Abi Killen | 66 comments A must for the literary London tour is forbidden planet, if you go downstairs its all sci fi & fantasy books & tons of comics too :D

I really have to go back there. There is a Forbidden Planet in Dublin but it is shockingly poor in comparison.
This week in the post I got a copy of Sagans Diary by John Sclazi. Its a novella that follows on from Ghost Brigades. I managed to get it for 3 pound plus 3 pound delivery from a goodwill store in the states , considering they sell for around 20-30 pounds and I was getting it delivered to Ireland I think I got a bargain.

Hey, Claire, would you mind sharing that? I'd love to have a few ideas where to stop by on my next trip to London.

First post birthday book shop trip after a 6 week ban and I bought up three books ,
The Falcon Throne by Karen Miller
The Crimson Campaign by Brian McLellan
and John Saturnall's Feast by Lawrence Norfolk

I also ordered three from Amazon, our current botm Vicious and VE Schwabs other book A Darker Shade of Magic. I also ordered The End Has Come an Anthology by John Joseph Adams and Hugh Howey. Its the third in a set of three anthologies with stories carrying through the set.

Book sale at the library. Fill one bag with books for $5, get a second bag free. (I only filled one.) They do this monthly and I need to start remembering to go every single time.

The Eye of the World
Sunshine
The Clan of the Cave Bear
Real Murders
The Living Dead 2

I may be crazy but I tried to get into the wheel of time books and read through the first book. Just couldn't get into it. A friend of mine that had read them said that the next five or six were much of the same. I guess I decided it was to much of an investment of time/money for something I found mediocre. But I always here/see comments of people that absolutely loved them and it leaves me wondering if I'm missing out. The same thing happened to me with Malazan book of the fallen. Read Gardens of the Moon and had a lot of trouble and never continued yet always see people saying it is the greatest epic fantasy of all time if you can get through the first few books.

Wheel of Time is the only epic fantasy series I've started that I gave up on. Several of the books seemed to be the same with no real progression and I eventually lost interest.

message 524: by Cupcakes & Machetes, Hybrid Creature (new)

Cupcakes & Machetes (hybridcreature) | 888 comments Mod
I've heard that the Wheel of Time series is great up until book 8 and there it really slows down until Brandon Sanderson picks up the series to finish it. I'll read the first one eventually and see how I feel about it before continuing.
I also have Gardens of the Moon but I just haven't read it yet. I think I literally have about 30+ books about my house that I haven't read yet lol.

I have now passed to 70 mark in physical books sitting waiting to be read. What can you do. I can't resist buying

Lancer (elancer) | 1667 comments Mod
I know what you mean, between what I haven't read on my ereader and physical books I'm around the 30-40 mark. Seems every time I run into a used book store or book sale there is something for 2$ I end up grabbing. Then end up with too many series on the go!

Aaand 24 hours later I just bought The Black Prism!

message 529: by Andrew (new)

Andrew I agree with that assessment of WoT, hybrid--especially if you are reading them back to back. The better books are towards the beginning, but of those "better books", the first one (while still very good) is the "worst". The characters come into their own in the following books. Then around 8 it starts to meander quite a bit, but picks back up in the final 3 books, big time.

message 530: by Cupcakes & Machetes, Hybrid Creature (new)

That's good to know that the second is better than the first. I will keep that in mind when I start reading it. Thanks. :)

does have a bit of a blip in the middle but even they are not bad books just not as good as the first about 6

I last bought Shadow Study, which I'm excited about, but I haven't had a chance to get to it yet. I have over 200 to-read books on GR plus bunch on my literal bookshelf and e-reader. Sometimes I spend more time looking for new books instead of reading.

message 533: by Lancer, Warden of the Slums (new)

Lancer (elancer) | 1667 comments Mod
Audrey I totally agree I start looking and finding stuff and get so excited to only realize later it will be six months to a year before I even will get to start the, and that's only if I can get through all the new releases of series I've already began

Same! I can also sometimes spend ages organising my GR shelves instead of reading...

I have the first book of Snyder's other series, that Shadow Study sort of goes on from, to read :)

Poison Study is one of my top favorites, and I have bought and read all of Snyder's others. I want to re-read Magic and Fire Study before Shadow Study, though.

Good to hear! It's high up on my list :) Actually I have the first two books on my Kindle too... maybe the third as well, can't remember.

message 537: by Trillian (new)

Trillian I wanted to read another book by Scalzi and since I wanted a stand alone and not another series, I decided to buy Fizzy Nation. I'm really looking forward to this book after I've finished Fall of Hyperion.

Agreed Paul, on Blood Song at least, I haven't read steel heart yet but it's Sanderson so I can pretty much assume it will be good. Promise of Blood/Tower Lord were two of my favourite books read this last year.

I am doing the 2015 reading challenge and since a lot of the reviews classify it as a comical book, I am reading it as my funny book.
