Some people have asked me if the references are real. It would be kind of interesting to think that they were! In an earlier copy there was advice not to go to the Harvard Library and try to look up the references.

(I would be curious to know if anyone immediately flips to the back cover as soon as they see the references proving cartoon elephants exist.)

One of the references that someone may not get is the reference about the Inventory of Existing Cartoon Elephants (IECE). It is about "face validity." Face validity is this idea that a measure actually "looks" like (at face value) what it is supposed to measure. For instance, a measure of depression "looks like" a measure of depression if it measures things like low energy, feelings of guilt, or inability to get out of bed. If it measured things like your likelihood to buy a certain car or cereal it would't "look like" (at face value) a measure of depression.

The reference is about the face validity of a measure identifying the existence of cartoon elephants.
