October Group Read #1: Tankbread

It's clear that you have a story which is meant to push buttons.
I did vote for your book in the BOTM.
For every story there is an intended audience.
The zombies genre has a wide variety of nitches (subgroups).
I am more than willing to share my love/enjoyment of the zombies genre with you.
I'm not sure why you are following this BOTM so closely. It must be a bit brutal. Kinda like watching sausage getting made.
So...
Let me break my normal pattern of reviewing a bit with you here and give you a sneak peek into my back thoughts.
My final thoughts on this book are not concrete at this time yet normally, when I give a book a low review I try to include some positive attributes of the story in that review.
(Also normally I do not have an author looking over my shoulder either. Which is kinda creeping me out a bit.)
So Here is what I appreciate in this story:
As I've stated before (repeatedly) IMHO the zombies genre is more about putting the characters in extreme circumstances moral fear/ personal crisis/ lack of proper social structure/limited time-resources at are not likely to be found in other genre, and from there examining the morals (message)..... Love always wins, or mankind as a whole is (_) or whatever the author is trying to say.
Well this story hits that square on the head.
I might not appreciate the characters or the world setting (and yes that takes away from my enjoyment of the read) but as a zombie book, it's valid.
I am more of a hopeful kind of gal. I like more characters substance. I'd like to get the message a bit more.
But please don't take my views too seriously. I am just one reader, no one special.

:-) well a BOTM does get kinda messy.
Oh by the way, Randy cheated he read ahead of the assignment I think he should keep getting extra questions on the next pop quiz.

Huh? I already added one to this pop quiz. :)

I don't know where ya'll got the impression that Mods are human."
OH NO, GUYS!!! Liz has went Zom on us! She said it herself!!! :-P

