A journalist by profession he tried his hand first in poetry and published a book of poems Janaki (firefly) with Bishnupada Bhattacharya and Narayan Gangopadhyay. An author of about fifty short collections he earned readers’ love and appreciation for his novels life Dvippunja Chenamahal Suryamukhi. A few of his short stories were made into film by Satyajit Ray, Rajen Tarafdar and others.
