how many of you have shed tears while reading a book?

To put it out there, I have never cried while reading a book. It's strange because movies have always succeded in bringing tears to my eyes. But I dunno why even when I'm reading a very emotional and moving piece of work, it just doesn't happen. I may feel very sad, yes, but nothing else.

Now I got to thinking if maybe I'm not getting very involved while reading. but maybe it changes from person to person, maybe it is a gender thing. what about y'all?

I shouldn't admit it but I cried profusely reading The Book thief by Markus Zusak .

I never cried reading a book or for that matter watching a film. The closest I came to crying was while watching Passion of Christ

I can't say I have cried but I had tears in my eyes.

It happened with Ladies Coupé (I was really moved at the end of the book by the story of the main character) and Life and Fate, above all this one, it is so touching.

If I will remember other books I will add them!

If i were to recollect it happened with Broke back mountain short story. Especially last two pages. When Patroculous dies in the book Song of Achilles, ending of One flew over cuckoo's nest and many more negative ending books.

well, I have to say I've definitely cried a few times while reading...and the books were-
New Moon(twilight saga 2)(read it some 5 years ago...n I was in love with Edward...n I was totally stupid)
Acheron and Styxx by Sherrilyn Kenyon...read them recently...from a series..amazing stories...but extremely sad.

I also had tears in my eyes in a particular seen from son's of fortune by Jeffery Archer.

Books are always able to affect me somehow...

What's the need to cry ! I just enjoy the essence of the book and of course certain book has its own effect on us .Books make you joyous,laugh,motivate and at times feel the emotions of the certain characters. but not crying.!

Dobby's death always does it for me. It's rare for a book to affect me so much, which is why I admire JK Rowling's storytelling.

I have not cried while reading, maybe I haven't come across so deeply emotional book, but I was scared at one point while reading Angels and Demons.
Getting struck emotionally by a book must be an awesome feeling, I bet.

I cried when I read the climax of "How to ruin your bf's reputation" when I read abot he accepted that he kissed other girl and while I read "how to ruin your summer vacation" when dad and daughter finally had their love proved to each other.
P.S. Don't go by the names of the books. It's a good story of a teenage girl...

The above books are pretty much in my Can't-stop-crying list...
I recently read Allegiant be Veronica Roth..and anyone who feels they need to cry while reading the book should try Khalled Hosseini
I've cried upon many deaths in the Harry Potter series and the Hunger Games (especially Finnick)
and these weren't soft lady-like tears which trickle down your cheeks in an elegant way..these were full blown howls and wails...

The Fault In Our Stars made me cry a lot...
Technically i'm a very emotional person, so I cry reading almost any book which is remotely sad. :P If you do need a good cry I reccomend Chicken Soup For The Teenage Soul On Tough Stuff. It has some really heart-breaking stories.

Harry Potter series is one that made me cry at the death of each of the major characters- Sirius, Dumbledore, Hedwig, Dobby and Fred... And I was devastated after I finished reading the last book... For a while I didn't know what to do with my life anymore. LOL!

Another book that made me cry is The Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank.

Last i shed tears was when i was watching Parent Trap a couple of days ago for the umpteenth time...the climax where the parents meet their estranged daughters - i could soooo relate to their joy!!!

This is a 6 month late reply! Are you talking about Parent Trap with Hayley Mills? Or has there been a more recent one made? I didn't shed tears, but I loved it.

I have deliberately never read Anne Frank because I know I would find it too incredibly sad, as it is what really happened. I was reading Daniel Finkelstein in The Times the other day, and he wrote that his three aunts and grandmother were in Bergen Belsen, where Anne Frank and her sister and mother were sent.They were watching through the wire when Anne and her sister arrived, whom they knew from their childhood in Amsterdam. Anne died from Typhus, but Daniel Finkelstein's aunts survived. I believe they were released on false passports and were put on a train for Switzerland. Their mother had been giving the three girls some of her rations of food to help them to survive, and she herself was in such a weakened state that she lived until the day they reached Switzerland and safety. Then she died as they crossed the border.

I shed tears of being at loss when I closed Harry Potter and to make things worse I was outside having lunch and reading! They all thought the food was too bad to be true :D

i cried while reading A prisoner of birth.. when danny writes a letter to his fiancee from the jail... i just couldnt hold myself..

I can't even count the number of times a book has made me cry!
Certainly, all the major deaths in Harry Potter made be cry.. heck I even cried when Hedwig died :'(
Khaled Hosseini's books are just so compelling that I actually ended up bawling (esp in A Thousand Splendid Suns).
I remember when I was reading Kane and Abel while riding the bus once.. n I was so close to tears, n I happened to look up n realised I was in the wrong bus! That certainly killed all the emotion in that moment :|

I wept after reading The Book Thief', 'Me before you', ' The Kite runner', ' The boy in the striped pyjamas'....There were many other books which brought a lump to my throat.. which brought tears welling up...I believe, crying 'with' a book is just as normal as all the other things you do in the company of a book - laughing out aloud, giggling hopelessly, catching yourself smile unawares, being scared out of your pants, .. anger, frustration, depression.... but one way or the other, everything finally winding down to sheer HAPPINESS...