#1: I am leaning towards the general consensus of Port Germein. It seems sooo idyllic. I love Daisy Mae, but I gotta say, I love, love, love their 're-enactment' of Ghostbusters on page 123-124. I think that is their own little way of trying to preserve what culture they had left. They also manage to be friendly, welcoming, and seem to have their town under good control. Tammy: I think if you are looking for a 'moral' community or component in this piece, here's as close as you are going to get. And, as Randy mentioned, it DOES make sense to get food from the sea. I'm absolutely positive there are some decent little band of survivors somewhere in the vast hinterlands of Australia, but we haven't seen them yet (if we even will). Its been a little while since I finished up this portion, but what about Bad Dog killing those crazy monster children right in front of their mother??? NOT HAWK-HEAD, but the OTHER monster children? CRAZY!!! I read a book once, Savage Girls and Wild Boys: A History of Feral Children, and children DO seem to go feral VERY quickly. It was the mother's job to give them a moral compass, and she failed in every sense of the word. So, I guess what I'm getting at, is that there have been several bands of survivors/communities, but none of them were places I'D wanna be, except Port Germein.
#2. I HAVE NO STINKIN CLUE!!! This is what makes me want to read on so bad (which I did, and now I have a little more info on this, but I'm not gonna say anything :-)...it'll be for next time!) But at the end of Ch. 22, the evol connection could really be going anywhere. We don't really get much foreshadowing on why the would be following our duo, what they could want with them, or even WHO they are following (Bad Dog or Else?). Keep reading, guys!
#3. Else's attachment is completely expected by me. It's the oldest one in the book! Little girls always seem to look up to their daddies. I see their relationship in terms of father/daughter. But Else just doesn't understand her feelings. She is a fully fledged woman, but has a child's mind. And I agree with the general consensus once again, that Else's development seems a bit..well...a bit 'rocky'? I don't know HOW to explain it, but its like she takes 2 steps back for every one she takes forward. Sometimes she seems WAY smart, and I feel like she is finally fully developed, but then she says something utterly juvenile, and I throw my hands in the air like "Whaaa...????" Please, can someone remind me if we were told that Tankbread's cognitive ability diminishes towards the end of their shelf life? I'm all but POSITIVE the text said so, but Else hasn't even fully matured. Good god...she can't backslide very far! She's not developed enough to begin with... But in short, I DO feel as though Else's attachment is 'normal' and 'expected.' My mother passed when I was still young, and I became VERY possessive of my father. Only problem is, she clearly thinks Haumann is her dad, and Bad Dog is what? He is quite obviously being a father figure to her, but whether she actually thinks they will be 'more than that' is still unknown at this point. I DO give Bad Dog props for NOT taking advantage of her. That's clearly Lizzy's job :-(
#4. I didn't really catch a whole lot of love interests in this section. Lizzy's relationship with Bad Dog could HARDLY be considered love. I guess in a way, I DO see the sex between Lizzy and Bad Dog as expected, but not at the same time. Can you tell I have conflicted feelings over this reading??? ;-) Anyway, the way Lizzy acted, I would have NEVER guessed she was a virgin. Sure, during an apocalyptic situation, people's moral compasses go ndownhill quick, but this was definitely a WTF? moment. Yes, I get it...some sexual healing is good for the soul. But with a TOTAL stranger, after 5 MINUTES, when you were a VIRGIN????? Seeing as how all her experience with sex was by watching her ma & pa, I'm thinking maybe that's why they got eaten...too busy screwing!!! Yeah, sex during the zom-pocalpyse WOULD be nice. But all the time...everyday??? Fortify, people! Round up supplies! ANYTHING but laying in a coital embrace all day! Lizzy musta been watching VERY close, which is DISGUSTING on SOOOOOOO many levels, because she never winced, never showed any pain or discomfort, and seemed to be porn-star level pro. I just find that HIGHLY unbelievable for a virgin. I definitely agree with Ms. Tammy on this one- Bad Dog's 'promise' to take her along sheerly to make her have sex with him again is DESPICABLE. I understand the motivation, but damn! Don't be such a chauvinist, BD!!!
#5. Whoa! The cliffhanger! Who KNOWS what's gonna happen??? (well, I do lol, but I cheated and read ahead!). Still, at this point, I felt 'Ah, FINALLY, our 2 heroes have found a tiny little safehold to replenish their strength for a few days.' Then, when Bad Dog was speculating on just how to be able to explain to Else just what 'cannibals' are, I thought 'uh-oh,' then they turned out to just be pigs, and I was like "Phew!" (And then I was like, and then I was like...ugh...sorry for so many 'and then I was like's in there, but that IS what my thought process did). Then...BAM!!!! Lights out!!! What's gonna happen???? It WAS a great cliffhanger...that's what made so many of us want to read on. Good job on the author's part!!! Like either Randy or Tammy said, obviously our protagonists will make it, somehow, someway, but we don't know how yet.
#6. (Randy's question) NO!!! Don't get uppity on us, Tammy! Although 'uppity' wouldn't be the word
I'd use to describe you, Tammy. More like incredibly passionate in your reading, which is a great thing! Stay that way!!! ;-)

NO!!!! I don't wanna go to detention!!! :-P
Elizabeth wrote: "I totally thought it was pretty convenient that suddenly it's just the two of them again. I was just starting to really enjoy the idea that there would be a bigger group for a while when BLAMMO! n..."
Same here...I wanted a bigger group, but we got stripped of that REAL quick...
Also, Randy mentioned Soo Yong. I'm all but positive he will pop up again, at least I hope so, so we can have some answers!
Elizabeth wrote: I'm quite frustrated with this. There doesn't seem to be a growth pattern. Now, I understand that there are some intuitive leaps made by kids during their development, but this is so wildly inconsistent to me. I understand that her learning is possibly accelerated by having a super soldier brain or whatever the deal is - but I want to follow that logically....."
NO KIDDING!!! I just wanna see her 'grow up.' As I mentioned...for every step forward, she takes two back. It IS becoming very frustrating!!! BUT...on page 159, Else drives the train herself, and tells Bad Dog she knows how because "I watched Harris. He does the same thing every time." She learns just like a child, by observation. Maybe THAT'S why she doesn't seem to 'get' complex emotion...
Elizabeth wrote: "I'm not generally squeamish, particularly if it fits the story, but this all seemed quite disjointed, awkward and pointless. ..."
I feel the exact same way. Why even put Lizzy in the story when she is dead in the next chapter? We could have went without Lizzy and without Hawk-Head and his freaks. The best part of that whole scene was when Bad Dog says "There is no help. Not for you. Not for any of us. We're all just doing what we can to survive," as he plunges the knife into Hawk-Head. But those are still some SERIOUSLY twisted little freaks!!!
Tammy K. wrote: "Like when Else and Mad Dog discussed death? ..."
You're calling him 'Mad Dog' now lol...hey...if the shoe fits, right? :-)

