Carolyn F. You'll love them.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) I liked Moon Called. I really liked Mercy Thompson. She is a real macho chick.

She almost reminds me of a suttle Anita Blake but I love Mercy Thompson soooooo much!! I can't wait for the new book Sliver Borne!!!

message 54: by Lynn (new)

Lynn | 12 comments I am reading the Weather Warden series right now and I think it is pretty good.

I know it is kind of young, but a really quick read the Morganville Vampires was pretty good too, also by Rachel Caine.

message 55: by Rachael (new)

Rachael (raybay) | 7 comments I've read all four Mercy Thompson books that have been released, have enjoyed them (by Patricia Briggs). Even though its not mainly about vamps, they are in there & the books are really good.

Also enjoyed reading Anita Blake books by Laurell K Hamilton & am waiting for the latest book to be released. have only just started reading her Merry Gentry series, but so far so good.

Have started reading Keri Arthurs books, haven't seen anyone mention them just yet, they are the Riley Jensen Guardian series. Have read the first two and am enjoying them so far. Also helps that the author is an aussie like me and they are based where i currently live, which makes it more enjoayble.

Mortal Instruments by Cassie Claire were also good. maybe a little teenager but still a good read.

message 56: by Starling (new)

Starling I've started the following series recently. In each case I bought the first book and have either bought the next couple or am waiting for the next one to come out. Basically this is a "if you like this, you might want to try that" list.

Tempest Rising (Jane True, #1) by Nicole Peeler She is basically a mermaid, and it is the oddest paranormal universe I've ever read about, but I liked it a lot. The second one is on my to buy list.

Soulless (The Parasol Protectorate, #1) by Gail Carriger This is paranormal steamboat punk. Don't expect normal UF or PNR. This is science fiction based urban fantasy set in an alternate 19th Century. The second one is on my to buy list.

Greywalker (Greywalker, #1) by Kat Richardson She gets attacked and starts seeing another world, and unlike most people who can see it, she also can enter it. The first book is about dealing with the fact that something has changed. I bought two more in the series. Have not read them yet.

The Becoming (Anna Strong, #1) by Jeanne C. Stein All about what happens when one particular woman becomes a vampire. I've bought the next two books but have not read them yet.

Years ago I found that a great number of women who read certain authors that I liked were also reading a bunch of other authors I was reading in other genres. It would be interesting to see what non-paranormal books all of us like.

message 57: by Kandice (new)

Kandice I just read Soulless and absolutely LOVED it! I may end up buying these.

message 58: by Starling (new)

Starling Kandice wrote: "I just read Soulless and absolutely LOVED it! I may end up buying these."

I think the people who don't love it also don't "get it"; they were expecting something else.

There are two groups of writers who are writing what is being called "urban fantasy." The older group started out writing science fiction. The newer one started out writing romance novels.

Soulless belongs to the SF group, even if it has both a romance and a HEA. It doesn't follow all of the romantic vampire conventions. That is one of the things I LIKE about it.

message 59: by Kate (new)

Kate (kshiv) | 51 comments I am a huge Sookie fan and read the Black Dagger Brotherhood books to fill the space between books. They are good in a different, umm, sexier? way. They might make Sookie blush.
As far as straight thriller, mysteries go I love the Agent Pendergast books by Douglas Preston and Lincoln Child. They are scary and fast moving and not predictable.

message 60: by Susie (new)

Susie | 10 comments I too read the Black Dagger Brotherhood. The series got rather repetitive. Same plot line with different characters (one book for each of the brotherhood).
I would recommend the Night Huntress novels. The Night Huntress novels were rather good. I think that there are four in the series right now with a fifth to make an appearance this year.

message 61: by Lauren (new)

Lauren I also really like Sarah Addison Allen- she writes shorter, individual stories that have a taste of magical realism. A girl that moves in with her uncle who is a giant and the wallpaper changes based on her mood, a woman who's apple tree throws apples at you and will tell your future, a girl who has an affinity for sweets- they are:

Garden Spells
The Sugar Queen
The Girl Who Chased the Moon

They are all primarily romance based and super easy reads but very entertaining. They all leave you feeling really happy and have that slight twist of magic to them that makes them really enjoyable.

message 62: by Lauren (new)

Lauren Also if you're someone like me who BLOWS through books in a sitting you might want to try Diana Gabaldon's Outlander series- they are VERY detailed and long (one book is the equivalent of 3 I would say) but absolutely worth it. It's about an english woman in Scotland in 1943 who accidentally travels back 200 years. Its romance/adventure and SO good. The first book Outlander takes about 50 pages to get into because of the back detail but I highly recommend it.

If you're looking for something more Sookie like you can try Chloe Neill's Chicagoland Vampire series. The first one is Friday Night Bites- there's 2 out now (the 3rd comes out in July) but this series has a lot of potential.

message 63: by Jessie (new)

Jessie | 142 comments Here are a couple of my favorite UFs:

A Rush of Wings (The Maker's Song, #1) by Adrian Phoenix
Halfway to the Grave (Night Huntress, #1) by Jeaniene Frost

message 64: by Starling (new)

Starling Lauren, actually the year is 1945 or 1946, because she is at loose ends because the war is over and she needs to figure out what to do next with her life. She did nursing during the War under the British system which did not involve going to nursing school, but was totally hands on apprenticeship.

So her questions include should she marry her young man or go to school (couldn't do both at the same time in 1945). That isn't a spoiler because you find it out in the first couple of pages.

message 65: by Jessica B (new)

Jessica B | 3 comments I've seen alot of posts for Richelle Mead's Georgina Kincaid and Vampire Academy series. But have not seen her Dark Swan series mentioned. The two books available are:
Storm Born and Thorn Queen

with a third installment set to be realeased in Jan. 2011.

