Erin Vastag Divergent! Way better character development and depth.

(Also loving the fact that it had no love triangle). I can't read love triangle books; it such a ridiculous plot device. It makes my eyes roll out the back of my head :P"

I totally agree. I am so sick of love triangles.

Julia Griffis - The Romance Bibliophile (theromancebibliophile) Definitely Divergent! The Hunger Games was really good too, though:)

message 59: by julia (new)

julia (julianevergrowup) THE HUNGER GAMES

The plot, setting, and characters are more interesting and original and just... better.

Also Suzanne Collins is a better writer.

message 60: by readeraz (last edited Jan 05, 2014 12:05PM) (new)

readeraz (zoethereader) | 474 comments Original? Suzanne got the idea from an ancient greek game played where two people (male and female) were picked to fight to the death.

message 61: by julia (new)

julia (julianevergrowup) example:

"If you take a person's memories, you change who they are." (page 100 of Allegiant)

Does anyone see what's wrong with this sentence?! (besides that it's proven to be a lie later in Allegiant)

message 62: by julia (new)

julia (julianevergrowup) But Veronica Roth most likely got her idea for a dystopian series from Suzanne Collins.

message 63: by readeraz (new)

readeraz (zoethereader) | 474 comments Oh and the characters in Divergent are much more interesting. They also developed so much more. AT LEAST DIVERGENT DIDN'T HAVE A LOVE TRIANGLE.

Four- character depth was incredible. Better than Peeta and Gale COMBINED. A strong male character who is broken at heart because his father was abusive to him. When he finally escaped his father, he joined the most dangerous faction. There he thrived and became the best.

Tris- went from being selfless and shy to BRAVE, KICK-A**, AND AMAZING. I have read both series entirely. Tris developed so much more than Katniss. (view spoiler)

There are almost completely different ideas. You've got to be kidding me, %99 of the people I have EVER asked about this subject have said that they are completely different.

message 65: by julia (new)

julia (julianevergrowup) I'm not crazy about love triangles either but I think the one in The Hunger Games was done successfully. And honestly, I couldn't stand Tris or Tobias/Four after Insurgent. I dislike Tobias still but I like Tris more now.

I think they are very different! And I agree. Divergent has way more developed characters!

message 67: by Rayline (new)

Rayline | 9 comments I liked both. Just wish the ending for the Divergent series was different.....

message 68: by [deleted user] (new)

Julia you are so so wrong! Successful love triangle? It's a bad LOVE triangle. Aerobics from Suzzane? Umm Veronica started writing divergent when she was in COLLEGE!!!

message 69: by [deleted user] (new)

Aerobics=ideas

message 70: by Noura (new)

Noura Omran | 12 comments Hmmm that's a tough one. I really enjoyed Hunger Games and I loved Catching Fire but then I hated Mockingjay. It was terrible and I was really really disappointed. Then we have Divergent, again I loved the first book, Insurgent was okay and then there was Allegiant which nearly made me hate the entire series. There were way too many new charecters, all the old ones just disappeared and really they were pissed that the memory serum was going to be used then turn around and use it themselves???

I don't know anymore. Allegiant was more of a letdown than Mockingjay. Both series disappointed me in the end :(

message 78: by Danna (new)

Danna (dannasia) | 17 comments I've read both series and loved them. I'm really into dystopian fiction. As most of you have pointed out, the endings were kinda disappointing but if I had to choose, I'd go for Divergent. I felt more connected with the characters than I did for HG. And of course, Tobias!!! :D

Divergent

message 80: by Cait (new)

Cait (caitolorca) | 4 comments I am definitely more of a Hunger Games fan. I liked Divergent, but struggled to finish Insurgent. I most likely won't bother with the third book of the series, I was just so disappointed with Insurgent. With THG, I've re-read the series a few times!

Lissette (liss4ever) Divergent!

message 85: by maisha (new)

maisha (maishareads) I just read Insurgent and I became IN LOVE with the series!! <3 :) But I really like The Hunger Games. The only thing is that Insurgent's plot is a little more developed.

message 86: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (reads4fun730) | 718 comments @ Cait. I felt the same way about Insurgent. Trust me your not missing anything by not reading Allegiant. Divergent was so good it was definitely disappointing that the other two books were complete let downs.

Ally Bryan (allysbookshoparoundthecorner) | 260 comments Divergent!!!!!

message 88: by Dalia (new)

Dalia | 71 comments The Hunger Games, the idea of it was way better than that of Divergent. I just thought the whole "choose a faction you belong to forever" was a bit silly...just my opinion

message 89: by Yu Fan (new)

Yu Fan (yufannx) | 240 comments Honestly I didn't like Divergent thát much, so I have to go with THG.

message 90: by Erica (new)

Erica (ericaevernight) I got spoiled in the D series, so I'm gunna go by book.

Divergent over Huger games

Catching Fire over Allegian

Divergent over Mockingjay

those are the ones id rather read

Charlotte O'dair Thorne Pedrad Valdez Lewis Steiner | 109 comments NO! HUNGER GAMES!
Veronica Roth kills off way too many characters, and although Suzanne Collins kills people off herself, it's like Veronica Roth decides; "Hmm, well I don't really need this character for the plot, so lets kill them off!" And Uriah's death KILLED ME inside. SHE RUINED HIS DEATH! By the time he ACTUALLY died, you feel like he's been dead for ages, because he HAS. Its awful. Although, Suzanne Collins did ruin Finnick's death, she wasn't Veronica Roth-y.

I have to actually disagree. Veronica does kill characters, but she kills them for a reason. The deaths all have a purpose, they are supposed to make you cry, or make you hurt. Suzanne Collins just decided to kill of Finnick and Prim in the last book for literally NO REASON. I didn't even cry during those scenes because I was freaking angry that she killed them for no reason. Also the deaths in Divergent are spread out. The deaths happen, and Veronica leaves pages and time for the characters to react and mourn. While Suzanne colins literally killed Finnick in one sentence. he died in one sentence.

Also Veronica is more consistent with her characters. Tris was strong from the first page of Divergent until the last page of Allegiant. And if anything, Tris got stronger as the books progressed. Also characters like Four and Uriah kept their strength in the books until the last pages. But in mocking jay Katniss really became much weaker. She was not strong like she was in the first two books. Also I also noticed major unnatural changes with Gale. Gale had been there for Katniss since they were young, he loved her, and then all of the sudden Suzanne completely changed his character! He starts acting like a jerk, and he "kills" Prim. the Gale in the first two books would NEVER do that.

message 100: by Beatrice (new)

Beatrice (beatricemasalunga) Divergent.

though the last book broke my heart and made me wept, it's written for a reason. It's all about sacrificing for your love ones. keeping them safe as much as possible.

though there are many ways to sacrifice yourself, but Tris was one of the best heroines ever.