Usually I would blame my tablet's auto-correct function, but I recall typing Mad.
What I can say, brain freeze I guess. :)
Teresa, I had forgotten about the ghost-buster play at Port Germein. I suppose that was the more "normal" town?
The town of Port Germein seemed to fly by in my memory.
It was however where Else does the swan dive into the zombies.
The Ghostbusters re-enactment was one of my favourite parts. Somehow I had forgotten that they had no power, so I was quite taken aback when it was like a play.
The diving into the zombies isn't making any sense either. Why did she do that? Why could they get away so easily? Why didn't they eat at least one of them? I mean, if they're after BD, they should have eaten the tasty Tankbread. If they're after Else, BD should have been OM NOM NOM ZOMBIE CHOW. But no. They both escaped unscathed - AND THEN it wasn't really discussed, or explained. If my little Tanky had just leapt into a horde of scary zombies, I would want to know why. In depth. Wouldn't you? Especially to make sure it's not going to happen again?
Back to Else. On the one hand, Else doesn't seem to "get" complex emotion, and then on the other hand, she somehow not only "knows" about the sexcapade with Lizzy, but she also "knows" what it means? Booooo.
I'm still really annoyed by the whole Lizzy thing.
As to the cliffhanger - well, I read ahead too. I was in the bath, and I totally lost track of what I was doing. Whoops.
I will admit - I was quite disappointed when he was whacked on the head. It was a neat little fake-out for a minute - OH NOES! WHO ARE THESE STRANGERS! OH WAIT IT'S OK - and now we sort of seem to be back to the stereotype.
As irritated as I am with some of these weirdnesses, I'm still finding it quite readable. So kudos to you, Paul, if you're still watching the sausage-making.

As much as I'm complaining about things, I'm still enjoying the read.
And I agree with your complaints:
-- The mosh pit dive better be explained
-- Else is an emotional mess (to be expected, I guess), but from exactly what? Just how psychic is she?
-- All of the Lizzy scenes were just, um, awkward. Same with Gordon, more or less.

Page 130
'' I can hear them,'' she whispered. Her fingers curled around the strands of wire. Layer upon layer of chicken wire and any other mesh fence they could find meant that even a snake couldn't get through.
''You'll get used to it. They'll bugger off in a few days. They get distracted and just shuffle away.''
''It's not like that. I hear voices, all saying something, but I don't understand.''
''Hold your positions. Tony, go tell Daisy-Mae.''
We stopped as the kid in the fish leather pants slid down a scaffolding pole and scampered off into town.
"I need to seem (see) them,'' Else pulled her arm away and quickly flitted up the nearest ladder. .....

I found one reference to 30 days but its in chapter 24, we haven't gotten that far yet.
There could be another reference earlier when Josh was confessing? But I did not know enough keywords to find it.
Anyway here is the page for you
Chapter 24 page page 182

Ya know, the pun never hit me until I read that. I had never said the title out loud.
Did we lose Netanella? Haven't seen anything from her lately.

Elizabeth, I'm not one for tattling but Randy says that Netanella hasn't completed the assignment.

