Smallo | 91 comments Watching documentaries about vanishing bees and factory farming. Any books that have future settings with at least references to above? Examples: a Monsanto-like company with sole control of food supply, all humans become vegan, GMOs spawn new mutations, etc

Jen (jenlb) | 174 comments You might like David Brin's Earth Earth by David Brin . Environmental/food production/conservation etc are huge themes in it. I don't remember specific mentions of honeybees, but it certainly goes into depth about how our lack of environmental consciousness now might play out in the near future.

Richard (thinkingbluecountingtwo) | 447 comments Try The Windup Girl by Paolo Bacigalupi. His setting is a fascinating post-scarcity Bangkok where calories are scarce and in the wider world all food production is tightly controlled by the calorie companies.
Very atmospheric and nicely written and imagined. Well worth a try.

Hillary Major | 127 comments Bacigalupi definitely comes to mind. I haven't read it, but the YA Under the Empyrean Sky by Chuck Wendig sure looks like an attack on Monsanto.

Julia | 957 comments Try World Made by Hand, it's on my mental TBR list and may be what you're looking for.

Empress (the_empress) | 32 comments The Death of Grass is one of my favorites. It is about a plague on the crops. It is a bit post-apocalyptical. As the plague depletes the food resources and the population (as in the case with Chernobil) was not warned and not given time and option to prepare for what is coming. The book is taking place in UK and is a short read. It's not as fictional as the win-up girl where you have GM foods and food used as a control of the population. In fact both books are quite different [and I think The Windup Girl is a bit overrated]

In the Wess'har wars, you have eco-friendly but war-capable aliens and this is coming into a clash with the human perspective of exploiting the resources. It's more sci-fi then enviormental book but it is part of the story. IF you ever decide to read the series, have in mind that book 2 is very difficult to find as a paperback.
EDIT: This series will also fit in what you are asking in this topic: Nonmoney economic settings

I haven't read this one, but it has been recommended in another similar topic: Nature's End

Hillary Major | 127 comments I haven't read The Windup Girl yet, but I was really impressed by Bacigalupi's short story collection Pump Six and Other Stories, which I believe included a few stories set in the Windup Girl world.
