Just curious, does anybody know how these books get on the shelves they are on? Some are obvious, in fact, I have run across a couple where only 1 person has listed them on a shelf that is one not on the list, and it is apparent the person is me. I was just wondering how they get on the top shelves that we use.

I'm not sure I completely understand your question, Lyn, but maybe this will answer it:

The list of shelves we are using is the top 350 shelves used by GR members - or the top 350 shelves with the most books, excluding "to-read" and "currently reading." GR has a pretty recent page with the top 150 shelves with the numbers of books listed here:
http://www.goodreads.com/shelf/top_sh...

And then we use the top 5 pages of shelves for each individual book - or the most popular shelves for that book based on the number of GR members who have shelved that book with those particular shelves. So the shelves with the highest number of users are listed first. But for shelves that have the same number of users - particularly those with only 1 person using that shelf - it seems like they have used different methods for listing them. It used to be strictly based on when the shelves were added, but lately I've been seeing some that are alphabetical based on the shelf names.

Did that answer your question?

I think it's a matter of the names you assign your shelves. A lot of people use the same name for a shelf and when you place your book on that shelf it's added to the list.

When I was naming my shelves, I went through the list to see what some of the more popular names where for shelves and used those.

Does that help?

Actually Mel, your answer is exactly what I was looking for. I noticed there were some books that only have 1 or so shelves, and I wondered why they weren't on more shelves. I was wondering if it was just that no one had put them on a shelf yet.

Thanks to both you for continually answering my inane questions.

Luann (azbookgal) | 1006 comments I'm glad your question got answered, Lyn! Where are these books that only have one shelf? They wouldn't work very well for the Shelf-a-Thon! The vast majority of books have at least have read, to-read, and currently-reading - although those don't help for the Shelf-a-Thon either. :)

I have two, one is After Etan The Missing Child Case that Held America Captive, which only has about 4 shelves, one of them true-crime, but that is because I put it there. Seems not quite kosher to count it.

The other is Kicked Out, which only has one shelf which is to-read. Both books were recommended by other GR folks, but I guess they just haven't put them on shelves yet.

Anyway - I agree, I don't think I will try to use them for the shelf-a-thon.

Anyway, at least not this early in the Shelf-a-Thon. It isn't until closer towards the end that you wind up reading books that will only count for one shelf.
