around New York city for what reason I don't remember (maybe a writer). It seems to be a very conservative society, where people hate city life and don't use electricity (propane tanks). They do follow some old ceremonies, which are pagan in nature (that they are not aware of). A monster is awaken in the middle of the forest on an inauspicious night and our hero is involved. Any guesses please. Thanks.

I would say its The Tommy knockers but it takes place in Maine, they use battery's for appliances and the monster in the forest would have been a spaceship. The main character was a writer though and he went because he sensed one of his friends was in danger or something like that. Hope that helps.
