Can you believe 3/4 of the year is over? I hate the darkness coming so early now. But lots more time to read.

Now for this month's book themes:

1. Read a book by an author whose name starts with K.
2. Read a book whose title starts with K.
3. Since my favorite baseball team is in the playoffs and had a winning season for the first time in 21 years, read a book about pirates.
4. In honor of Halloween, read a book about ghosts.
5. Since Columbus landed in the New World (for good or bad) read a book about sailing.
6. Since there is a big (4-stories high) rubber duck sitting on the river in Pittsburgh, read a book about ducks.
7. With the new television season upon us (at least in the US), read a book about television.
8. Since it is Thanksgiving in Canada, read a book about something for which you are thankful.
9. Your choice.

That would be nice. The Pirates are on a roll. They play again on Tuesday in the wild card game.

The Dodgers will be facing the Atlanta Braves - should be a good series!

Colleen Mertens | 56 comments So for my pirate book, I read "Henry and the crazed chicken pirates" with my son Nathan. It is the sequel to "Henry and the Bucaneer Bunnies". In this book, Henry goes from just reading books to actually writing them. It is interesting to see the product of Henry's work. Really cute kids book.

Rachel Paradise Valley (Daughters of Caleb Bender, #1) by Dale Cramer 10-1-13
This was a decent historical Amish novel. It was interesting, but I'm not sure how well I care for Cramer's writing style. I did enjoy the plot and characters, however.

message 10: by Rachel (new)

Rachel June (Brides of the West, #2) by Lori Copeland 10-2-13
This was a fun, well-written novel with great characters. I really enjoyed June's story, and I found some of her predicaments to be highly entertaining.

message 11: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Hope (Brides of the West, #3) by Lori Copeland 10-3-13
This novel was well-written and entertaining. The characters are well developed, and I adored Hope and her story. Many of her predicaments were hysterical, and I was so happy with how it ended.

message 12: by Rachel (new)

Rachel Brides of the West Glory, Ruth and Patience (Brides of the West #4-6) by Lori Copeland 10-7-13
I really enjoyed these last three books of Lori Copeland's Brides of the West series. The plots were fun and amusing at times while providing action and clean romance. I did feel, however, that these main characters weren't developed as well as her previous three Kallahan sisters: Faith, June, and Hope. Even so, they are good reads, and I plan to look for her spin-off series called Men of the Saddle sometime.

"The Leftovers" by Tom Perrotta

message 14: by Chuck (new)

Chuck | 132 comments Finished reading for October's book club selection "The Art of Fielding" by Chad Harbach - 4/5 stars.

Now reading "The Leftovers" by Tom Perrotta.

"What if—whoosh, right now, with no explanation—a number of us simply vanished? Would some of us collapse? Would others of us go on, one foot in front of the other, as we did before the world turned upside down? That’s what the bewildered citizens of Mapleton, who lost many of their neighbors, friends and lovers in the event known as the Sudden Departure, have to figure out. Because nothing has been the same since it happened—not marriages, not friendships, not even the relationships between parents and children."

Rachel Once Upon a Prince by Rachel Hauck 10/8/13
This was a well-written, sweet novel. I loved the characters, and the story was a fun modern-style fairy tale.

message 16: by Rachel (new)

Rachel The Orchid House by Lucinda Riley 10/12/13
I really loved this novel. It was well-written, the various plot lines were tied together so well, and the characters came alive and were brilliant. The differing points-of-view explaining the family history and its secrets were seamlessly woven into the main narrative. The plot had so many twists and turns, I was almost constantly surprised. It is definitely a new favorite novel and a new author that I plan to read more from.

"The Leftovers" by Tom Perrotta

message 18: by Chuck (new)

Chuck | 132 comments Almost completed "The Leftovers" by Tom Perrotta. Now reading "Never Coming to a Theatre Near You" by Kenneth Turan.

"It is in the nature of today's movie business that while Hollywood blockbusters invade every megaplex, smaller, quality films often don't get screen time. Fans of finer films have to count on catching up with them on video and DVD, but even the most hard-core devotees have trouble remembering what sounded good when a film was originally released. Never Coming to a Theater Near You will remedy that situation. This selection of renowned film critic Kenneth Turan's absorbing and illuminating reviews, now revised and updated to factor in the tests of time, point viewers toward the films they can't quite remember, but should not miss.

Moviegoers know they can trust Turan's impeccable taste. His eclectic selection represents the kind of sophisticated, adult, and entertaining films intelligent viewers are hungry for. More importantly, Turan shows readers what makes these unusual films so great, revealing how talented filmmakers and actors have managed to create the wonderful highs we experience in front of the silver screen."

Includes reviews of "Devil In A Blue Dress," Groundhog Day," "Whale Rider," and many others.

