Caroline Jackson Whoa. Wasn't expecting that. Not at all. But we know that Jason and Nico went on a quest for the scepter, at least.

By the way, adding 'spoiler' and 'don't read' makes people read it.

in the United states we have to also.

FallingAngels Did you get the name Booklion from Christine?

Georgia I suspected from the second book with Nico in it, but to actually have it announced...

C.R. I actually don't like it... Um i'm sorry but I don't like that idea at all... I know that he's trying to appeal to everyone but really... in a kid's book? Gosh my ten year old little sister is reading this. She's gonna be confused and my mom's gonna get mad... great...

Heavs I was a little unsure how it was going to play out when I read the original spoiler, but it worked for me. Nico's attitude and determined self isolation from the camp even after TLO and his issues with Percy make a lot of sense.

As for it being a children's book? I didn't think it was inappropriate. No one would bat and eye lid if he'd confirmed his crush on Annabeth and it was played exactly the same as if a straight person got a hopeless crush one of the other heroes. I think a lot of kids these days can handle knowing gay kids exist more than adults do sometimes.

Rasika Probably, i'm the only one, but i simply LOVE this twist! I had always thought that Nico was a bit creepy, but knowing that he was gay and liked Percy, suddenly I like him so much! It just explains everything! Poor guy! It would have been so horrid for him, thinking that he will never ever get accepted - a kid from past, child of hades and on top of that he is gay. Our awesome heroes wont mind(I'm guessing) but he doesn't know that.
I so hope that when percy get to know this, he will let him down gently. But I'm really looking forward for that conversation.(hope annabeth doesn't get upset or something!)

Jeff I wasn't exactly surprised when I read it, but I enjoyed the way RR put it together, and I liked the way Jason handled the situation.

And now, Nico will go from being hated as the little creepy weirdo to being the poor little infatuated dude.

Don't get me wrong, Nico's attitude was awesome, and the way he overcame Cupid was incredible. It just makes me kinda annoyed at how now people will pity him just for being gay.

I mean, most people didn't like him at all, I'm probably one of the few who ever liked him as a character, and now that he's less mysterious, it made me like him even more, and the fact that we now have more insight on his personality makes me think that him being gay is irrelevant... except for Percy's friendship with him, of course.

Edited: Minor grammar mistakes. (Not my native language. :X)

Raven OMG I have never been taken so off guard in a book! I cant it over it. I'm just a little sad because I had a MAJOR character crush- at least i know how hes feeling

Raven I do think it was really cool of Mr. Riordan to write that it was assimilated flawlessly. Kind of an eyeopener. A lot of the series readers are growing up- though their are new ones. Im 16 and this is a relevant- applicable to life- situation.

Well, at least everyone that I know (IRL or otherwise) has always stated that they dislike Nico. X:

I agree that what he's been through might warrant people's pity, but that's NOT a helpful feeling at all... it kind of disgusts me, to be honest. I'd rather commend him for being brave and for, despite everything that he's being through, still care and help his friends.

The strange thing is that most of the time, either we have people who hate homossexuals or pity them. I'm neither, I'd rather ignore it and concentrate on what defines a person's character, that's what I meant by saying people don't like him. :)

Blogger Girl wow. I can't wait to read this BOOK!!!!!i never hated nico but i did think he was creepy/mysterious....and still do but i like how Riordan made a twist so it's more......like in today's world i guess

Lexie Booklion wrote: "I loved how Jason reacted. This was one of those rare moments that I actually liked Jason. He was so supportive and understanding."

Yeah... Jason was never my favorite. But I did like how supportive.

It explains Nico's characters, and I now feel soory for him, not because he is gay, but how it makes him feel like he has to cut himself off.

I REALLY want to see Percy's reaction to the news.

Ariel Anissa wrote: "Yeah I agree, I think it's good to let kids know about the gays because what if THEY turn out to be gay? I like this twist and I haven't got my hands on the book yet but I want it NOW!"

Exactly! I love how Riordan does that! He also does it with kids who have things like ADHD or dyslexia… I love how he not only delivers a great action story, but also includes encouragement like that! He's always writing about the outcasts finding their place and finding out that they aren't really outcasts at all. This is why Rick Riordan is one of my heroes!

Rachel W i absolutely love nico. he is my favorite character and has been since he was introduced in the titan's curse. Him being gay changed absolutely NOTHING. hes still a really awesome guy, no matter what way you look at (in my opinion) and nothing is going to change that for me. it did give a reason to his moodiness around some of the other characters, and that helped. say what you want, but i like it.

also, i have openly hated Jason since the lost hero, and this is one of the first time i can honestly say that i think some of his douchyness was lost. that was a bonus.

Ariel Nico now makes so much more sense! And yes, Jason's response was awesome. That's exactly how he should have responded. I'm just in suspense now for when the rest of the demigods find out!

■©atherine■ NICO! I was just screaming. Totally speechless. I really respect Rick for writing it. Nico has always been my favorite character anyway. I love him more now.

