Casey | 654 comments What about random stuff found on T & V's desk? Granted, mailing physical items means postage so you wouldn't want this to become counterproductive, but it might be kind of cool.

OH MY WORD A MILLION TIMES YES.

Jacob Lawrence | 60 comments I have noticed a common trend in Kickstarters were people are included in the credits. Essentially, individuals that pledge over a certain amount will be included under a donor section or special thanks portion of the credits after the video ends, for the entirety of the season. Freddie Wong and a few other youtubers who use crowdfunding to create content utilize this to thank their fans and supporters, while also reinforcing the idea that they were a factor in completing the project.

Valerie | 63 comments I think Sword and Laser Flagons. Or Steins.

Casey | 654 comments Can Veronica or Tom Knit us S&L stocking hats or scarves? :)

Casey wrote: "Can Veronica or Tom Knit us S&L stocking hats or scarves? :)"

Haha, I would love a S&L knit hat but I can just imagine the poor person stuck making them hunched over knitting needles for hours on end to make dozens of the darn things.

Serendi | 848 comments Nah. Knitting machines. Create a template, then GO for it!

(Note, I don't actually think T&V *should* go for it, just that knitting machines are way cool. Used to know someone who had one.)

message 59: by Casey (new)

Casey | 654 comments I'd be pretty-dern-content with some hand-knit S&L wool socks?

wonders if Veronica and Tom still want suggestions? :)

I'd second that too.

The Kickstarter will launch this coming week. Not all of the rewards suggested could be done right off because of costs or difficulty. But we incorporated a lot of them in and we'll add some others if we get our first goal. Probably not socks. But wow that would be cool. Just a lot of knitting.

That first goal will be $20,000 to do six authors guide episodes. I know that sounds like a lot but there's a lot of costs associated with doing the video the way we did. Watch the credits to see all the people involved and know they're all underpaid. We're asking for money to do the show professionally on the set with Lem. You've seen the google handouts we've done and you've the seen the show on the set. That difference is where the money goes.

We'll start a thread in here too where you can ask more questions once it's launched. Just wanted to start your minds thinking towards the actual thing happening! We're super excited about it. And nervous.

The backing ideas here were fantastic and really helped a lot! Thanks all who gave ideas!!

message 62: by Casey (new)

Casey | 654 comments Can't wait!
Just out of curiosity, what would the backer-level be for those hypothetical V&T-knit wool socks/scarf/stocking hat?

message 63: by Rasnac (new)

Rasnac | 336 comments Just promise to do the "Young Frankestein" song and dance routine when you reach the goal and I guarantee you'll get the funding for a 100 episodes :D

Will it be possible to donate from overseas?

Yes. The dance routine!

Edited to add:
Kickstarter handles oversea backers. If there were physical rewards, then it would be up to Veronica and Tom to decide how they will handle the oversea shipping.

message 65: by Alexander (new)

Alexander (technogoth) | 171 comments I think a dance routine at different funding levels would be hilarious. Maybe they get the whole production stuff to do the thriller dance, or a rocky horror tribute.

Casey | 654 comments Looks good. I think that jumping from $500 to $3,000 is a pretty big step, you may want to add a few tiers between these. Are you going to supply any stretchgoals along the way?

Yeah if we get the first goal we'll stretch goal to 12 episodes. We also have some other rewards in reserve to add along the way if we need them.

message 71: by Alexander (new)

Alexander (technogoth) | 171 comments It looks good, but I can't help but feel its targeted at mainly existing fans. Why not use the opportunity to promote the show and entice new fans?

Provide links to the goodreads group, the sword and laser website, links to the podcast and first season. Maybe even highlight the most popular episodes to give people a better idea of what they can expect.

Also if you already have at least some of the six authors lined up then you should showcase them on the kickstarter page. Give people a taste of what's coming and then leave them hungry for more.

Casey | 654 comments Okay, cool. It looks like you've got this about handled.
You'll want to address shipping and handling, both for US and international, just to make sure everyone is on the same page.
To me, $200 seems high for getting a question asked. What about dropping this down to $100?

We really only expect to get money from existing fans. It's not good recruitment to say, "hey interested in something you've never heard of? Wanna give me money?" heh heh.

But the links are a very good idea. Adding them now.

Shipping is all sorted. We have a guy. He came up with the amounts. Not to worry.

We had it lower but it was suggested that it was too low at that point. We'll see how it goes. Like I said we have some other levels int here as well. Remember, it's a GUARANTEED question plus all the other stuff.

Oh and we don't have any authors lined up yet.

Rob (quintessential_defenestration) | 1035 comments The names are fantastic!

message 77: by Casey (new)

Casey | 654 comments Below the video-intro that you and Veronica do, could you guys put together a thirty-forty second video clip of the "best of" S&L? You've had some great moments:
* Veronica fainting before George R. R. interview
* George R. R. grumbling about Ant Man.
* Pat Rothfuss eating cake (and I think drinking beer)

I know there's a lot more, but having a clip of these "shining moments" might get folks charged up.