Rachel Blue Moon by Luanne Rice 10/14/13
This was an interesting novel once the story truly got started, and the characters were well developed, but there were some raunchy scenes in the novel that didn't even add anything to the plot--they were just random and unnecessary. So, I liked the novel, but it wasn't great.

Chuck | 132 comments Now reading "77 shadow street" by Dean Koontz.

"The Pendleton stands on the summit of Shadow Hill at the highest point of an old heartland city, a Gilded Age palace built in the late 1800s as a tycoon’s dream home. Almost from the beginning, its grandeur has been scarred by episodes of madness, suicide, mass murder, and whispers of things far worse. But since its rechristening in the 1970s as a luxury apartment building, the Pendleton has been at peace. For its fortunate residents—among them a successful songwriter and her young son, a disgraced ex-senator, a widowed attorney, and a driven money manager—the Pendleton’s magnificent quarters are a sanctuary, its dark past all but forgotten.

But now inexplicable shadows caper across walls, security cameras relay impossible images, phantom voices mutter in strange tongues, not-quite-human figures lurk in the basement, elevators plunge into unknown depths. With each passing hour, a terrifying certainty grows: Whatever drove the Pendleton’s past occupants to their unspeakable fates is at work again. Soon, all those within its boundaries will be engulfed by a dark tide from which few have escaped."

Rachel Secrets Over Sweet Tea by Denise Hildreth Jones 10/16/13
So, I picked up this one assuming it was going to be a light-hearted Christian chick flick as are most of the Christian books set in the south with colorful southern characters, but it turned out to deal very well with some serious and difficult topics while still having some of those flamboyant southern characters that make such books so much fun. It was well written, the characters were awesome, and several difficult issues were dealt with in a Christian manner. I really loved it.

message 23: by Rachel (new)

Rachel The Icecutter's Daughter (Land of Shining Water, #1) by Tracie Peterson 10/18/13
This was a well-written novel with awesome characters. I really enjoyed the twists and turns of the story, and I loved how the truth won in the end. It definitely made my favorites list.

message 24: by Rachel (new)

Rachel All the Tea in China by Jane Orcutt 10/21/13
I really enjoyed this novel, and I found the characters sweet even though they are highly flawed. It's written fairly well although I would say that there were some loose ends left hanging after the end of the novel. And I definitely found it amusing that she was so convinced that she was to be a missionary in China based on such superficial things, and I really liked how God made her know that she was sent after Phinneas for love and not for the sake of the Gospel. I liked it a lot.

For Julia Bishop is the partner of his best friend and fellow 'smoke jumper', Ed Tully. Rachel Her Mother's Hope (Marta's Legacy, #1) by Francine Rivers 10/23/13
This was a really well-written novel that did a really brilliant job of portraying mother-daughter, grandmother-granddaughter relationships. The men in the story were also drawn really well. I really loved the novel.

Colleen Mertens | 56 comments So I took a really long time to read this month. I read "I, Jedi". It is one of the many Star Wars books out there. It focuses more on characters found in books and not the movies. I liked it but it wasn't one of my favorites in the series. I did like seeing how an x-wing pilot turns into a Jedi. I thought some of the characters involved were interesting. A good read for Star Wars fanatics.

I went to Romanticon and still am having problems coming back to reality after 2 weeks. I had a great time. I love being surrounded by authors and books. The one book I can heartily recommend it The Good Thief by Hannah Tinti. It's about Ren, an orphan, and how he is taken out of the orphanage. It is a great read and a perfect book club read. There is a lot to talk about in it.

Rachel The Passion of Artemisia by Susan Vreeland 10/26/13
I have found every book written by Susan Vreeland to be extremely interesting and entertaining. Her writing style is very good, and her characters are well presented. I always learn some interesting information about the historical characters she bases her characters on as well as the real artwork she talks about. I didn't care for this plot as much, however, thus giving this novel four stars rather than five.

message 32: by Chuck (new)

Chuck | 132 comments I decided to read "The Butter Battle Book" by Dr. Seuss only because it was referred to in "The Smoke Jumper" by Nicholas Evans. Boy, was I surprised!

This story certainly is different from other Dr.Suess books that we read when we were youngsters. This one is very serious as it illustrates the Yooks and Zooks developing weapons of war to outdo each other until the ultimate weapon of war is created by both sides.

message 33: by Rachel (new)

Rachel While We Were Watching Downton Abbey by Wendy Wax 10/29/13
This was a well-done novel. It's written well and has a good balance of fun and serious. However, I disliked how some things aren't explained very well or left hanging at the end.

message 34: by Colleen (new)

Colleen Mertens | 56 comments Well, I finished reading "The Almond Tree" which I won in a Goodreads contest. It dealt with the Israeli - Palestinian conflict from the Palestinian side of things. I thought the characters were interesting, especially Ichmad. There is much growth as a person. The overall themes of the book had much to do with getting to know people and treating them as people. Moving beyond stereotypes to actual relationships. It was well written and thought provoking.