Tammy, thanks for that block of quote...I had forgotten that she DID say she 'heard them.'
And Elizabeth, it DOESN'T make sense that the evols are not eating either one or the other of our protagonists.
I'm loving how lively this discussion is going! You guys are awesome :-)
The next chunk of reading holds some answers, believe you me! ;-)
Happy Reading, all!
Netanella is now a name on the chalkboard.
Tsk tsk tsk. Who knew Zombies! members would be so naughty?
Tammy, you're on there too. For tattling.

You know, I get that she went up there because she heard them... but that inspired her to zombie-surf because...? It's just not flying for me. She needs to see them, she sees them, she dives...
sigh
I'll go re-read it again and see if it jives for me this time.

Me?¿

I can't recall which book it was but I recall reading one where the girl got bite but didn't turn.
She was connected to the zombies and could tell the to move and .....
Oh I recall the book name now. It was After (The Phoenix curse, 1) by D.R. Johnson Good book by the way and it's one that is always free foe the kindle edition.
Anyway, I was going to say that Else connection with the zombies might make her able to control them.
As Teresa keeps hinting but not yet boldly stating,Else is probably a hybrid.
I'd go with the hybrid theory. Or something resembling a hybrid.
I'm a bit twitchy. Up to chapter 34, and at loose ends now. Sighhhhh.
I'm a bit twitchy. Up to chapter 34, and at loose ends now. Sighhhhh.
Oh but wait. There was no mention of her controlling the evols to keep them from eating BD. Unless we want to go with it being subconscious. Because she luuuuurves him.
Great Galloping Hordes, it must be time for me to go to bed.

Who uses a chalkboard anymore? I'm a firm believer in stickys
Yellow for remember
Pink for late bills that need to be paid next.
Lime green for very important!
Blue for get off the chalkboard free pass.
I got lots of blue stickies!
Blue stickys doesn't work on Canadians. We work on bacon, beer and coffee. Chocolate doesn't hurt either.
Oh, and this weeknd is our Thanksgiving. So I wouldn't say no to pumpkin pie, extra whipped cream.
Holy moly I'm hungry now.

I've already got a pumpkin pie, cool whip and mini pumpkin muffins in my refrigerator.
Pumpkin pie is one of my most favorite pies.

I heard somewhere it's never wise to give a Canadian beer.

Anywho, I'm up to the end of the assignment, and, surprisingly, no farther. I had to take a slight break from this book today so I read 'Alice In Zombieland.' Its almost 1A.M. here and I just woke up for a tinkle in the middle of the night, so I'm going back to my family in bed :-)
I guess what I'm trying to say is that if questions go up tonite, I won't be awake to answer them...tomorrow A.M. is already mostly dedicated to errands (UGH), and a 12 hour shift starting at 2:00 P.M. I try and participate as much as possible, but sometimes we are too busy. I'm sure I can at least fit in some responses, just maybe not full answers. So, once again, long story short, I MAY be too time crunched to answer the questions in depth until Sat. morning :-( (but I REALLY don't see me being that delayed, but you can never tell with gamblers...)
Can you draw a picture of someone who rambles on and on? ;-)

Sorry I missed out on a whole discussion, but I'm ready for the next part ... I'll take that Canadian beer, by the way.

I want you to know that it was Randy who squealed on you :-0
He even got me on the chalkboard!
I think I managed to get myself off the chalkboard.
I'm not sure how you'll get off it, but if I were you I'd blame Randy.
It usually works for me :-)

I looked at a couple websites but most of them are "user provided" information, so take the validity at that value.

In short, it was a foreigner nation verse of american western movies that was "adapted" for the foreign nations viewing audiences preferences.
They were popular in their nations of origin from 1960 - the mid 70's.
They were not received well world wide.
In my preteen years my grandfather lived with us for a couple years until he moved into assisted living. I tell you this because it will help explain my next statement.
I have watched countless world war 2 and other war movies. The same goes with western movies. If it started John Wayne I've seen it!
My Grandfather had Lou Garrett's disease and was legally blind (meaning not totally blind, but with significant vision loss to prevent him from being able to drive a car or reading anything not in large print).
His whole life he loved to read, and once we were old enough he drafted us into reading to him. Usually western cowboy books, from authors like Louis L'Amour , Elmore Leonard and Zane Gray.
Fortunately, spaghetti westerns were not on his favories list.
It is a style that I have never been exposed to and will henceforth avoid.