I'll keep quiet now, didn't mean to bogart the thread.

message 78: by Erik (new)

Erik Redin (erik_redin) | 149 comments My guess is the $100 level will probably be the sweet spot for most donors, given you get the t-shirt, the bookmarks, and the anthology.

I wonder if instead of having two separate rewards at the $100 level, the "pick a book" level should be increased and then include the t-shirt and anthology on that level as well. Maybe like a $175 level? I just have a feeling people are going to want to do the pick AND get the t-shirt and anthology, rather than having to choose between the two rewards.

message 79: by Rob, Roberator (new)

Rob (robzak) | 7205 comments Mod
Do you plan to have more details on the shirts/poster/photo before you launch? Like how big of a poster/photo and what it looks like, and mock up shirt designs.

And did you intentionally leave out the signed poster/picture above $75?

I'd consider the FALCHION & DISINTEGRATOR, except doing so you lose out on the autograph. Personally I have a t-shirt, and since there aren't any pictures/details, I'm not sure I want to jump up to that level, especially if I lose out on the autograph.

Maybe a $125 level where you add that back in? Or maybe it was an oversight?

message 80: by Dara (new)

Dara (cmdrdara) | 2702 comments I like the rewards. I do agree with Casey that the jump from $300 to $3,000 is a lot. Maybe a reward at $1,000?

So great to have the extra eyes. Making some final tweaks today. Y'all rock.

message 82: by Jeremie (new)

Jeremie | 25 comments Maybe a 25$ pledge without the paperback copy of the anthology for those who just want the ebook version.

There are no additional fees for international shipping of the sticker and bookmark ?

message 83: by Shaina (new)

Shaina (shainaeg) | 166 comments How about hard copies of the books autographed by you Tom and Veronica for one of the levels, maybe $100, or 150 and you get the T-Shirt too.

Yep! Have that in the works for later as well. We didn't want to have TOO many levels right at launch.

message 86: by Tom, Supreme Laser (new)

Tom Merritt (tommerritt) | 1195 comments Mod
Oh and btw I have triple-checked with David our Kickstarter guru and he says that since the bookmark and sticker fit in an envelope with an international stamp, we don't need to add shipping.

message 87: by Jonathan (new)

Jonathan | 185 comments I'd probably either switch the $75 (producer credit on one episode) and $100 (t-shirt and physic and e-copy of the anthology) tiers or have the major $75 benefit (producer credit) carry over into the $100 tier as well. Or a mix could be a $125 tier.

message 88: by Jason (new)

Jason Bergman (loonyboi) I know you don't have anyone lined up for this theoretical season yet, but could you maybe...HINT at someone? It feels very half-baked right now.

As someone who's very familiar with S&L, I'm ready to back the crap out of you guys. I trust you. But if I wasn't, I would never, ever put money in without some kind of concrete details.

If you could get some kind of commitment from someone (Neil Gaiman, perhaps? That guy likes to talk!) and even better, have them appear in the video, it would go a looooong way.

message 89: by Todd (new)

Todd Carrozzi | 61 comments Looks good to me...maybe add a $10000 level where you use your extensive influence to get Pat Rothfuss to complete Day 3 right away and personally read it to the donor...hmm maybe Wil Wheaton instead. I like it when he reads books to me. You guys can make that happen, right?

message 90: by Rob, Roberator (new)

Rob (robzak) | 7205 comments Mod
It looks like you added poster to all the other levels above 50, so I guess that was just an oversight.

Although $75 doesn't indicate it will be signed while all the rest do.

Additionally of the levels beyond $50 indicate the option of photo vs. poster. Is that intentional? Maybe it's just me, but that's a bit confusing. Maybe you could change the higher levels from Plus bookmarks, signed poster & sticker. to Plus bookmarks, sticker, and your choice of signed poster or photo.

I definitely think more info on the shirts/posters/photo is important as it seems like the main incentive to back at higher levels.

Looking good though. I can't wait to give you my money! ^_^

It gets too complicated to explain if we offer the photo above that level.

I'm working on making us decided on the options for t-shirts too.

Tom, for simplicity's sake, you could just write the entries up like this:

$100 - You get all the rewards listed above PLUS your choice of one of several forthcoming Sword and Laser t-shirts.

$175 - You get all the rewards listed above PLUS (EXCLUSIVE TO THIS LEVEL) Tom and Veronica will discuss one book of your choosing on the audio show!

That way you can keep the higher pledge listings from getting too long and looking like a sci-fi/fantasy version of the 12 Days of Christmas (though, I'd totally pledge at a "LEM IN A PEAR TREE" level). You just need to make sure you mark which rewards are exclusive to a single pledge level.

Thanks Erik, we tried that and it opened us up to other misinterpretations unfortunately. While this is a little Partirdgey it's at least accurate.