No offense Piper. But I was having so much fun picturing Nico and Jason hugging each other. They would make a cute couple. Forgive me guys.

message 21: by Camille (last edited Oct 10, 2013 08:21AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Camille Reyes Don't get mad at me for saying this..

Nico's my favorite character in the series. He's kind of annoying when we met him and geeky (I like this part of him) but when Bianca died, we know what happened then.. He became the Ghost King (PJO, bk 4)
I salute Rick for creating characters with so much depth and I understand Nico then, and continue to root for him.
All the pain he's going through, he has no one to rely on, except the dead.. He hated Percy, Hades and maybe, Bianca for leaving him all alone. He's just 13, correct me if I'm wrong, and he has to suffer more..
Lost and confused, Only Percy took notice of him, since he was his first real hero. Maybe it's just me, just like he said "he has no choice but to fall for him".. Countless times that Percy saved him from his "not so planned" actions, especially when he betrayed him. So, he couldn't stop owing him his life.

SO my guess is that, he's not yet "completely" gay, but on the verge of being one.. No girl really paid him "extra" attention (if you know what I mean) and he's not the talkative type *cough* Leo *cough* (I also love Leo by the way)
Being the son of Hades, even the demigods feared him.. I mean look at the way Frank, Leo or Jason described how he's creepy and isolated.
So after the war, he ran away when he always saw Percabeth and couldn't understand what he felt by then.
So, when Percy disappeared and, he find his way to camp Jupiter.. and Hazel happened, he has someone to confide with again (only as his sister). The pain he felt just grew when Percy lost his memory and he couldn't meddle with Hera's plan, so he left again after their quest started.. To help Percy again, and with this in mind, he was captured.. (Tartarus made him more lost)
While in prison, he thought that Percy will not come for him, but he did..
And so, he was saved again and the price is, Percy and Annabeth fell in the Tartarus. And he promised him to get to the doors of death. Of course, he succeeded..
I know you've read the Cupid parts and Jason's POV.
The future waiting for him, he thought, was death. It's really disturbing and depressing to know that a son of Hades wanted to die.. He's just waiting for the opportunity (just like fighting the giant and the sorceress or he'll probably volunteer to close the doors of death) but we saw how he's somewhat disappointed that he didn't die.

And another opportunity came, getting the statue back to the camp.. So we'll see how it would work out for him, unfortunately, next year.. I'm just guessing we will have this debate for a long time.

I felt what he had gone through, his hardships, especially being different from everybody else.
We all feel alone in this world some time and the difference is that Nico had no one to really talk to.
His courage really inspired me and I'm just so proud him..

This is my big question!
Nico and Reyna, is she the one? we'll see then. If Uncle Rick's gonna do it, that's a big IF, and we saw how fun Leo and Calypso turned out :)
Both (Nico and Reyna) that's broken, haunted by their past and clinging to someone they can never be with..
I'll just leave it to you then.

This is all I have to say about Nico. And honestly, I cried when Jason is having flashbacks about his life and their conversation about "coming out of the shadows".. And I rarely display my emotions while reading. Sorry that this is super long. Well, Kudos to Uncle Rick! It's gonna a long year..

The term is bisexual.
Yes, I have finished the book.
Why do you say that he's bisexual? I don't ever remember him saying that he liked girls. He just said that he had a crush on Percy, indicating that he likes guys.

Ariel Rachel wrote: "i did. it was AMAZING!"

YES. IT'S AMAZING BY THE WAY!!!!!!!!!!

Rachel W yeah, im not so sure on the bisexual theory either. throughout the series, up until then, he seemed to be almost asexual (neither). but then came along THAT little scene...

Yeah...

Ramona there's this theory going around [from what i've read of tumblr posts] that since Nico got hit with Cupid arrow he'll start to fall for Jason as he was the first person Nico saw, thoughts anyone? And what about what Favonius said. "The one you care for most... Plunged into Tartarus?" Someone? Anyone?

message 29: by Rachel (last edited Oct 10, 2013 04:26PM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Rachel W where the heck did you hear that from? its so wrong.
ok, they do meet cupid, but no one is shot, nico is already in love with percy and expresses no emotional attachment to jason. the person nico cares for most is percy.

Hannah Cook I was suprised, but I think Rick handled the writing of it well. He didn't make a big deal about it. The whole big scene took like a page. I do wonder how the younger readers will handle it though...

Sevania My heart just breaks for Nico. As for younger kids - my little sister's eleven, and though she doesn't read these books, I would be completely fine with her reading this. In fact, it's something kids need to know. And I absolutely loved the way Riordan brought it in. Nico is someone we've all known for a while, and he had his whole story and everything someone might relate to before it was revealed he was gay.

Anyway, with all that said, things aren't looking to good for him. The fact that he's basically emotionally traumatized and that Percy has Annabeth... It's going to take a lot for Nico to come out to everyone. It might not end up happening.

