Stacy Arnett | 1 comments The book I am looking for had a pink hardback cover with either black or gold lettering on the spine. It was a collection of short stories by various authors. I remember some details from a couple of the stories I read but I only read the first few when visiting my aunt and never got to finish the book. One story was about a man (I think) who could hear plants crying in pain when being clipped or grass mowed. The other story I have a vague recollection of was about a brother and sister who visited neighbors and there was something about a cake with a sled. The sled had figurines that looked like the brother and sister. The sled began its way down the cake and the children realized if they didn't leave before the sled reached the bottom of the cake the would not be allowed to go home. There was also a story about a man who had been burned or buried and came back and terrorized his wife or something about a bride. All of these stories would have been towards the front of the book.

Stacy, do you remember if the stories were by the same author or multiple authors?

Was the collection more horror stories, scifi stories, or something else?

Also, you may want to add a few more details to your post's title. You'll catch a few more eyes. Something like: "70s [genre] short stories, pink cover."

stormhawk | 183 comments It sounds like an Alfred Hitchcock short story collection. He didn't write the stories. I read many of them ... the one about the plants is be Roald Dahl. It's called the sound machine.

Here is a list of books the story is reprinted in

http://www.roalddahlfans.com/shortsto...

So it could be a Hitchcock collection or a roald dahl collection.

stormhawk | 183 comments those lurid cover colors were unfortunately common for book club editions ... which is where I got at least two of my Hitchcock collections. (Stories to be Read with the Lights On was one)

Carol (octaviapratt) | 1 comments The second story is almost certainly "The white haired Children" in the collection The Phantom Cyclist and other ghost stories by Ruth Ainsworth.

Stacy, are you still looking for this or did you find it?

Rainbowheart | 28726 comments That second story is definitely "The White Haired Children," but I can't find any edition of The Phantom Cyclist with a pink cover. It also appeared in Over The Rainbow, but that has a red cover and wasn't pubbed until the '80s anyhow.
