Lisa (lml369_07) | 58 comments Finally, finally, finally purchased a copy of The Hobbit. I know shame on me for waiting so long haha

message 602: by proxyfish (new)

proxyfish | 58 comments Talking of Poundland...I saw some (probably terrible) books in Aldi recently which specified that they were 'Reading Books'. Thank goodness they decided to clarify that!

The last book I bought was Half a War by Joe Abercrombie which I am looking forward to immensely!

...and John has just reminded me that I do actually own a copy of The Gone-Away World which must have buried itself several years ago in the dark recesses of my bookcase. Oops!

message 603: by proxyfish (new)

proxyfish | 58 comments And just realised that no one is actually talking about Poundland...yay first page confusion!

Trevor (sundowner) It will become obvious that I'm an avid buying/hoarder/collecter :)
Latest buys are:
Magician because I'm trying to catch up with you all on July's read, I've recently reread Fahrenheit 451.
The Reality Dysfunction and The Naked God whilst having put The Neutronium Alchemist on order, all by Peter F Hamilton.
Oh BTW, I volunteeer in a bookshop :)

I loved the reality dysfunction but have never got to reading the following two. They are just so bloody long. I will get to them someday though.

They are rather daunting looking at them sitting on the shelf. They currently sit next to my one volume LOTR and each is thicker than that!

I'm pretty sure all three break the 1000 page mark. The reality dysfunction did and tool me almost a month to read.

They do, book #2 is over 1200 pages as is book #3. For me that is about 6 or 7 days reading.

I guess it depends how you look at it though, GOT is for me very boring yet I've read the first two books with no plans to read more yet they are around the 800 page mark and even though I didn't really like them I still got through them in under a week. I guess it also depends on the free time you have, I have plenty of it :)

Meera | 58 comments I bought Old Man's War for $2.99 since I liked Lock In so much.

Old man's war has been on my list for a long time. I had just started redshirts but lost it when I moved. I have heard lots of good things about old man's war

message 612: by Lisa (new)

Lisa (lml369_07) | 58 comments I really want to read Old Man's War. I listened to the audio book version of Redshirts read by Wil Wheaton and LOVED it. I recommend that book to people all the time. :)

Very dangerous volunteering in a book shop Trevor!!

I have bought August's BotMs which I'm looking forward to starting this weekend! :)

message 614: by Meera (new)

Meera | 58 comments Old Man's War is still 2.99 for the kindle! I bought Finch for 1.99 today. It's a kindle daily deal.

I couldn't imagine working on a book shop. My book shelves would be even more overwhelming. This is why I can only buy ebooks or borrow from the library right now.

message 615: by Trevor (new)

Trevor (sundowner) Ummmm
Silverthorn by Raymond E Feist. Currently reading Magician and we had this in the shop. I also put #3 on reserve as we had that as well :)
I got these as they are quite poor condition but I can read them and I put a donation in the box.
Red Planet by Robert Heinlein
The Dramaturges of Yan by John Brunner
Bloodhype by Alan Foster Dean
One Against Time by Astron del Martia??? This one looks like it could be a lemon after reading reviews, we shall see.

Nice bargains

message 619: by Trevor (new)

Trevor (sundowner) A couple more:
A Darker Shade of Magic kindle version ready for the August BOTM
Bride of a Bygone War by Preston Fleming again the kindle version. I've read one of his books so far, a distopian thriller, I follow this author on Facebook and he keeps offering his books for free for a 24 hour period every so often, so I grab them when they are free.

I tool Darker Shade of Magic off the shelves and ready to start it this week. I quite enjoyed vicious and a few of our members gave this great reviews so definitely worth a try.

Trevor (sundowner) The Neutronium Alchemist by Peter F Hamilton, I now have all 3 so over 3500 pages to look forward too

I just picked up Exile (Forgotten Realms The Dark Elf Trilogy, #2; Legend of Drizzt, #2) by R.A. Salvatore & Sojourn (Forgotten Realms The Dark Elf Trilogy, #3; Legend of Drizzt, #3) by R.A. Salvatore for $0.50 each.
I still don't have the first book Homeland but at those prices I couldn't resist.

Deb (curlygeek) | 1 comments I recently bought Nice Dragons Finish Last by Rachel Aaron, which was a fun read. My husband just bought Armada by Ernest Cline, which we'll be sharing.

Hybrid l, I know a lot of people don't like the D&D books but they have a special place in my heart because they were what got me into reading (especially fantasy and sci fi) back when I was 10 or so. I would say to read the icewind Dale trilogy before the dark elf trilogy though

I bought the first two Skullduggery Pleasant books yesterday , Kevin highly recommended them and a preorder also arrived Madagaskar Plan , the second in an alternate history series set in Africa based in a world where Germany won WWII.

Good to hear. A quick read us needed after a few heavy books

message 630: by Kevin (new)

Kevin Glad you enjoyed it Roger and very glad you've decided to give it a go Paul. I don't think you will be disappointed by the series and given that it is aged at 9-12s you might be taken aback by how dark and unforgiving it is.

I'm not sure if any folks on here are readers of Darren Shan but I bumped into him last night while I was out for a few drinks. It was a nice surprise to get after collecting my pint from the counter to have him standing there beside me. He is the writer who turned me into the reader I am today so I didn't hesitate in thanking him without trying to sound like the diehard fan that I am. He was really humble albeit it a tad tipsy and an overall lovely fellow. Quite mental to meet him out though!

Great to meet a hero and not be dissapointed. Very cool.
I'd be dissapointed in a horror fantasy aimed at 9-12 that wasnt very dark. Proper kids story should be dark.

Lisa (lml369_07) | 58 comments I wish I could meet my favorite author! What a cool experience. :)

I finally broke down and purchased 'The Girl on the Train' today. I've been dancing around that book for months now and it keeps showing up everywhere and when it popped up on my Amazon today I finally said screw it and did the deed. I hope it's good and worth my time!

I'd like to hear what you think of "The Girl on the Train" Lisa. I read it recently but I never got fully invested in the story.

Lisa (lml369_07) | 58 comments OK I'll let you know! I've heard mixed reviews so I'm interested in how I'll like it. Gotta take a chance on books on occasion. Sometimes it pays off, sometimes it doesn't.

Bought Red Rising in anticipation of next months ( sorry if its too new for some members) I also picked up John Scalzi Lock In ( If your going to annoy the conservatives may as well go while hog)
Quite looking forward to both. I know Lancer is a big fan of tge Red Rising series so I'll trust him.

Yes, yes I am and the sequel golden son was just a strong. It just hit a lot of the notes for what I enjoy. Hybrid enjoyed it quite a bit as well if I'm correct. But of course either now have to wait for the last book in the trilogy :(

I will have to try to retain what I remember. They aren't the longest books so when #3 comes out I am going to reread them.

I've actually been considering a reread of the name of the wind and wise man's fear. I really enjoyed them and am sure I would enjoy them again

I know, I'm counting down the days! I rarely read things I so t like since I do a bit of research beforehand and talk it over with you guys. But I Haven't been totally taken by a series like I have with this one since the Silo trilogy.

Did you read Howeys next book after the Silo series , Sand. Just curious as they are making a TV series now. I enjoyed Sand but I'd much rather see the Silo books adapted

Have yet to read sand, but I agree, the Silo books would make an excellent show.

I skimmed through the graphic novel when I spotted it on a grocery store shelf just to compare what the author thought things looked liked to my own imaginings. It was pretty good, but I almost preferred not to have seen it to preserve my own vision.