Thanks :) It's my first time joining discussions and I needed to say those things. It's just my insight on him. Let's just all wait for the last book though...
I also love how Rick wrote Leo and Calypso's chapters, i'm awestruck and enchanted!

message 33: by Aurora (last edited Oct 11, 2013 10:18AM) (new) - rated it 5 stars

Aurora Initially, I was unsure of what to make of the fact that Nico had romantic feelings for Percy. I don't disapprove just because of the fact that there's a guy with feelings for another guy. (I mean, come on. Greek mythology is full of it.) Just, I felt that it seemed...out of character for Nico too have romantic feelings for anyone, let alone Percy. He seems to much like a loner to me.

The more I thought about it, though, the more I found that it fit with what I know about Nico. Like in the memories Jason saw, the first time Nico met Percy was when Percy saved his and Bianca's life. I think that's pretty huge. Nico never really had anyone in his life to look to other than Bianca, and not a male figure. Then, this teenager who pretty much embodies everything Nico was interested in and admired - everything from Mythomagic - comes and rescues him and the one person he cares about. I can see how Nico would come to view Percy as someone to admire and look up to. Then, there's the part about Percy promising to protect Bianca, and that failing, and so Nico's absolutely crushed that his hero failed him so completely. Nico just loses everyone in his life that he cared about, so he isolates himself to protect himself.

Then, over the next several years, Percy again and again saves Nico's life. I can see how, from there, Nico could develop a crush on Percy.

Now, I'm hesitant to say that Nico is gay, because that implies homosexuality. To me, that seems really out of character for Nico. I'm not sure that he would be physically attracted to Percy. I think it would more along the lines of a homoromantic situation. But even then, I'm not that would be the case for Nico.

Regardless of the exact details, I hope that Rick Riordan concludes that plot line. It breaks my heart so see Nico so defeated and wanting to isolate himself. He shouldn't do that. Even if he is a son of Hades, there are people who care about him. I think it's good that he has Hazel as a sibling, and that Jason knows his secret. I'm interested to see how this particular plot line is resolved.

Rachel W Aurora wrote: "Initially, I was unsure of what to make of the fact that Nico had romantic feelings for Percy. I don't disapprove just because of the fact that there's a guy with feelings for another guy. (I mean,..."

i think you just summed up what everyone was thinking, but explained it a hell of f lot better than we could. thx

Camille Reyes Aurora wrote: "Initially, I was unsure of what to make of the fact that Nico had romantic feelings for Percy. I don't disapprove just because of the fact that there's a guy with feelings for another guy. (I mean,..."

Couldn't agree more.. *clapping hard*

Ariel XD Very nice explanation!

Ramona Anissa wrote: "omg has anyone actually READ the House of Hades??"

Ramona Rachel wrote: "where the heck did you hear that from? its so wrong.

no it happened. p287 paragraph 3, "The thrid arrow zipped by Jason's shoulder. He couldn't stop it in time. Nico gasped as it sunk into his sword arm."

But that's not exactly important, the arrow might've not been a 'love' arrow [is there such thing?]. But it's just a theory and the amount of Jasper in this book kind scared me, everything's a bit of. But even thought it did happened, Cupid did say Jason has already found true love, so chances are it won't.

Amber I was very shocked but I also appreciated that Rick Riordan brought such a controversial topic into the book. Does anyone else think that Percy is going to find out in Book 5? And does anyone know the name of book 5?

Ramona Amber wrote: "I was very shocked but I also appreciated that Rick Riordan brought such a controversial topic into the book. Does anyone else think that Percy is going to find out in Book 5? And does anyone kno..."

The name of book five is The Blood of Olympus, sends shivers down your spine doesn't it? And yeah, i do think Percy and the other members of the seven will find out. Or at least I hope so!

Then you should NOT read this discussion... really. :)

Halie wrote: "Why Nico why. Nooooo I loved u."
Really, what's wrong with him being gay?

And anyways, for those of you saying that he might not be gay, he actually STATES that he's had a "crush" on Percy for a long time now. I believe that's really a moot point by now. In my opinion, he's gay whether we accept it or not.

Also, this theory of Nico falling for Jason is flawed because I wouldn't think Riordan would make such a plot twist with another heterossexual character and Nico. I mean that would be simply horrible for Nico.

And the theory about him and Reyna... well, that one is acceptable, since both of them were disappointed in their "crush", they might find some sort of attachment to each other since both had similar experience and feelings... but that might be a long shot for Nico, i think. It's wait and see, I guess. =/

Also, do any of you think that Octavian might be gay and his bitter attitude is based on infatuation towards Jason? I've noticed he's very partial to Jason all the time, which made me wonder...
Anyways, that's just for the sake of debating with you guys. :)

Yes, I've been thinking about Octavian for a while now... his bitter behavior is really annoying, but there's gotta be something more to it than just Roman/Greek disagreements. But like I said, it's just a theory. :P
