I've actually been considering a reread of the name of the wind and w..."
Did you see when book 3 is going to be released?
2017.. oh the pain of having to wait for the next book in a great series. (George r.r Martin I'm looking at you too)
I still don't think GRRM will ever actually finish the whole series. Pesimistic but for every one book he writes he decides to add another two to the series. Never ending.

Which is one more than I have read Johanna!

I agree.. He doesn't seem to have his whole heart in the series anymore.. But he's kind of forced to write on because of the amount of fans he has. I hoped that the story would progress in the last book but nothing really happened (Dany's still far away from westeros). Sometimes I have the feeling that George killed too many important characters to get the shocking factor and now doesnt know how to end everything. (Hope I'm wrong though.. But all my favorite characters died and I didn't like where Tyrions story is leading.. and John?) I hope for the next book to come out next year.. (what do you think will it come out 2016?) And it's sad that the tv series is finished with the books already. But what can I do? I still love the series :D
I'll be first in line when the next book appears :-) I don't know how far it will progress things but the way he split stuff across book 4 and 5 really skewed things. I think he has to get the book out at some point next year or else the series will get way to far ahead. But I agree , I'm not sure his heart is in it now.

He's supposed to have canceled events, conventions and interviews because he's so busy writing. Sounds good.

Now I'm wondering what this big twist is going to be?
I hope he doesn't kill Tyrion.. A lot of people love him and as we now that's one reason more for George to finish him off :D

Maybe that's his goal.. less people that bother him to finish the series :D

I gave up on him for partly this reason and partly because he doesn't seem to care that his fans want him to finish, in fact it seems more like the opposite that he wants to spite all the people that do want him to finish.

I have to be on GRRM's side. He has always taken a long time to complete the next book in the series. It's not anything new. (He began the series in 1996 and I believe it took him 6 years to complete A Dance with Dragons.) As much as I have been fiending for the next installment, I would rather he do it right instead of quickly. Of course, this means it may never get finished but it is what it is.
I have to add as well, if I was an author and the internet was telling me that I needed to finish my series because I was fat and old and would probably die soon, I wouldn't do those people any favors and hurry to finish.

He spends quite a bit of time making jokes about how long it takes him , while attending pretty much every convention, reading the entire Hugo nomination list, opening a cinema, writing other material for comics or screenplays etc.
He has every right to do these things his way but I do believe his heart has gone out of the series , maybe he's produced too much material or feel its swamped him. ( and in the past he has managed a 1 year and 2 year turn around between books so he can manage it)

I don't really want to make a big deal out of this because honestly it's not my favorite series and I don't know that I'd read them if he put them out at a Sanderson pace, but as he does have every right to do these things then I have every right to dislike him for his lack of regard for his fans. For me it's a mediocre series that I'd probably get around to given enough time to read them, but his attitude towards his fans (and come on it can't be a surprise that he's not the healthiest looking guy in the world and writes at a snail's pace) makes me have zero interest in his works. There are plenty of authors out there that I can respect and enjoy their works, enough to keep me reading for the rest of my life, that I don't feel the need to read works from people I don't respect, i.e. GRRM, Larry Correia, Orscon Scott Card...)

I gave up on ASOIAF about two thirds through A Feast For Crows. It just bothered me that instead of actually builsing plot he just killed people off. It's almost like crappy horror movies. Instead of actually making you scared they throw a shit load of jump scares in. I will finish watching the show if I want to see how it is resolved.
Do we need a ASOIAF thread? :P I feel like that would add some lively debate. I would move all these posts to a new thread if I could - but sadly GR's forum system is not very advanced...
Roger, you totally have a right not to like/respect him. I was just saying that it wasn't anything new with him being that way.
Yes, he has a lot more projects but I think being a successful author opens a lot more possibilities in your life. No, that does not mean you should shuck your responsibilities to the fans that helped put you were you are in life. Because if it wasn't for those people, you wouldn't be able to do all those fun things that you get to do now.
I have authors that I refuse to read too, for the exact same reasons. Ann Aguirre and Stephen King for example.

What is with Stephen king? Is he slow too? (I didnt read a lot from him yet)

Johanna, for me with Stephen King, it's a long story. He's one author I just really hate. I feel like he wipes his butt with 300+ pages and a lot of people call it gold. His older stuff is good, but I stopped reading anything by him after Bag of Bones.

