BBC to Reveal a Number of Missing Doctor Who Episodes

I'd heard the rumors, of course, but this seems legit. What do you folks think?

message 2: by Robert (new)

Robert Wright (rhwright) | 74 comments I would be gobsmacked if they found all the missing episodes. But even a few is a good thing.

Personally, I found the "pre-news" a little annoying. Here's an announcement to say we will have an importation announcement later this week. This is not a breaking, critical story. It could have just been announced when they actually have something to say.

Don't tease us, BBC.

Too true.

Wow. If that bears out after the announcement, just ...Wow.

Andrew | 25 comments Yeah I heard that they didn't find them all, I really doubt that would ever happen. But I mean jesus, the thought of Web of Fear, Evil of the Daleks and Fury From the Deep episodes is enough to make my fanboy-jizz go everywhere.

message 6: by Matthew (new)

Matthew Kresal | 119 comments I doubt the 106 figure (Daleks Masterplan and its prelude episode weren't sold overseas) but the fact we're apparently getting a sizeable number of episodes returned, enough to apparently warrant a press conference, is enough to be exciting!

Ivan | 31 comments Oh man, I really hope this is true. If it turns out to be an elaborate prank I am going to rage.

Debra Watling and Frazer Hines will be on hand for the broadcast tomorrow (Thursday) October 10.

Robert Wright (rhwright) | 74 comments Rumors seem to be that the first to release will be Web of Fear and Enemy of the World.

Will be sad if (as in some rumors) it is an iTunes-only digital release.

BBC seems to be refusing to confirm # of episodes, though rumor is ~90-100. Nothing solid on if they were all missing ones or if there was substantial overlap with existing material.

Interesting article: http://www.radiotimes.com/news/2013-1...

I hope one is the Web of Fear. Other stories I would most like to see completed:

Dalek's Master Plan (well, any Dalek story)
Abominable Snowmen
Fury from the Deep
Highlanders (I love good historical)
Wheel in Space (Zoe's a favorite of mine)

DMP is unlikely, as every source I've ever seen seems to think it was never sold abroad, other than the Xmas episode. But I can dream.

I know somewhere I saw it discussed what episodes were sold where, but for the life of me I can't find the reference now.

And as much as I like the animated "restorations," all originals for those stories would be great too.

message 10: by Andrew (new)

Andrew | 25 comments Man, if they found the remaining Dalek's Master Plan episodes that would be a goldmine considering only I think 2 out of a wopping 12 still exist.

And I really hope it's not just an iTunes release. Please BBC, put them on DVD for us all!

And miss out on a potential source of income?! They'd be nuts if it is just iTunes (with which I have a serious beef right now).

message 12: by Andrew (new)

Andrew | 25 comments Yeah I really hope they don't. If they do I'm going to have to go to BBC Broadcasting House personally and punch the building repeatedly until it collapses.

Andrew | 25 comments Cheers.

Robert Wright (rhwright) | 74 comments Author Lance Parkin (who freely admits he was not at the press conference) seems to concur with the social media scuttlebutt that it is Enemy of the World & 4/5 of the missing Web of Fear episodes, and possibly more "on the way." https://www.facebook.com/lance.parkin

Guess we just have to wait until the official media blackout is lifted at midnight GMT.

Andrew | 25 comments Well, not quite 109, but who cares! Web of Fear and Enemy of the world! Squeeee!

Indeed. I think the original rumour said 90 had been found. I suspect, as with most rumours, that the true figure (nine) was exaggerated to 90 as the rumour spread.

But 9 is still an incredible find considering how old these episodes are. In fact, we've had 11 returned within the past 2 years or so which is very impressive considering that, in the 20 years prior to 2011, there were only six episodes found. It's make me hopeful that there's still more to be found.

I haven't seen Web or Enemy yet as I want to get them or DVD and can't afford paying for them twice. I'm especially looking forward to Web of Fear as it's been a favourite of mine since I read the novelisation.

Andrew | 25 comments "I think the original rumour said 90 had been found. I suspect, as with most rumours, that the true figure (nine) was exaggerated to 90 as the rumour spread."

Yeah that sounds about right. Rumours do tend to spread like that.

I find it an amazing haul simply because we got a complete 5-episode story and 5 out of 6 of the other story. Normally we find one out of 5 episodes or something. But we to find nine. Freakin' nine. The last time something this good happened was like, finding the completed Tomb of the Cybermen in the 90s? It's a great find.

message 19: by Mark (new)

Mark C | 43 comments You're right, Tomb was the last complete find so to have near-enough two more complete stories return now is quite something.

I have to say that Troughton is not one of my favourite Doctors and a lot of that might be down to the fact that so little of his episodes exist. Now that we've had these 9 returned I'm looking forward to being able to re-evaluate his era.

message 20: by Andrew (new)

Andrew | 25 comments Well, I found that I could like Troughton from the episodes that did exist, but I can see your point.

I'm glad their from what is generally considered his best season. If it had been the Space Pirates or something, I would have been a bit disappointed. I would it if Fury of From the Deep or Evil of the Daleks turned up next, but that's wishful thinking really.

I always thought the Macra Terror would be a good find just because of how little of it exists. There's the soundtrack and a couple of stills, but alot of it is generally ambiguous.

message 21: by Andrew (new)

Andrew | 25 comments Ahh, just to think that at one point these were only surviving clips of the Web of Fear. Ahh, the old days. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4g2JtM...

message 22: by Ivan (new)

Ivan | 31 comments Troughton is one of my favorite Doctors and I could not possibly be more stoked about this. I've wanted to see The Enemy of the World ever since I first heard about it, and now I'll finally get a chance. Having so much of the story that immediately follows is even better. I'm a happy guy!
