SandyC (sandyc88) | 170 comments For event #2, we need to decide on 5 tasks and work together to complete them. They must be posted in order.

Just brainstorming some books I have for the categories:

Theme #9 Cover hunt Orange is the New Black My Year in a Women's Prison by Piper Kerman

Theme #10 Special Abilities:
Rebel Angels (Gemma Doyle, #2) by Libba Bray

Theme #2 Masters of Horror:
Salem's Lot by Stephen King

We could do spell-it-outs for themes 4 and 7. Sky's the limit here! (We only need to use up to 5 letters)

Theme #4 Trick or Treat:
SNICKERS
BABY RUTH
COSTUME
JACK O LANTERN

Theme #7 Halloween Party
MONSTER MASH
BOBBING FOR APPLES
MUSICAL CHAIRS
COSTUME CONTEST

Amy H (twinypa) | 106 comments I can help out with the spell it out. I don know how helpful I will be with the categories bc I hate reading must of those topics so I will try the best I can

LOL Amy, I know what you mean. :-)
The good news is, we can probably work it out to where you would only need to read for the spell it outs, or maybe read just 1 for the other categories.

message 6: by SandyC (new)

SandyC (sandyc88) | 170 comments Also, if more people join in to read the 15 required books, it will be easier for everyone.

message 7: by Kay Kay (new)

Kay Kay Hi! Are we doing the read like a banshee portion. I just went back to school, so I have lots of pages assigned.

message 8: by SandyC (new)

SandyC (sandyc88) | 170 comments Yes, we are doing both events!

message 9: by Jenn (new)

Jenn (engelsigh) Themes 6, 8 and 9 are where I can really rock it out. I think that paranormal creatures one would be better than the horror one? I think it leaves more options. I have a huge stack of paranormal books to be read, a few horror...that's my two cents, take it for what it's worth. But I also agree we should have a spell it out for the people not into horror/paranormal stuff which is what most of the rest of it seems like.

message 10: by Jenn (new)

Jenn (engelsigh) Question on the theme challenge....can the books be started prior to the challenge or do they have to be books begun October 4?

message 11: by SandyC (new)

SandyC (sandyc88) | 170 comments Jennifer wrote: "Question on the theme challenge....can the books be started prior to the challenge or do they have to be books begun October 4?"

There is an ongoing debate about this on the main challenge thread. Sonia (the challenge moderator) has not made a final ruling yet.

I can find something for every category so I'm up for whatever the team chooses. (It would be nice to get more interest!)

Would anyone object to having two spell-it-outs for our 4th and 5th tasks? You can use title, author, or character name.

message 13: by Amy (new)

Amy H (twinypa) | 106 comments I agree for spell it outs

message 14: by Joyce (new)

Joyce (eternity21) Ok I'm in for both events.

I would be good for #2 #8 or #10 sections as I particularly love paranormal stuff.(it is almost all I read LOL) Spell it outs are always good too.

on event #1 read a thon is there a minimum page count and do the books read for event #2 count toward event #1?

message 15: by Midu (new)

Midu Hadi okay, event 2 just made my head swim! can someone tell me what to do?

message 16: by Midu (new)

Midu Hadi can two members choose the same theme?

message 17: by SandyC (last edited Oct 01, 2013 06:21AM) (new)

SandyC (sandyc88) | 170 comments Midu wrote: "can two members choose the same theme?"

Yes.
We need to complete 5 tasks.
Task 1 = 1 book from 1 theme
Task 2 = 2 books from 1 theme
Task 3 = 3 books from 1 theme
Etc.

So, for example (this is just an example), we choose Theme #8 Supernatural Creatures for task 3. Midu, Amy, and Joyce each read a book with a supernatural creature for that task.

Make sense?

I believe the minimum page count is 160. Books read for event 1 will count for event 2.

SandyC (sandyc88) | 170 comments Here are the rules for Event #2. Note we can use books that have been started before the read-a-thon, however we can't post our first task until October 5 at a specific time (time clocks not posted yet).