I agree hybrid, with King I'll generally only read his older stuff. Reading the stand right now and so far it's quite good

As for the rest of King's works, which I think is like 50-60 books, I've only read a handful and rather enjoyed them. I don't often pick up pure horror, which rules out a lot. There have been a number of his novels which just seemed kind of bleh on the topic, so I haven't bothered.
As for his recent books being bad--There are a number there I am not interested in. Mr Mercedes? Meh. Aside from Columbo, I prefer Who-dunnits to How-catchems.11/22/63 was fairly recent, and I felt really amazing. One of my favorites. Dreamcatcher is on the tail end of his "newer" books, and it doesn't get a lot of love, but I really enjoyed it and also the movie lol Not a masterpiece, but fun and suspenseful and different. I really liked Doctor Sleep--it gets a lot of hate for being so different in tone from The Shining, but it was supposed to be.
I am vaguely interested in checking out The Colorado Kid stories. The next book on my to-read list is coincidentally an older King, The Talisman.

A Spy by Nature
The Remains of the Day
Cold: Extreme Adventures at the Lowest Temperatures on Earth
And even though I have read these, I picked them up to pass on to others:
Station Eleven
Penguins Stopped Play
Real Fast Food
I am actually currently reading the stand and @ 200 pages I am really enjoying it. Makes you weary of those who are sick.
There was a book sale at my university and I picked up Dune, Neuromancer, and Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep. The total for all three was 5$ Canadian so not bad :)

That's actually quite sad.. Since he has such a huge fanbase he probably thinks that he doesn't have to deliver the same quality as he did with his first books.. Fans are going to buy it anyway. Or he doesn't have good ideas anymore but is forced to bring out new books from his agency/for the money.
Which King book would you recommend to me as a starter?

Nothing feels better than buying a ton of books :)
I just bought The alloy of Law (Mistborn 4), Jane Boleyn true story of the infamous Lady rochford and Prince of Thorns by Mark Lawrence.

I actually never saw the whole movies and still wait patiently for it to run on tv someday. But I'm pretty sure that this movie is responsible a lot of clown phobia :D which is the scariest King story for you?

Stephen King did some fantastic writing.I would recommend the stand, the talisman, and black house. The Shining is the only book I have ever read that actually creeped me out.Far better than the movie.Misery is very good also.I cant imagine someone saying point blank that he is a crappy writer.I strongly disagree, although the end of the gunslinger series really pissed me off,and I havent read much of him since.Give Misery a try,It is quick anyway. The Stand is fantastic but is a lot to bite off.big book.

I have read most of kings work, and the shing remains the only book by any author that actually creeped me out.

I've yet to read The Green Mile, or the stories that Shawshank Redemption and Stand By Me were based on. I have a real problem where if I see a movie of something first, I never read the book, even if I LOVED the movie LOL Meanwhile, if I read the book first, 95% of the time I think the book was better haha

tried reading the first one got about half way through then just skipped to the bromine bit at the end

I agree. And it's weird because I will gladly read a book I love multiple times, even if I later see the movie. But see the movie first? *shrug* I dunno what it is lol

Thanks Jeff I will put them on my to read list and start with the shining! (I hope I'm going to be creeped out)

I didn't read the Lord of the rings yet too .. I always thought I was the only one and felt alone in this big world full of lotr fans :D

If you watch it first you see the movie without any expectations, you don't mind missing characters and don't wait for events that you liked in the book but weren't important enough for the movie. You don't expect a character to look a certain way too.
You just enjoy the movie. And the other way around it's the same.. You think you know what's going to happen and then it's all very different.

The LOTR was an exception for me, I liked the movie a lot more than the books. The books just get bogged down in details about how things look and it bores me. And I did read the books before I watched the movies.

I also prefer the movies, but that didn't take away from my enjoyment of the books. They are both strong In there own aspects.
I think a lot of it is that I have such a strong request for the books and Tolkien and what they mean to the fantasy genre

True. There are probably a lot books out there today that are much better but Lotr was the first real fantasy book & started the whole genre. For a lot of people & authors it was the book that started their love for fantasy too.
I really want to read them at least once but i tried once and couldn't get warm with them. But i will try again :)
