I was creeped as well when she was describing herself in the pool. It took me back to a documentary they made us watch in school about the Jews in the concentration camps. That was the stuff of nightmares. :(

I'm always horrified when they get to the part (view spoiler)[where you see what happened to the 'graduates'. It is really the most horrible thing I've read in a YA book. Characters (view spoiler)[ Valek, Janco, Yelena, Ari and Comander Ambrose were all interesting. The relationship Yelena formed with the cook was believable till it was show he was an informer i had not expected that from him despite being told about his past. (hide spoiler)]

Relationship: (view spoiler)[ I had been enjoying the almost friendship between Valek and Yelena until they professed their love for each other, then they became a bit mushy and that did not fit with their characters at all for me. Early in the story Yelena was having visions of Valeks pants down around his ankles which i found so off as her last encounter with a male was being rapped and tortured. (hide spoiler)]

Over all an enjoyable story it could have been better but with luck will improve as the series goes :)
