My brother brought home an ARC of Sleeping Giants from a Comic Con - I may have to take a peek at it. The premise does look good. :)

Congrats, Shawnie! I won an October Daye ARC through GR Giveaway last year. That was my first time winning so I was glad it was for a series I really like.

Sarah | 641 comments Picked my mom up from a business trip today, so of course I had to make time to hit the bookstore at the airport. They have mainly used books, though some new ones too.
Bought a copy of The Eye of the World. People in this group keep mentioning this series so I figured it was worth buying it.

message 1036: by Christina (new)

Christina Pilkington | 163 comments I've preordered a copy of Gathering Shadows with Amazon Prime, and I'm supposed to get it on Tuesday. I'm going to wait to read it until next month, though, because it was chosen as a BOM in another group I am in.

I'm glad we're not reading it until next month, though, because I am SO behind in reading a lot of prequels that I've received in the mail in the past two months like Morning Star (I'm most excited to read this one!), City of Blades, A Criminal Magic, All the Birds in the Sky,and Winged Histories. And of course I have two library books out now (a short story collection called The Unfinished World, and a YA book called The Girl from Everywhere), as well as probably close to 100 unread books on my shelves and Kindle. Sigh.

Tehehehe :D

I have been trying to be good in not buying any new books except tracing down second hand Tamora Pierce books. There is a particular edition I like, Scholastic Press c.1998-2000 ish, which have nice illustrated covered (not cartoony) and are the first ones I read. On the whole I can get them second hand for approx £2-3 (postage included), but there are a couple which presumably due to low number of copies are £9+ which is pretty expensive for what they are, so I am collecting the cheaper ones first :)

I have such fond memories of reading the Song of the Lioness books from when I was about 11 onwards. I definitely wanted to be a knight for a while after reading those!

They're also one of the few series that I still regularly go back and re-read, and I love them all over again every single time I do :-)

A bit of googling informs me that my original copies are the Red Fox UK paperbacks, although for ages I couldn't find a copy of book two - I read 1,3 and 4 and then hunted it down years later - so I have the Random House paperback of that. It's a shame to not have a matching set, but I was delighted to find *any* copy of it when I picked it up!

I keep meaning to go back and read her other books, but last time I looked (a while ago) it wasn't particularly easy to find them. Maybe it's time to look again...

I bought a few books in PS Publishings clearout sale
I got a lovely Ray Bradbury poetry book called Greentown and a few quirky novellas Gorel and the Pot-Bellied God
Living with the Dead byDarrell Schweitzer
and The Fair Grounds by Tobias Seamon.
Haven't tried any of their books yet so interesting to see but with all four books coming as special edition and signed hardbacks for 12 quid all together its worth a try

message 1040: by Pauvel (new)

Pauvel | 18 comments The last books I bought:
1) The Marble Collector by Cecelia Ahern( completed it)
2) The Complete Father Brown stories by G.K.Chesterton(reading it slowly story by short story)
3) Irene by Piere Lemaitre
4) Martin Chuzzlewit by Charles Dickens
5) The Storyteller's Tale by Omair Ahmad

It's going to take me forever to get around to reading them as I re-read some old novels in between :)

I keep meaning to read the Father Brown stories. There's been a tv adaptation of it on the BBC recently with Mark Williams (who plays Mr Weasley in the Harry Potter films) as Father Brown and I think it's brilliant!

message 1043: by Pauvel (new)

Pauvel | 18 comments @Vinca
Idk, but after Sherlock Holmes, every other detective character seems less interesting to me. Father Brown didn't impress me so far. But seeing that I've read only two shorts, I guess I'll reserve my judgement till later.
And Mr.Weasley as Father Brown is definitely worth a watch :)

So true Vinca! They were just perfect to read aged 11-13, and I definitely wanted to be either a knight, rogue or wild mage for ages! :)

I enjoyed the Mark Williams Father Brown adaptations, but I confess that the stories remain half-read on a shelf somewhere, waiting for me to get back to them and continue!

Sword of Destiny (The Witcher, #2) by Andrzej Sapkowski <- Yay! They finally published this in the right size to fit the first one in the series. So of course I had to get it when I saw it :) Been waiting for it. Yes, I want my series to be the same editions.

All the Birds in the Sky by Charlie Jane Anders <- This one seems interesting, its been released not to long ago and I had my eyes on it for a while :)
