J Sam not a JKR fan...at all. haven't read a sentence of Potter but i LOVED this book! such great characters and a plot that's simple yet deep. can't wait for the sequel

Ruth Belano-Ingkal I actually agree with you. I thought the ending makes up for it, though. Not as engaging as other novels, I give you that. I don't hate it. I don't particularly like it either.

Cats Read Manga, Too Alexandra wrote: "Malcolm wrote: "I liked this book a lot because it was a superbly written old style whodunit, that is, like the Poirot books, we are looking at a crime through the eyes of a private detective after..."

Basically, this is how mystery is supposed to be done well. Although, I will admit I skimmed through a lot of her descriptions about their clothes (who cares!).

Nora Liked it, but would not rush to recommend it to friends. Read to see how JKR could do. I really liked the detective, who surprisingly is a war vet with a prosthesis. I liked the girl, newly engaged, who becomes the assistant. The fabulous, wonderful model did not seem so to me, but other things made up for it. I would read another book with these same sleuths. Major disappointment: She felt she had to use crude language, perhaps because it is for adult audience. Not so. By 3/4 way thru I knew the one guy was a total jerk and he did not have to spew the F word constantly. It has been a few months since I read it, so I can't recall names. sorry.

Kwnstantina Anestou I totally agree with FriscoKid's comment. For 3/4 of the book not a single clue has been released. The fact that THE WHOLE unrolling of the mystery happens in the last -how many where they?- 15 pages and so little have been implied before in the plot, is the first flaw of the book. The second one, which still remains unanswered to me is "Why the hell did John hire Strike? For Christ sake... why did the murderer hire a detective to sneak into his shit? WHY??". Can anyone please give me a hint?