Many were based on Japanese movies. A lot of westerns of that era were.
For example, A Fistful of Dollars was based on Yojimbo (a better film), and The Magnificent Seven was based on Seven Samurai.
Human interaction and relationships of power transcend cultures.
Even the post-apocalypse movie Omega Doom was based on Yojimbo to some degree.
Good news! There was a time/space rift, caused by the delicious justaposition of bacon, chocolate and coffee, and the chalkboard has been completely erased! HUZZAH!
And don't worry. I brought my own beer.
Randy, I've noticed, is pretty much always to blame.
How did we get onto spaghetti westerns? My favourite is a space spaghetti western TV series called Firefly, which was, sadly, cancelled after only one short season. Epic sadness. :(

So! We're heading into the last part of the book. Lots happened in this last section. Here are your questions!
1) Else seemed to deteriorate quite quickly and suddenly, but was miraculously saved by the Dr they were hunting for. She's now extremely long-lived because of the genetic changes he's made, but with his death and the loss of the facility, she's the only Tankbread who will be altered this way. What do you think this means for the rest of the book?
2) BD now has/had another "love interest". Or rather, another sexual relatonship. How does this fit into the rest of the story? Is there significance to the fact that she'll be trying to implement a breeding program?
3) BD makes an offhand comment about having babies with Else. Does he really intend to follow through? Or was this a rather bizarre slip of the tongue?
4) What just happened with the nuns? Is their sudden attitude change consistent with the overall thrust of the book?
5) Did anyone else notice the (presumably) Biblical reference to Else writing "something" on the ground with a stick? (The relevant passage is John 8:1-11. I include this link for ease of reference: http://www.biblegateway.com/passage/?...) What is the author's intent?
6) Are there certain issues or events that stood out to you in this section? Do they contribute or detract from your enjoyment of the book?
7) As we head into the final section, what questions do you have that you hope will be answered?
8) What do you expect the end game to be? Go ahead and speculate!

Way cool about the chalkboard!
Elizabeth said " Randy, I've noticed, is pretty much always to blame."
That's the way I play it too. He is a great sport, though sometimes he comes back with comments I have to Google!
You never know that that boy will say next :-)
Elizabeth said " How did we get onto spaghetti westerns?"
See Paul's comment in message #69
2. "Bad Dog" (great name btw) doesn't have a backstory. He is a spaghetti Western style of anti-hero. No background and maybe no name. In the revised edition I added 10 years to his age (so he is now 39, instead of 29) because he seems older and reader feedback said that his comment he was 19 when it all started seems odd.
I'll get on the questions in a bit. I just got home from shopping with my sister. I need to eat quickly I'm getting dizzy from low blood sugar.

Tammy...hope you are okay, dear! Get that blood sugar up! ;-)

