Sandi - Protester of Goofreads @thedailybeast: Is 'The Circle' our generation's 1984? http://t.co/dW4CdWkGS9

I loved 1984, am looking forward to this. It's very current, SyFy.

Sandi - Protester of Goofreads Good to know! I thought it sounded like fun from the review in the paper, I love books like this!

Marcy I read the long excerpt today, and I love the book madly. I just posted something about it, with the URL for the excerpt, in another topic, didn't know this was here.

Elisabet I am a dystopia fan and really enjoyed this book. After living abroad in countries that do not have all the technical devices that we have in the U.S. I came back assured that Americans had lost their minds. I cannot have a conversation with young people. Everyone is glued to a device while driving, walking up or down a staircase, eating with friends, on a date, or out with the kids. I think my students would get better grades if I text the lessons. The definition of the word friend has been distorted, and privacy, what is that? I had more privacy in every country I lived in. I wasn't filmed, or taped, or had my emails read. The Circle will soon be non-fiction.

Jason Similar experience, Elisabet, although I'm still abroad and have found that people in Asia are even worse about being 'glued to a device' at all times. Regardless, I feel like my enjoyment of and response to the book are very similar to yours.

Elisabet A Bookless Library!!! As a writer that is frightening. Is the day coming when I will not have the joy of seeing my book in print?

Jason, I live in a neighborhood that is predominantly Asian. One day, I am going to have a terrible accident because it's common for one to stop on a staircase abruptly to text. Are you a doctor on call? I want to ask. Someone gave me a Kindle because he said it must be burdensome to carry a book. Have you ever heard of someone getting a hernia or having a heart attack from carrying a book?

It is a new world and a crazy world.

Elisabet Thank you! I hope so, too.

Brenda Huwaldt sevcik What an awesome idea. Lots to think about. Did not believe the female character. Obviously written by a male. Could have been executed better.

Brenda Huwaldt sevcik I agree that good discussions could have occurred through the premise of the Circle; I do think the art of the book could have been better. It's not so much being connected to the internet at this point that's an issue; it's allowing that Circle to creep in. We carelessly allow ourselves to have our habits be analyzed for the sake of big data. I know I take the easy way out and say I'm not interesting enough for anyone to care bout what I do, so maybe we invite them in by not slamming the door? Anyway, let's hope someone is vigilant enough not to allow a "Circle" to wrap us up too tightly.
