Andrew Have you tried The Hobbit? It's much more accessible, being written for a younger audience. And shorter, obviously. It's still a bit old fashioned, but it has a classical sense of whimsy and adventure that is always fun to return to.

I do like The Hobbit more than LOTR.

I just picked up The Innocent Mage, The Awakened Mage and The Farm for a whopping $2.

I haven't read anything by either author but hopefully they'll be good.

LOVE The Lies of Locke Lamora! I have the second book in the series that I still need to read.

Its great , starts a little slow but it really gets going.

I've heard a lot of people say it (and other books) start slow. Am I the only person who finds that the world building and origin stories are often the best part.

I've read Jonathan Strange and Mr Norell twice and loved it. Its intricate but a gret story. And the writing is beautiful.

Have read Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell. Was good but very long! I have a copy of Codex lurking on a shelf that I have borrowed in my daughters room

I really enjoyed Drakenfeld and its sequel.I couldnt recommend Bruan Staveley's series anymore. Emperors Blades is great and its sequel is exceptional

message 716: by Andrew (new)

Andrew I really liked Strange and Norrell. It is very slow, meandering, and episodic for the first 600 pages, and then an ongoing, suspenseful final 200 pages. The characters are memorable and unique, and the destinations were all very different than I expected.

Very different than most fantasy novels I love, but in a good way. IF you bear with the slow style and Victorian speech.

message 717: by Paul, A wanderer in unknown realms (new)

Paul | 3571 comments Mod
Go in expecting the 19th century style an you're fine I think. Its part of the charm. I know it put some readers off when they tried it but I lament at the number of readers being shocked that a book set in Georgian England uses some of the language and style if the time. And to be fair the blurb pretty much let them know what they were i for.
I agree with you Andrew , its a very different fantasy in a good way. Quite a slow pace as well

message 718: by Andrew (new)

Andrew LOL :D "Slow", not boring. Well, I guess that's in the eye of the beholder. To me it was like a series of leisurely strolls. All of them amusing or fascinating in their own way. Some very gripping, some just quaint, some funny, etc.

The titular Strange does not become a regular character (or even properly introduced!) until about page 200. At which point he kind of becomes the MAIN character! Haha it's very different, but personally I loved it.

Just bought Ruin by John Gwynne. Absolutely loved the first 2 of the quadrilogy and am excited to begin this one. So far it has gotten really strong reviews and is sitting @ 4.47* as of this comment.

It may go down a bit as the Canadian release just happened (not sure about U.S.)
But it is definitely one of my favourite newer series. If you like Stavely I would think you would enjoy this as well.

Also the author is a stand up guy that puts in a real effort to talk with his fans. I regularly talk to him in messages and he has suggested books for my kids and all sorts of stuff

I just finished Dracula a few days ago. It was good. A bit slow to get going and the end feels a little rushed, but overall I thought it was good.

message 724: by Emma (new)

Emma Just bought Rat Queens volume 2. Comics and graphic novels are the only paper books I buy these days unless something is out of print, or a bargain from a charity shop.

As a Dubliner I have to push Dracula, Lancer. One of my favourite books . We are in the middle of the Bram Stoker festival in Dublin at the moment.
I also lectured in the same university as Stoker attended and am a member of the historical society he founded:-)

After reading The Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde I am in the mood for some Victorian stuff so I couldn't pass it up when I saw it. Would read it now but with sci fi month coming up it will have to wait a little bit

Good picks Kimberly. To Kill A Mockingbird is one of my all-time favorites, I read it about once a year. Have you read it before?

I want to check out The Rest of Us Just Live Here also :)

I honestly don't know. Only 3 people rated it as YA on Goodreads. The rest all voted it fantasy/high fantasy.

I went to a local author event today, and many of them had deals on their books, so today I acquired for a dollar or free on Kindle

The Subtle Beauty
Stolen Luck
The Eden Plague
Eye On Orion

Then the author of Reaper's Run gave me a copy of that book.
