What are your top five "desert island books" -- books that you'd take with you if you were going to be stranded on a desert island?

List them all (you're welcome to list more than five), then tell us why you chose at least two of them. What makes them so great, and why would you not want to be without them?

Lastly, what's one more thing you wouldn't want to be without on the island (you can say anything except a boat!).

I could either be a smart@ss, or respond correctly. But the truth is that I don't have such a strong memory that I can remember authors names, or even the name of the books I read. So, to be fair, I would say I would want five new books, that I have never read before, to keep me company while I whither away on that forsaken island. That way, I would be sure to read a new adventure on each book, but it would be a shame, and downright boring if I only had five books to read, over and over. Their greatest use on a deserted island would probably be for making fire after I finished them. If anything, tho only way to enjoy reading books on an island was if you landed with a whole libraries worth, which actually sounds preferable to only five. For the last non-book thing, I'd want a way to be able to make pure water from rain or sea water. No one wants to die of dehydration, and on an island, fresh water isn't an abundant resource.

Basically saying, I don't have a favorite five books.

I choose goosebumps because i like the scary and horror in the books. And i choose the bible because i like to learn about my religion.And one thing i wouldn't want to be without on the island is my family and a girl.

I would not want to be without the alchemist by paulo coelho because it is a very good and interesting book it is about a boy who goes to Egypt and discovers alots of things and learns lots of lessons. the hunger games is a very interesting book about 12 kids trying to fight for their life. they have to fight each other. it is a very good book and it does not get boring no matter how many times you read it. water

The top five books I would bring on a desert island would have to be...

1."The Secret Life of Bees", by Sue Monk Kidd
2.Any encyclopedia on superheroes and villains, specifically Marvel
3.The Bible
4."Grimm's Fairy Tales", by the Grimm Brothers
5."Wrecked", by Carol Higgins Clark

I chose The Secret Life of Bees, because it's one of my favorite books and I would read it over and over again. It's about a young girl name Lily, when she was younger she accidentally shot her mother dead. She lives with her father,T-Ray who is somewhat abusive. At home there's also a African American maid who works for her father name Rosaleen and she plays a motherly/friendly role towards Lily. Hoping to find answers about her mother, Rosaleen (after an encounter with caucasian men she is sent to jail under wrong doing) and Lily escape from jail. They walk a while and Lily notices a jar of honey in a store window labeled Black Mary. That jar of honey leads them to the Boatwright sisters,Lily eventually learns more about herself.

I chose Grimm's Fairy Tales, because it was a childhood favorite. It's a book that brings me to a imaginative world and it makes me happy.

Oh and I would bring food. Very essential.

Books I would want on a desert island:

"God Created the Integers" by Stephan Hawking
"A Short History of Nearly Everything" by Bill Bryson
"Evolution: The First 4 Billion Years" by MIT Press
"The Diamond Age" by Neal Stephanson
"Wolf: The Journey Home" by Asta Bowen

I would bring God Created the Integers to be able to get a post-college level of math education, and be able to keep myself busy with math problems. I have always enjoyed the story of Wolf, and have already read it about 7 times. A Short History of Nearly Everything is a comprehensive guide to the creation of the universe and the physics that govern our lives.

If I could take one item to a desert island it would be duct tape, so I could make tools in order to survive.

I would bring 1000 reasons to smile because it would remind me that even though I'm stuck on an island by myself there are still so many reasons to smile. I would bring Fairy tales from the brother Grimm because every night I could read 1 fairy tale just like when I was younger.

If I was able to take one thing on the island I wouldn't be able to like with my Computer, or Starbucks or CHIPOLTLE!!!

Most of the books on my list are self explanatory but I wanted the book about building tools because I would need the tools to make the boat & I would need the book about edible plants because I would need something to eat on the island. Also I would want lots of drinkable water.

1) Gone Series #1 by Michael Grant
2) The Enemy by Charlie Higson
3) Zombie Island by Samantha Hoffman
4) Maximum Ride Series #1 by James Patterson

The reason I would bring Zombie Island is because it's a crazy book with a weird plot and I love zombie books. Plus Gone because its about teens surviving under a dome with supernatural powers i mean that's a good book to have if you were stranded.

And I would have an endless supply of chocolate pudding because...why not.

I chose 37 clues because it would be a good way to teach me thims so i wouldnt be stranded on the island and i would take the odyseey because its a fun interesting book to read.

3. One Flew Over The Cuckoos Nest, a great book I read this summer, I would bring it.
4. Of Mice and Men, a great book I read a few years ago.

I would bring the Harry Potter series and Percy Jackson series because those are two of my favorite book series.

If i had to take one thing on the island it would be another person because otherwise i'd go crazy all alone

I chose 2, and 4 because they are amazing works of literature and I could read them over and over.
I chose the Odyessy because I never got to read it with out the pressure of time, sounds perfect for a desert island.

If I could bring anything I would bring a plane or maybe a computer to play dwarf fortress on okay, okay, magnesium and steel kit.

Edit: Just thought you might not know what that it, think of a flint and steel just that the magnesium shavings take a flame and not the bar.
TL;DR you dont need tinder for a fire.

I picked battle royals and Carrie because the books have very interesting themes. They both can give you chills when you think about it and the characters are interesting. One item I would bring is a calculator. I'm sure I'm going to need math at some point. (Solar powered)

I would also like a helicopter so I can get off the island.

I would pick The Way of The Shadow and The Fire because these two books have very gripping story lines. They are the type of books that makes the reader want to keep on reading and not put the book down.

If I could bring anything with me it would be a lighter.

A Game of Thrones because it is interesting, fun and very long.

The Knife of Never Letting Go, because it is incredibly written with a riveting plot and unforgettable characters.

Wolf Brother: I have loved this book since I first read it at age 7 - it is hugely gripping, moving and informational about prehistoric european life.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows: I love Harry Potter, and this one is very long. Enough said.

Fahrenheit 451: We are only mid way through it but I already love this book. It is wonderfully written and really makes you think about the growing faults in our society.

Five desert island books:

1. Percy Jackson series by Rick Riordan
2. Harry Potter series by J.K Rowling
3. Green eggs and ham by Dr. Suess
4. The Life of pi by Yann Martel
5. The Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini

All of the books are great, but my favorite are The Life of Pi and green eggs and ham. The Life of pi is so great because it shows such a great story and the details make you feel like your actually there, and it's similar to the situation of being on a deserted island. Green eggs and ham has been a favorite book of mine since I was younger. The rhythm used in the book is extraordinary and it always a good read.

I would like the prescence of another human being.

I would love to bring any play by shakespeare because all of them just keep my attention with the style of writing. I would choose to kill a mockingbird because I love classic books.

I'd bring all of these books because they tell an important message. MOst importantly The Other Wes Moore because it shows how different people from the same environment can be and how not to be a product of your environment.

I don't have 5 books but I would probably bring the twilight saga, it's easier that way because they are all of the same series. They are fantasy fiction and it has romance. I would bring a helicopter so I could fly back home haha.