I've got game night, tonight with the rummy girls.
Question 1: I thought the whole "healing" of Else was underwritten and cheap.
We (the readers) spend the whole book worried, well not worried but dealing with the fact that Else was on a limited time.
On page 181 Else finally gets in front of the first doctor (shingh). Page 182 Doctor Wainright shows up.
{We pause to stroke the ego of Mad Dog while he has sex yet again from pages 182-183 Woo Hoo! How exciting... NOT!}
Then in the most ANTI-CLIMATIC way (pun intended) On page 186, Dr Wainright casually announces that they have "removed the terminator sequences off her DNA and she should out live us all."
Wow, talk about a moment lost. I could go on there but eh.
Question 2: Bad Dog and the breeding program... Deep Sigh! and an eye roll. Seriously Paul!!?
You went there?!
Not going to say anything else.
Question 3: BD makes an offhand comment about having babies with Else.. Given how low this story has sunk into the gutter. YUP, he meant it. Pervert that he is.
Question 4: What just happened with the nuns?
There is a comment on one website (that I found but did not post here) about Spaghetti Western characters having little or no moral consistency and that most of the secondary characters die in the story. And a large amount of Violence, for the sake of violence.
The nuns changing who they were leans towards the spaghetti western theme, as I understand it.
As I said before, now that I know that this is a sub-genre of westerns, I will be avoiding them (especially the ones made overseas) as they are not my kind of book.
Question 5: Did anyone else notice the (presumably) Biblical reference to Else writing "something" on the ground with a stick?
(Page 226 for Teresa)
I did not get what Else was writing.
The whole scene seemed little more then a hissy fit, done to make the women folk look petty while the man folk got his smile and a pat on the back. Go man folk!
Although, that does serve to illustrate my point that I made in the beginning that the women characters are nothing but side kicks, sex toys, and accessories for Mad Dog.
Still think this story isn't Extremely sexist? or Extremely Crass?
Question 6: Are there certain issues or events that stood out to you in this section? Do they contribute or detract from your enjoyment of the book?
"Next page, more of the same."
Nothing new.
Zero character development/growth.
Was Mad Dog sitting by Else side waiting for her to recover? No, he was out screwing Donna.
Now, if that does not spell love, I do not know what does?
Has Else matured? Nope.
She can now read books, ask questions and stand herself as an authority on religion, but still talks like a child and wants to have Mad Dogs babies. Gag Me with A Spoon Already!
Question 7: As we head into the final section, what questions do you have that you hope will be answered?
Can we just end the BOTM here? Must we read on?
Question 8: What do you expect the end game to be? Go ahead and speculate!
I repeat, "Next page, more of the same."

Tammy...hope you are okay, dear! Get that b..."
I do this to myself all the time. I know better, Diabetes runs in my family (grandfather, mother, twin brother).
I tend to skip over a solid breakfast and just have a cup of coffee on my way out the door. By the time the hunger kicks in it's after 2PM and by that time I am usually too sick and shaky to eat.

And the "spaghetti" part of the Western was due to the Italian film crew, not the "on top of ol' smokey, all covered with cheese" that my brother misinformed me in his usual cheeky demeanor.

The "fix" did seem pretty quick, for others not to have done it before. I would have expected there to be severe side effects.
2) BD now has/had another "love interest".
Better tell the sheep to watch their back. BD is on the prowl.
A breeding program seems kind of irrelevant, given their ability to grow TankBreads.
3) BD makes an offhand comment about having babies with Else.
I was kind of hoping it would go that way, but after all of BD's sexual romps, Else deserves better.
I no longer understand what is driving BD in the story. All of the structured groups they've been to are now in ruins.
4) What just happened with the nuns?
It's hard to judge. We really have only interacted with the leader, who seems to be relatively unstable. All the others seem to just follow whatever she decides upon.
5) Did anyone else notice the (presumably) Biblical reference to Else writing "something" on the ground with a stick?
Got by me.
6) Are there certain issues or events that stood out to you in this section?
The Port Germain visit. How the heck does a plane show up to destroy their wall?
7) As we head into the final section, what questions do you have that you hope will be answered?
Who the heck is controlling the evols?
8) What do you expect the end game to be? Go ahead and speculate!
At this point, I haven't a clue.
There doesn't really seem to be anyone left, except for Soo-Yong and evols.

The pace of the story is continuing, quite rapidly, I might add. The whole episode with "Leandro the Greek, his Lover, and the Pigs" was entirely surreal - where did that come from? and how did it resolve so quickly? And then, wham, bang, thank you ma'am, and Else and BD are in Woomera, get deloused, Else gets de--terminated, and BD gets a new lover and more boners for Else. Wow. Just wow. My head is spinning like Linda Blair's, I'm having such a hard time keeping up.
I think I'll go load up "For a Few Dollars More" on Netflix.
Still loving this book, though. So, yes, Tammy, we must finish. It's a completest thing. How else will know if BD and Else finally get to make babies? :)
