Could this be the series that appeared in the Newark Star Ledger weekend mag sometime around 1949-1950? I read it was published in the Toronto Star and am hoping it was the series that started me in sci fi. Does anyone know?

Yes, it is that series. This is actually volume 7, originally titled "Conquest of the Amazon", but for some reason the current edition drops the first six books, which I am currently reading, and greatly enjoyingThe Toronto Star edition has some beautiful artwork.