◈ Rules:

◈ Posting Days:
task #1:
October 5th
task #2: October 7th
task #3: October 9th
task #4: October 11th
task #5: October 13th

message 21: by Jenn (new)

Jenn (engelsigh) Sandy can the book I'm reading say for category 4 be finished before October 11? Like if I were reading Elegy (Hereafter #3) by Tara Hudson which is a ghost story and I finished on the 5th could it count for Supernatural Creatures or do I need to read something for task 2 or 3 before I move on to 4?

message 22: by SandyC (new)

SandyC (sandyc88) | 170 comments Yes, Jennifer, you can read your books any time during the challenge. We just need to post our tasks in order.

message 23: by Jenn (new)

Jenn (engelsigh) Ok for Task 2 I have Magnolias, Moonlight, and Murder (A Mom Zone Mystery #4) by Sara Rosett if you think that book is Halloweeny enough

SandyC (sandyc88) | 170 comments Jennifer wrote: "Ok for Task 2 I have Magnolias, Moonlight, and Murder (A Mom Zone Mystery #4) by Sara Rosett if you think that book is Halloweeny enough"

Yep, there's a Jack-O-Lantern, so definitely Halloween related!

message 25: by Jenn (new)

Jenn (engelsigh) You can also put me down for task 3 special abilities Kiss of Frost and that will be my line up for now. I'm sure I'll get through more than that but want to leave room for some other people

SandyC (sandyc88) | 170 comments Midu, we only need one book for Task #1, and I was going to useSalem's Lot. But, I can move that to Supernatural Creatures (Task #4) if you want to take task #1. Let me know.

We also already have 2 books for Task 2 Cover Hunt. I can move mine to the Spell It Out.

message 32: by SandyC (new)

SandyC (sandyc88) | 170 comments Amy, do you have books for the Spell It Out? If not, is there another Halloween-related word that would work better for you? We can be flexible. :-)

message 33: by Amy (new)

Amy H (twinypa) | 106 comments Yea I have books for the spell it out!

message 34: by SandyC (new)

message 38: by SandyC (new)

SandyC (sandyc88) | 170 comments We can also just go with who finishes their books first.

message 39: by Jenn (last edited Oct 04, 2013 10:23AM) (new)

Jenn (engelsigh) I finished Good Ghouls Do (Beth Frasier #2) by Julie Kenner that is 240 pages and works for the supernatural creatures category.

Working on Magnolias, Moonlight, and Murder (A Mom Zone Mystery #4) by Sara Rosett now.

message 40: by Amy (new)

Amy H (twinypa) | 106 comments Dont know where this fits but I finished Promise Me Something by Sara Kocek also you can add 311 pages completed for today I am still reading so I will let you know how much to add

message 41: by Jenn (new)

Jenn (engelsigh) Should I up my reading page goal? Or does it work better for the ratio thingy if we keep the goals low and read over?

Looking at last months reading, I can probably do 750 pages in a few days...

I don't think the page goal is something set in stone. We will be using actual pages read to factor into the ratio. The more pages we read, the better our score.
Our book goal doesn't change; it's what we decided at the beginning of the overall challenge.

Jenn (engelsigh) Amy wrote: "Dont know where this fits but I finished Promise Me Something by Sara Kocek also you can add 311 pages completed for today I am still reading so I will let you know how much to add"

We could use this in the spell it out under S for the author Sara Kocek

Jenn (engelsigh) Sandy wrote: "Thanks, Jennifer! You guys are fast!"

The book was an easy read...kind of a fluff book. So is the the one I'm currently reading.

message 50: by SandyC (last edited Oct 04, 2013 06:02PM) (new)

SandyC (sandyc88) | 170 comments Finished Salem's Lot for Task #1.
It wasn't nearly as creepy as I expected for a King book. I found the dated language/dialogue funny at times. Still, it's a classic!
