Quickie Explanation of Cupcakes

• Cupcakes appear during a Mods’ Monthly Challenge.

• You earn cupcakes from Captain Cupcake for participating in mini-games and puzzles as posted in this thread for September. They’re totally optional, but a Team can cash them in to get free passes on challenges, or for extra points for larger books read. (More on this last below.)

• Cupcakes are tracked on a Google Spreadsheet on Captain Cupcake’s World of Puzzles & Cupcakes.

• There are links to the puzzles at the top of each column.

• Any column with a regular cupcake () only needs to be done once per team. These are usually easy jigsaws and slider puzzles.

• Any column with a “blinkie” cupcake () may be done by as many Team Members as want to participate. In fact, the more Team Members who complete the “blinkie” cupcake puzzles, the more options you will have when you cash them in. These are Word Finds, Crosswords, Doublets, Find the Duplicates and types of puzzles that are generally a bit more difficult.

• While “blinkies” may also be redeemed by the person who earned them (such as for hints for encryption puzzles), the cupcakes for BAPs are redeemed by Captains in the Captains’ Group.

• In earlier challenges they were used to count a book that was <160 pages; for a book that applied, but had been read before April 12th; for a graphic novel; in conjunction with "chunkster," Triple Threat, or Cutthroat books to count as a book read in a sub-option challenge category.

• Thus far, they have NOT been used for any Read-a-Thons.

• Sometimes puzzles are set up as a series. For these, on the spreadsheet they will change from a regular cupcake () to a cupcake of higher worth after the series is finished. Spot the Differences puzzles are an example of a series run and are coded grey in color. They only need to be done once per Team, but may be done by different Team Members. It is fine if you want to get together and work the solution.

• For regular and higher worth cupcakes you don’t get any bonuses for multiple Team Members completing them, but if you want to do them just for fun, there’s no reason not to! :)

• Blue cupcakes ( ) are ones that were earned during a “48 Hour Cupcake Crazy” make-up period.

• Sunday Update ★'s are earned by Captains, or their proxies, if they are on vacation.

• There are three different type of cupcakes worth BAPs*. Below are the different size books/word count/page count breakdown :
Cup Word Page Added Look Upon
cake Name Count Count BAPs* Redemption
“bouncy” or
“chunkster” 112,500 450 1

“Triple
Threat” 200,000 800 2

“Cutthroat
Competitor”
or Cuatro 350,000 1,400 4

*BAPs = Book Advantage Books, which are each equal to one book read.

~ What is the “bouncing” cupcake? ~

                    A new cupcake is coming,
                    so keep your eyes wide!
                    This new cupcake is bouncing,
                    with pep and with pride!

To earn it, your sharp eyes
                    will have to look close,
                    to spot all differences
                    in multiple puzzles we post!

Those big books, the thick ones,
                    with so many pages...
with this cupcake they'll count more.
                    It'll double their wages!

Remember the movie, remember the song?
I hope so, though this Doublet isn’t very long.

You’ll earn only one “bouncie,” no matter how many times submitted.
But, you’ll earn plenty of “blinkies” - that’s permitted.

PUZZLE #159 - Doublet from “Ben E. to Body”

Please DO NOT post solution here. Mail to ratminichallenges@gmail.com With Puzzle # in subject line. Be sure to tell me what Team you are assigned, though I have most of you memorized!

Doublets are word-link puzzles first created by Lewis Carroll. Changing only one letter at a time, and using the clues along the side, go from “mouth” to “tummy”... or vice versa!

This puzzle is worth one (1) “bouncie” cupcake .
And one “blinkie” cupcake to the every person who solves it.

BEN E. - “Stand by Me” singer King.
- Spine or femur, e.g.
- Someone with a terrible voice is “_ _ _ _ deaf.”
- Fork’s prong.
- 18:30 in Europe or 6:30 PM in the USA, e.g. We’re talking _ _ _ _.
- 10 ¢ent ¢oin
- To eat dinner at a restaurant.
- _ _ _ _-Dong, doorbell sound.
- Stephen _ _ _ _; author of the book made into a movie called “Stand by Me.”
- Put this with the answer above, and you have a famous ape.
- “Stand by Me” or “I'll Stand by You” or “Stand by Your Man” – any of them is a _ _ _ _.
- Unit of subjective loudness.
- Not mentally ill.
- “The Dark Knight Rises” villain.
- Said goodbye.
- Be an omen of an outcome.
BODY - “The ____,” – the novella on which the movie “Stand by Me” is based.

Yet another “Two in One,” for Radical Red.
If you have a laptop, you could do it in bed.

You have until the end of October, a nice long time.
Nevertheless, I must end here, to get this to rhyme.

PUZZLE #160: Radical Red. Larger picture is here.

Twenty piece Slider puzzle is here. Please take a screen print and show the "Very good, you win." box.

Jigsaw is here . Be sure to select “41 Piece Tetris” as the cut.

Okay to post in thread.

This set of puzzles is worth three “bouncing” cupcakes .

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments Can someone remind me: What are Blinkie cupcakes cashed in for? What is the benefit to having more than one person finish and turn in a puzzle? I remember that it came in handy in our second (I think? If I recall correctly!) Mod-created challenge but I don't recall it being used since then.

With Tower Team Round II coming to a close in the next few months, I'm wondering if there is any benefit in my doing a puzzle that already has 3 or 4 names from my team attached to it for a blinkie.

Thanks for any memory dusting anyone can do here. :)

ilovebakedgoods (Teresa) (ilovebakedgoods) | 226 comments Okay, thanks. So, since they aren't being used for October's RaT I won't feel like I *need* to worry about them so much. I think... maybe! Haha. *ignores the doublet, ignores the doublet*

I remember in one challenge they were used for "borrowing" from a teammate's shelf for one of our challenges, too. I think maybe the 7% solution... maybe... (that may be the "before April 12th" thing you mentioned)... too many cobwebs still on brain to remember this stuff now. Long as those webs come without spiders, I'll be fine, I suppose, hehehe.

Yes, Teresa, the "borrowing" (really used) was in connection with the <160 pages or using a book that had been read before April 12th (but after January 1st) - and was done by the Captains.

**shrugs** You never know, Barb. Someone **coughStevencough** keeps trying to persuade me to allow them to be cashed in for BAPs. I don't see that happening. However, someone else **cough❀Tea❀cough** is trying to get me to have them so Captains may redeem more "chunksters," "TTs," or "Cutthroats." Or is it the other way around? Sorry, can't remember. LOL!

Alas, we are back with our story.

PUZZLE #162 - Spot the Difference: “Music Box of Life”

Please DO NOT post solution here. Mail to ratminichallenges@gmail.com with Puzzle # in subject line. Be sure to tell me what Team you are assigned, though I have most of you memorized!

Yes, this puzzle is worth two “bouncing” cupcakes.

For this puzzle there are at least four(4) differences between the side-by-side pictures.
First in the series.

Larger size here.