They were great reads and I can't wait to get into the next one!!

Actually the first Chloe Neill book is Some Girls Bite. I really enjoyed it, and will read the second book at some point.

I don't think anyone has mentioned this yet, but the Fever series by Karen Marie Moning are really good. I don't like the main character nearly as much as Sookie but there is violence, romance, paranormal stuff, and Mac (the main character) is pretty kick ass. The first book in that series is Darkfever

Jessa ♥ EvilDarkSide (metalgirl80) Amy, I agree with the Fever series. Love Barrons even when he is being a butthead. :-)

message 68: by Lauren (new)

Evelyn Amaro (paromantasy) | 11 comments Some of my fave's are:
Mercy Thompson by Patricia Briggs
Both the Vampire Academy and Dark Swan series by Richelle Mead
Black Dagger Brotherhood series by JR Ward
Evernight series
Morganville Vampires (starts off a little slow, but gets better)
Mortal Instruments - Cassandra Clare
Hunger Games - Suzanne Collins

Just to name a few ;-)

message 71: by Shante (new)

Shante (artsyafwife) | 4 comments I absolutely love Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy.
I like Mark Janice Davidson's books as well. She uses more...colorful language and her books read east but they aren't as well developed as the Sookie books.
I am trying to get into the Stephanie Plum books but I can't seem to make it past the first couple of chapters.

message 72: by Jesika (new)

Jesika | 10 comments I agree with you on the Vampire Academy series :) Most amazing books ever written. Not even just that, its the most amazing PLOT ever written. I just love the whole story and all the characters :)

message 73: by Kenna (new)

Kenna (kennas) Ive started reading the Morgan Kingsley series by Jenna Black and I LOVE them!!!!

Take what I would assume to be a dark haired version of Eric...but in (a kind, not evil)demon-king form and put him in your head to play (because you were accidentally possessed by him)and throw in some hot gay SnM loving demons and a bit of a straight hot boyfriend....You know what, its a good read. Hot Quick and nasty. Just the way we tend to like them. And it has a bonus of having a great storyline to boot!

Demons (not the spawn of satan type) are allowed to poses humans and turn them into super types doing good deeds and what not as long as the have permission. Rouge demons take over without permission and destroy the host. Morgan is an exercist and goes after the bad ones. she ends up being posesed by the hot sexy demon king and his brothers are trying to kill him. It now becomes her job to keep him alive at all costs.

Sorry for the jumble of words but Im super excited about this series.

Leana (craftychick) | 123 comments Anyone read the Black Dagger Brotherhood series from J.R. Ward? Not sure if anyone has mentioned it yet.

Dark Lover (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #1) by J.R. Ward

The humor isn't as good as Sookie Stackhouse but the story is intense and so far an easy read. I am only about 75 pages into the first book, but I think I could read this series for the long haul.

Any thoughts on it from anyone that has read any of it?

I loved the BDB books. At first their names put me off and I thought they were ridiculous but the further I read, the more I just loved the Brothers. How can you not love the bad-assness of them and their total devotion to their mates? I don't care for the lesser's and matter-of-fact when I re-read any of the books, I skip most of the lesser parts. Even if you're not crazy about the books like a lot of us, I think they are still worth reading. Just my 2 cents...lol...

I am totally loving it Marilyn! I am almost halfway through and don't want to put it down now! {if only I could stay home and read all day! :D} I think this will be a fun series to get into. I am glad my friend Kambri was so insistant on me reading them for sure!

I don't mind the lesser parts. I don't love them, but I don't mind them either. I think it's a formula book and the author balances out the traditional good vs. evil plot line better than some other authors do. It still has the formula feel to it. But I don't mind reading those parts, at least so far.

message 78: by Melissa Rochelle (new)

Melissa Rochelle (melissarochelle) Someone may have already mentioned this...

The Kitty Norville books are very similar and quick reads. I've really enjoyed the first few that I read. Kitty is a werewolf that suddenly outs herself...and it goes from there.

Kitty and the Midnight Hour

I loved Wrath's book cuz I think he's the one that is the most sentimental out of the warriors (if you can call Wrath sentimental with his bad self!) The books get better as you go and the way the characters intertwine in the books is great. Everybody has their fave books and brother and mine are Zsadist, Wrath, and V. Zsadist's book is the 3rd one and I think it's one of the better ones. I didn't mind the lesser's parts the first time around either, but they're not a "have to" read if you read the books again. I've never thought of them as "formula" books but I still like them even if they are! lol! Their stories are good and there's a couple of relationships that you will be drawn into like the rest of us! Keep reading, I think you'll really enjoy them. I couldn't put them down when I read them...even at work I was sneaking and reading them!

message 81: by Leana (new)

Leana (craftychick) | 123 comments Ha ha! I wish I could sneak a peak at work! :D. I am past the half way point and Wrath is getting carried away. I love the book! Can't wait to read the next one for sure.

I used to be obsessed with reading Mary Higgins Clark when I was in high school. And after a while, all the books started to feel the same. I don't think this book and series will start to feel like that from all the good talk I hear about it! But it does remind me of how MHC sets her stories up and you always get the story from the evil persons perspective just like you do from the victim or hero. So the pattern feels the same to me as her books. But that is really all the formula I was referring to. The outline feels the same, but the story is all JR Wards and I LOVE it!

Can't wait to keep reading Marilyn!!!!!

Yay Paula! I have about 50 pages left now. I tried to read last night and fell asleep on the same page I started on :(. Hopefully I can finish tonight. I like Wellsie a lot. I wish she would have been in more of the book but I assume she will be in the other books, so I am ok with it.

I see what you guys were saying about the lesser parts even more. The book has a formula feel to it for sure, not that I mind!

I love what happened with Marissa! I liked her so I was glad with where the story went with her.
