Which LIST book did you just finish?
The Player of Games by Iain M.Banks. Overall I found this a well written and engaging story, that despite its rather abrupt ending, kept me engrossed.
The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery. I thought it was pretty pretentious but I still gave it four stars because of the end.
Wise Blood. Two stars.I'll take an Elizabeth Taylor (a contemporary of Flannery O'Connor) novel over something like this any day.
The Waves by Virginia Woolf. It's on the list of shorter books to read but that didn't mean it's easy to read. An amazing book but one of the hardest that I've read so far... ! (for me anyway)
Siddartha by Herman Hesse - I really enjoyed it! Am happy with where this list is taking me so far ^__^

There are several short books which take a very long time to read! Avoid for now anything by Samuel Beckett (except Worstward Ho -- it's short and you will see why you want to postpone Beckett for now), and Thomas Bernhard (except Wittgenstein's Nephew which is different than the other 5 books on the list). I like Bernhard, but his books are best read in chronological order; I never developed a taste for Beckett.

Finished Pavlos Matesis's The Daughter (can't find link under the title). Novel about a Greek woman growing up in WW2 and a little of her later life. Unreliable narrator, got weirder toward the end.

It helped me to listen to an audio of The Waves while reading the text, pausing when needed. Not for Woolf beginners.

Irving was a big favorite of mine about 20 yr ago and I read & enjoyed his 3 list books then, and others.

I finished:Midaq Alley by Naguib Mahfouz
The Time Machine by H.G. Wells - Hated it
The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde by Robert Louis Stevenson
Cheese by Willem Elsschot
Finished The Child in Time by Ian McEwan and I did not enjoy it at all. I will not going into those particular reasons but I will say he seems obsessed with caste and hates poor/homeless people
Diane wrote: "Finished The Virgin in the Garden by A.S. Byatt."I heard an abridgement/drama of that on Radio 4. Sounds like a good story.

Excellent dystopian sci-fi novel depicting life in a 26th century totalitarian state. We was one of the first books banned by the Soviet censorship bureau in 1921, and the book was not published in Russia in Russian until 1988. Luckily, the book was smuggled out of Russia for publication in the West.
