Usually I try to persist, at least until the 100 page mark. Although I could only manage about 30 pages of Astonishing the Gods before I wanted to crawl into a hole and cry.
I try to read all books to the end, glass half full thing hoping it gets better lol! But some books I've had to give up on, no matter how hard I tried.
I give up on more books than I care to admit but have to read at least 50 pages first. The majority of my throw-aways have writings style that just doesn't flow for me as opposed to boring stories because, with those, you can hope for a turn around whereas writing style's not likely to change within a book. And I will not give a star rating unless I've finished at least half the book.
Currently reading a book that is making me want to stamp on it. It's about Moany McMoans of Moanington Finding it painful to get to 100 pages and I find myself muttering 'oh do &@*# iff' at when I'm reading it.
I feel that if you're swearing at a book it's probably best to give up!

One Hundred Years of Solitude is much worse Matt.

Gave up recently (after 200+ pages) of The Marriage Plot I think that was a fair go at it, I just hated every character. I had really liked the Virgin Suicides, (if you can like a book like that) so was disappointed but this one.
It's gone back into the library book bag. (I'm on the app and can't figure out how I link a book here)The next one will hopefully be better
I started reading Room by Emma Donoghue and gave up after 35 pages. To be honest, I'm only a teen and the novel wasn't for the teen audience. I had trouble trying to make sense about what was happening and what the general plot was. I normally never give up reading a story, even if it isn't for me. But this one was simply too complex. Maybe when I'm a little bit older, I may try it again.
I very rarely give up on books - I'm a stubborn individual. I loved The Luminaries. I did make it to the end of Hundred Years of Solitude - admired the skill of the writing rather than loving it.The book I had to given up on though was Gormenghast. I know a lot of people love it, but I just found it so grim and depressing. Just not for me.
